Dieci anni di Club To Club!

Il decennale di Club To Club, festival internazionale di musiche e arti elettroniche, si svolgerà dal 4 al 7 novembre 2010 a Torino e in contemporanea dal 3 al 5 novembre a Istanbul, con un’anticipazione a Milano, il 21 e 23 ottobre.Torino, Istanbul e Milano, con numerose e prestigiose location, saranno unite dalle sonorità e dalle performance di Club To Club, appuntamento internazionale tra i più importanti e attesi per gli appassionati di musica e cultura elettronica. Molti gli showcase e le esibizioni di artisti che verranno presentate in anteprima ed esclusiva europea e italiana, oppure realizzate appositamente per il festival come l’opera prima Zeitgeist, a completare una line up che vuole rappresentare le avanguardie sonore e visive del nuovo decennio.Mai come quest’anno l’obiettivo di Club To Club è rivolto a 360 gradi verso

i suoni più avveniristici del panorama musicale contemporaneo.Torino e il Piemonte per noi sono sempre stati laboratorio, fucina di idee. Da qui siamo partiti dieci anni fa in un viaggio che ci porta fino a Istanbul. Non potevamo immaginarlo ma succederà. Che puzzle. Eppure questo puzzle ci piace. Ci piace immaginare città e musiche diverse tra loro che si influenzano concretamente. Uno scambio ininterrotto di input per superare la logica dell'evento per costruire una relazione forte tra città, arti e persone che hanno bisogno di dialogare sempre di più. Questo è il nostro contributo, e si chiama Club To Club.

Club To Club presenta quest’anno il nuovo tema “The X Superstition”: magia e superstizione saranno le parole chiave della celebrazione del decennale del festival, all'inizio degli anni dieci. Aspettatevi molte sorprese.

Ten years of Club To Club!

The 10th edition of Club To Club, Torino International Festival of Electronic Music and Arts, will take place from 4th to 7th November 2010 in Torino and from 3rd to 5th November in Istanbul, with a preview in Milan on 21th and 23nd October. Torino, Istanbul and Milan will be united, in their many extraordinary locations, by Club To Club sounds and performances, in one of the year's most eagerly awaited international electronic music and culture events. Many showcases and performances featured will be exclusive European or Italian previews, or conceived on purpose for the festival itself, like the Zeitgeist, completing a line-up aiming to represent the new decade's cutting edge. Never in such a way Club To Club has aimed, with a well-rounded vision, to the more futuristic sounds in the contemporary music scene.To us, Torino and the Piedmont region have always been the

avantgarde, a testing ground, a breeding ground of ideas. We started from here ten years ago in a trip that's now taking us for edition number ten to Istanbul. We couldn't guess it then but it will happen.What a puzzle. But we like this puzzle. We like to imagine different cities and music which influence each other concretely. A continuous input exchange trying to overtake the logic of "the event" and to build a relationship between cities and arts in need to dialogue more and more. This is our contribution, and it's called Club To Club. After establishing an imaginary "State of Indepen/Dance" in 2009, Club To Club introduces a new theme for this year's edition, "The X Superstition": the choice between magic, superstition and rationality will be the leitmotif of the Festival's 10th anniversary, at the start of the 2010s. Get ready for many surprises.

Dal 2008 ho lavorato fianco a fianco con Carlos Casas per almeno cinque progetti: la produzione di Montjuich - un’installazione video per la mostra Check-in Architecture - la prima di un live con Phill Niblock, per il FilmForum dell’Università di Udine a Gorizia, le ricerche che hanno accompagnato Multinatural (Blackout) - la parata di Arto Lindsay alla Biennale Arte di Venezia 2009 poi sfociate in vari video, live e nel libro Parade/Parades - l’identità visiva di Netmage 2010 - il festival che co-dirigo a Bologna - ed End, l’installazione a tre schermi presentata nell’estate 2010 all’Hangar Bicocca a Milano e che rappresenta un tentativo di far incontrare i video monocanale che lui stesso definisce Fieldworks, con una reinterpretazione espansa dei tre pluripremiati film (Aral, Fishing in an invisible sea, Solitude at the end of the world e Hunters since the beginning of time) che lo hanno impegnato lungo dieci anni. Abbiamo viaggiato insieme da Barcellona a Parigi, da Knokke-Le Zoute a Vittorio Veneto, da Tashkent a Salvador de Bahia, da Samarcanda a Bruxelles, da Stoccolma a Topolò, da Londra a Cagliari, fra parate, mostre, concerti noise, dj set di cumbia e proiezioni di cinema

sperimentale, condividendo abitazioni, camere d’albergo e studi. Nonostante tutto, non sono mai riuscito a capire bene come riesca a realizzare ritratti di luoghi e di persone così intensi e sprofondati in un’atmosfera tanto densa ed evocativa, riprendendo gli elementi più semplici della quotidianità. Ritornando più e più volte nel buio squarciato dai crepitii del fuoco, dalle folate del vento o illuminato dalle sferzate di luce polare o desertica dei tre grandi schermi di End, mi è stata chiara almeno una questione essenziale: Carlos Casas esplora le condizioni che regolano l’equilibrio fra la vita e la morte. Insegue la presenza silenziosa della morte al lavoro, e lo fa paradossalmente negli spazi più stratificati di città molto connotate nell’immaginario cultural-generazionale, come Barcellona, Istanbul, Torino. E pedìna le ragioni della sopravvivenza nelle terre estreme (come la Siberia, la Terra del Fuoco, il centro Asia), laddove l’immaginario non riesce ancora ad essere nient’altro più che quello del turismo d’avventura. Nel processo di ripresa, usa sempre come guida e riferimento il suono e mai l’immagine. Si sintonizza sul paesaggio e sugli interni come un

rabdomante, braccando suoni inascoltabili (soprattutto radiofrequenze) o perdendosi in ritmi segreti e frastuoni devastanti.Alla fine della mostra, ho capito che - al di là del background e dei molti riferimenti colti, sia musicali sia cinematografici - molto semplicemente il segreto di Carlos Casas stava proprio in ciò che avevo avuto la fortuna di condividere negli ultimi due anni: il piacere puro di una persona splendidamente in grado di ascoltare le suggestioni più disparate e poi di raccontarle, scivolando nella zona d’ombra silenziosa che sempre contraddistingue gli autori.

I have worked closely with Carlos Casas Since 2008 on at least five projects: the Montjuich production of - a video installation for the Check-in Architecture exhibition - the premiere of a live show with Phill Niblock, for the FilmForum of Università di Udine, in Gorizia, the research that accompanied Multinatural (Blackout) - the parade by Arto Lindsay at the Biennale d’Arte di Venezia 2009 then resulting in a number of videos, a live show and in the Book Parade / Parades - the visual identity of Netmage 2010 - the festival I co-organise in Bologna - and End, the installation projected on three screens

in Summer 2010 at the Bicocca Hangar in Milan and is an attempt to bring together the single-channel video, which he defines Fieldworks, with an expanded interpretation of the three multi-award-winning films (Aral. Fishing in an invisible sea, Solitude at the end of the world and Hunters since the beginning of time) on which he worked for ten years. We traveled together from Barcelona to Paris, Knokke-Le Zoute to Vittorio Veneto, from Tashkent to Salvador de Bahia, from Samarkand to Brussels, Stockholm to Topolò, from London to Cagliari, amongst parades, exhibitions, noise concerts, cumbia dj sets and experimental films screenings, sharing homes, hotel rooms and studios.Despite everything, I never managed to understand how he could create portraits of places and people of such intensity and so deeply immersed in a dense and evocative atmosphere, taking the simplest elements of everyday life. Returning again and again into the darkness ripped open by the crackling fire, by the gusts of wind or illuminated by flashes of polar o desert light of the three large screens used for End, one basic thing has always been very clear to me: Carlos Casas explores the conditions that regulate balance between life and death.

He goes after the silent presence of death at work, and he does paradoxically in more stratified spaces of cities which have many connotations in the cultural-generational imagination such as, Barcelona, Istanbul, Turin. And shadows the reasons of survival in extreme lands (such as Siberia and Tierra del Fuego, the center of Asia), where the imagery still can’t be else more than the one linked to adventure and tourism. In the process of shooting, always uses the sound as a reference and guide and never the image. He tunes into both the landscape and the interiors like a water diviner, hunting down unheard sounds (especially radio ones) or losing himself in secret rhythms and devastating noises.At the end of the show, I realized that - beyond the background and the many educated cultural references, both musical and cinematic - Carlos Casas’s secret is quite simply and precisely what I had been lucky enough to share in the last two years: the pure pleasure of a person who can wonderfully listen to the many different suggestions and then tell them, slipping into the silent grey area which has always characterized the authors.

Istanbul, finalmente!Istanbul, at last!

Quest’anno è finalmente Istanbul. Dopo Berlino, Barcellona, Rotterdam e Bruxelles... Istanbul! Una città crocevia di stimoli, mondi che sembra ricalcare perfettamente l’intento delle ultime edizioni di Club To Club: quella di essere un happening dove si fa il punto - partecipando, ballando, parlando - sulla cultura contemporanea di cui la musica elettronica e la cultura elettronica sono una delle porte d’accesso privilegiate. Privilegiate ma non elitarie: mai come oggi la cultura elettronica unisce il mondo e i mondi ed esprime un sentire immediato e facilmente condivisibile. Una liaison internazionale, quella con la città sul Bosforo, che ha dato vita anche a Zeitgeist, un nuovo progetto live media fra Torino e Istanbul appositamente realizzato per il Festival dallo straordinario, pluripremiato artista Carlos Casas, insieme ai due giovanissimi musicisti Utku Tavil e Francesco Fantini, e dalla mediapartnership con Edizioni Zero, che ha lanciato a Istanbul la prima edizione internazionale del magazine - ZeroIstanbul - con l’intento di una continua mappatura dell’entusiasmante fermento della

capitale turca. Come dice Baris Bilensen, direttore responsabile di ZeroIstanbul, “Non ci saremmo aspettati che Istanbul potesse crescere così velocemente, ma quel che è certo è che l’energia che la attraversa è in grado di assimilare culture diverse. Dovreste venire a farci un salto, cogliere quest’energia, questo fermento. Magari proprio in occasione di Club To Club!”

This year it’s Istanbul, at last. After Berlin, Barcelona, Rotterdam and Brussels... Istanbul! An intersection of stimuli, worlds which seem to perfectly reflect the intentions of Club To Club past editions: it is a happening where by taking part in the event, dancing, talking one can take stock of the contemporary cultural situation of which electronic music and culture is one of the privileged gates. Privileged yet not elitist: never like today electronic culture has linked the world and the worlds and can express an immediacy of easily shared feelings. We share an international liaison with the city on the Bosphorus, which has also generated a Zeitgeist, a new live media project between Torino

and Istanbul expressly created for the Festival by the extraordinary, multi-award winning artist Carlos Casas, together with the two very young musicians, Utku Tavil and Francesco Fantini, and from the media partnership with Edizioni Zero, which launched in Istanbul the first international edition of magazine, ZeroIstanbul, with the intention of carrying out a constant mapping of the exciting turmoil of the Turkish capital. To say it in the words of ZeroIstanbul’s director, Baris Bilensen, “We would never have imagined that Istanbul could rise so rapidly, yet what is certain is that the energy which goes through it can assimilate different cultures. You should hop over and seize this energy, this excitement, and why not on the occasion of Club To Club!”

Torino ve -Boğaz’daki şehir- İstanbul’u enternasyonel bir bağ kurarak bir araya getirecek olan, yeni ve canlı medya projesi Zeitgeist(Zamanın Ruhu); sıradışı ve birden fazla kez ödül sahibi olmuş ünlü sanatçı Carlos Casas tarafından, iki genç müzisyen (Utku Takil ve Francesco Fantini) ile beraber, festival için özel olarak yapılmıştır. number of tracks received confirms the vitality of Italy’s electronic music scene. Anno 2010, il mondo nella sua complessità, e non solo quello culturale, è cambiato ed è in perenne e costante evoluzione: sono mutati il significato e la funzione delle pratiche artistiche e culturali, il ruolo delle istituzioni, il rapporto tra iniziativa pubblica e privata, i soggetti che operano nel mondo artistico e performativo, il modo e il concetto stesso di cultura.Il rischio che si corre è di affrontare queste tematiche con strumenti che portano con sé un ritardo di anni, utilizzando indicatori, criteri, strumenti euristici, gabbie interpretative poco flessibili. A fronte di una parte dell’organizzazione della cultura e dello spettacolo obsoleta e autoreferenziale, vi sono numerosi soggetti che hanno avuto

il coraggio di guardare al presente, aprendosi a nuovi linguaggi e modalità interpretative del reale inusuali, muovendosi sempre più verso la sinergia e l’ibridazione dei linguaggi artistici. Di qui l’esigenza di richiamare l’attenzione sulle politiche culturali attuate da alcuni enti che operano a livello territoriale nell’ambito della scena musicale di diverse regioni europee, con particolare riferimento al suono elettronico, per cercare di tracciare un percorso di confronto tra diverse realtà e reti europee impegnate nella valorizzazione di territori, artisti, sviluppo culturale e turistico attraverso la matrice della musica elettronica e del suo dialogo con altre arti.

Year 2010. The world in its complexity, and not just the cultural one, has changed and is in a perpetual evolution: the meaning and the function of art and cultural practices have changed, together with the role of institutions, the relationship between the public and private initiative, the subjects working in the artistic and performing arts world, the modalities and the concept of culture itself.We are running the risk of broaching these topics with tools bearing within the delay built up in years and of using less than flexible pointers, criteria, heuristic tools, interpretation cages.Against a part of obsolete and self-referential culture and showbiz organisations, stand

numerous subjects who have been brave enough to look at the present, opening up to the new and unusual languages and modalities of reality interpretation, progressively moving towards the synergy and hybridation of artistic languages. Hence the need to draw the attention on cultural policies undertaken by some bodies working on the territory within the music scene of different European regions, with special reference to the electronic sound, to try to trace a confrontation path among the different situations and networks across Europe, which are involved in creating more value for their territories, artists, cultural and tourist development through the matrix of electronic music and its dialogue with other arts.

Ciliegina sulla torta della decima edizione di Club To Club sarà il nuovo “progetto speciale” dell’immenso Jeff Mills. Non mi sento di dover-vi presentare il “mostro” della techno, chi non lo conosce, ha sbagliato Paper, ma credo sia giusto spendere qualche riga per la sua nuova esibizione dedicata al cielo e agli UFO. 240 mi-nuti in cui il dj di Detroit con una performance di suoni e visioni da dancefloor, compone e miscela una colonna sonora elettronica che fa da sfondo per le varie prove video e fotografi-che di avvistamenti di oggetti non identificati nell’area di Detroit, degli Stati Uniti e del resto del mondo. 4 ore di viaggio nel cercare “qualcosa nel cie-lo”, perché lo show se non l’avete ancora ca-pito, è l’occhio dell’osservatore, di chi si trova a guardare il cielo e scoprire qualcosa di mai visto prima, parla dunque di noi e delle nostre reazioni in queste misteriose circostanze.Seguite con attenzione il live di Jeff Mills non si sa mai fosse proprio lui l’alieno sceso in terra.

The icing on the cake of Club To Club’s tenth edition will be the new “special project” of the immense Jeff Mills. I don’t feel like having to introduce the “monster” of techno, but who-ever is not aware of who he is, is reading the wrong paper. Still, I think it is right to spend a few words for his new performance dedicated to the sky and UFOs. 240 minutes during which the Detroit DJ, together with sounds and visions, composes and mixes an electronic soundtrack as a backdrop for various video and photo-graphic evidences of unidentified object sight-ings in the Detroit area, the United States and the rest of the world. A 4-hour journey in search for “something in the sky” because the show, should you not have yet understood, is the eye of the observer, the one who is looking at the sky and finds something never seen before. Thus he talks about us and our reactions to these myste-rious circumstances. So you might want to follow Jeff Mills’s show closely, because you never know: he might be the alien landed on planet Earth.

Inventiamoci una nuova categoria e facciamo finta che sia subito vera: postpunkabbestia. I Modeselektor sono quelli che si incontrano a dei party illegali a Berlino, gli stessi che con gli anni sono finiti ad essere il gruppo preferito di Thom Yorke. L’intellighenzia e lo sfascio tutto nella stessa centrifuga, che a pensarci bene è esattamente quello che succede in uno qual-siasi dei loro dischi dove ritmi “contro” come techno e reggae finiscono nello stesso catino dell’elettronica cervellotica talmente buia da confondere la prospettiva di chi ascolta. Mia cugina a Berlino ci ha vissuto per un po’: droghe e avventure nel sottosuolo comprese, una volta mi ha detto di aver visto dei tipi in uno squat nella città est mangiare da delle sca-tolette, quando si è avvicinata ha capito che si trattava di cibo per cani. I Modeselektor sono così: una poltiglia poco definibile, dall’aspetto equivoco ma dal sapore irresistibile.

Let’s invent a new category and pretend that it is becoming true now: post gutter punk. Modeselektor are those you would meet at ille-gal parties in Berlin, the same people who over the years have become Thom Yorke’s favour-ite band. The intelligentsia and the shambles tossed into the same spin, which if you come to think of it, that is exactly what happens in any of their records where “against” rhythms as techno and reggae end up into the basin of the brainy electronic music, so dark to confuse the listener’s perspective.My cousin lived in Berlin for a while: under-ground drugs and adventures included, she once told me that she saw some blokes in a squat in the eastern side of the city eating from cans, when she approached them, she realized they were eating dog food. Modeselektor are like that: an undefined mix mash, with a shady look yet with an irresistible flavour.

All’alba degli anni Dieci il Berghain/Panoramabar di Berlino si erge a tempio della techno nel mondo e Marcel Dett-mann ne è il sommo sacerdote. Le leggendarie maratone elettroniche tra le mura infernali del club berlinese lo hanno consacrato emblema vivente della figura del dj e massima espressio-ne della techno contemporanea. Dalla stessa fucina di talenti (la triade Hard Wax – Ostgut Ton – Berghain) proviene Shed, personaggio imperscrutabile le cui traiettorie sonore stan-no contribuendo a ridefinire le coordinate di riferimento della scena underground europea. Il suo potente live rispecchia le produzioni in studio: creatività, contaminazione e una spic-cata attitudine old school.

In twenty-five years of history, techno music has seen a succession of places, symbols, and a whole generations of artists. At the dawn of the first decade of the new milennium Berlin’s Berghain / Panoramabar stands as a temple in the world of techno and Marcel Dettmann is its high priest. The legendary electronic marathons between the hellish walls of the Berlin club have consecrated him the living emblem of the DJ fig-ure and ultimate expression of contemporary techno. From the same breeding ground of tal-ents (Hard Wax - Ostgut Ton – Berghain triad) comes Shed, inscrutable figure whose sound trajectories are helping to redefine the bench-marks of the European underground scene. His powerful live show reflects his studio recorded productions based on creativity, fusions and an old school attitude.

E se la rivoluzione la facessimo con un subwo-ofer? Steve Goodman aka Kode 9 sembra avere imbracciato la causa e lo ha fatto scrivendo una storia fatta di scimmie spaziali, guerriglie soni-che, frequenze aliene, schizofonia capitalista, cover di Prince, flussi di coscienza hardcore, lezioni universitarie e una casa discografica (la Hyperdub) capace di lanciare una vera e propria superstar sotterranea come Burial. Nel caso in cui tutto questo non vi sembrasse anco-ra abbastanza fantascientifico, provate a pren-dere tutto e a collocarlo in un teatro seicente-sco, dal momento che Kode 9 ci farà l’onore di esibire le sue memorie sonore futuristiche proprio nel cuore della Torino risorgimentale, sul palco di quel teatro Carignano che sarà una location talmente surreale da rivelarsi perfetta per ospitare l’iniziatore di quella che forse è stata l’unica vera rivoluzione sonora degli ul-timi dieci anni (la dubstep e relative mutazioni del dub). Accompagnato da un’altra punta di diamante della sua label (quel Darkstar che da un anno circa sta facendo ruotare pesante-mente nelle playlist di chiunque la sua hit Ai-dys Girl’s a Computer), Kode 9 non si limite-rà a un live set ma farà ascoltare al pubblico del Carignano alcuni pezzi inediti di Burial in anteprima assoluta. Un evento che si impone all’attenzione dei nostri calendari come l’av-vento di un’antica profezia Maya.

What if we started a revolution with a subwoof-er? Steve Goodman, aka Kode 9, seems to have embraced the cause and did it by writing a story made of space monkeys, sonic guerrilla war-fare, alien frequencies, capitalist schizophonia, a Prince cover, hardcore streams of conscious-ness, university lessons and a record label (Hy-perdub) capable of launching a true and proper underground superstar as Burial. If this is not enough sci-fi for you, take all of it and locate it in a 17th century theatre, since Kode 9 will hon-our us with a performance of his futuristic sound memoirs right in the heart of Risorgimento Tori-no, on the stage of the Carignano theatre, which on the occasion will be a totally surreal location yet perfect to host the initiator of what is likely to be the only true sound revolution of the past ten years (dubstep and dub’s relevant mutations). Accompanied by yet another linchpin of his la-bel (the same Darkstar who have been on heavy rotation in play-lists everywhere with their hit Aidys Girl’s a Computer), Kode 9 will not limit himself to performing his live set, but he will also offer the audience at Carignano some un-released music by Burial in a first-ever preview. An event which imposes itself to the attention of our calendar like the event of an ancient Maya prophecy.

La musica è flusso, esplorazione, scoperta. Mentre Oltremanica imperversa il dibattito sull’hardcore continuum, c’è chi si disinteressa delle categorie concettuali, dedicandosi con spontaneità a ritmi e melodie. Sam Shackle-ton è uno di questi, un raffinato artigiano del suono, votato alla propria arte e con la men-te sgombra da recinti e confini. Co-fondatore della Skull Disco, gemma rivoluzionaria nel panorama dubstep inglese, ha saputo gettare un ponte tra la scena UK bass e il minimalismo elettronico di matrice berlinese. Le ritmiche d’ispirazione africana si fondono ipnoticamen-te al riverbero delle frequenze basse, celebran-do l’estasi dei sensi come in un rito tribale. Il suono di Shackleton è prospettico, raffinato ed elegante: il futuribile tracciato acustico di un presente in perpetua evoluzione.

Music is a flux, exploration, discovery. Whilst in the UK the debate on continuum hardcore is raging, there are those who have an interest in conceptual categories, dedicating with sponta-neity to rhythms and melodies. Sam Shackleton is one of these people, a refined craftsman of sound, devoted to his art with a clear mind with-out barriers or boundaries. Co-founders of Skull Disco, an utter revolutionary gem on the British dubstep scene, which built a bridge across UK’s bass scene and electronic minimalism with a Berlin matrix. The Afro-inspired rhythmic fuses hypnotically with the reverberations of low fre-quencies, celebrating the ecstasy of senses as in a tribal ritual. Shackleton’s sound has a perspective and is refined and elegant: the fu-ture acoustic tracing of a present in perpetual evolution.

Per chi si stesse chiedendo cosa faccia un uomo da tormentone – I Was Drunk, bomba house dal gusto balcanico, è finita nelle classi-fiche e nelle compilation meno nobili, lo scor-so anno – in un festival attento al suo profilo culturale come Club To Club, ecco un riassunto delle puntate precedenti. Riva Starr ha una sto-ria, innanzitutto: come Madox e Stefano Miele (suo vero nome) è stato uno dei maggiori espo-nenti della scena breakbeat non solo italiana, e ha anticipato di anni l’attitudine globalista attuale. Riva Starr è bravo, soprattutto: If Life Gives You Lemons, Make Lemonade è un al-bum vario e convincente di dance dalle molte influenze, assemblato con gusto come la com-pilation della Winter Music Conference di Mia-mi che il colosso Defected gli ha chiesto di mi-xare all’inizio del 2010. Perchè in fondo quello conta, la festa, e con Stefano – lo sanno bene i club di tutto il mondo in cui è richiestissimo – è garantita. E i pezzi che vanno in classifica bisogna saperli fare, tra l’altro.

Riva Starr is clever, and especially If Life Gives You Lemons, Make Lemonade is a wide-ranging and convincing dance album with many influences, assembled with taste like Miami’s Winter Music Conference compilation which the giant Defected asked him to mix at the beginning of 2010. Because at the end what counts is the party and with Stefano – as clubs across the world which want him badly are well aware of – the party is guaranteed. And anyway one has got to be good at making the catchy tunes in the charts.

Philippe Zdar e BoomBass sono tra i nomi più importanti nella scena dance francese. Nel ‘96 pubblicano “Foxxy”, la loro prima traccia house con il nome Cassius, prima di realizzare remix per gente come Air e Daft Punk. Now, after three acclaimed albums (“1999”, “Au Rêve” and “15 Again”) and many more hits (“Feeling For You”, “La Mouche”, “The Sound of Violence”, and “Toop Toop”), their career is entering a new phase, with the recent launch of their own label (Cas-sius Records), a new Ibiza residency -Club 75, together with Xavier of Justice, DJ Mehdi, and Busy P, which shook the Pacha dancefloors through all the summer- and an EP out now on Ed Banger, named “The Rawkers”.

Dietro quella serafica e setosa XX che è la fir-ma 2010 sullo storico albo dei vincitori del Mercury Prize, il premio per il miglior disco britannico dell’anno, c’è anche un ragazzotto inglese pacioso e riccioluto. Jamie Smith. Ov-vero il beatmaker, il cuore pulsante, il ciondo-lo che oscillando fra la dubstep e i territori più profondi dell’elettronica potrebbe ipnotizzare chiunque. In un presente che è passato di se stesso, l’opera di gente come Jamie XX è eser-cizio di distanza, di futuro. E’ il modo di difen-dere il meraviglioso dal bruttissimo, ora che è tutto appiattito. Senza uscirsene dal gruppo, Jamie ha pronto il suo esordio solista, antici-pato dalla traccia “Far Nearer”. Un titolo che come le due XX accenna soltanto, gioca sugli spazi, lascia tutto al sogno. E ricorda che bal-lare in silenzio è una delle cose più belle del mondo.

Behind the seraphic and silky XX which is the 2010 signature on the historic list of the acts awarded with the Mercury Prize -the award for best British album of the year- there’s also a placid curly-haired British boy whose name is Jamie Smith, i.e. the beatmaker, the beating heart, the pendant swinging between dubstep and deeper territories of electronic music which could hypnotize just about anyone. In a present which is a past of itself, the work of people like Jamie XX is a practice of distance, of future. It’s the way to defend the beautiful from the ugly, now that everything is dull. Without walking away from the group, Jamie has his solo debut ready to go, previewed by a track called “Far Nearer.” A title which just like the double X only hints at something, plays on spaces, leaves all to the dream. And reminds us that dancing in silence is one of the most beautiful things in the world.

Sulla pista Caribou e Four Tet avevano già fatto l’amore nel remix che Snaith aveva realizzato su “Angel Echoes” di Hebden, pestando beats arrabbiati canadesi sui coretti celestiali del londinese. ‘Sti due si piacciono.Ci prendiamo tutto lo psichedelico tempo ne-cessario per ascoltarli da capo a fondo senza capo né coda, estaticamente.

I King Midas Sound sono nati sotto le ali scure e protettive di Kode 9, il loro album di debutto Waiting For You uscito nel 2009 è un meraviglioso poema distopico nar-rato seguendo fedelmente la venerazione per i timbri bassi. Un culto che nacque dalla Jamai-ca e che ha attraversato i mari per insinuarsi nei ghetti metropolitani dell’Inghilterra più meticcia. Fatevi toccare anche voi dal tocco di Mida, questa notte a Torino.

A skeletal grace mixed with an eccentric metro-politan nocturnal elegance – which only those who crowd London night buses are gifted with – is perceived listening to the notes produced by the “touch of King Midas.” We are talking about long-time producer Kevin Martin, together with elderly MC Roger Robinson and chic illustrator Kiki Hitomi. King Midas Sound were born under Kode 9’s dark and protective wings. Their debut album “Waiting For You”, released in 2009, is a wonderful dystopian poem narrated by faith-fully worshipping the low tones. Drappi, oro, e velluti rossi, inondano di luce e si riflettono nei gong dei suonatori di Gamelan, un ensemble che esegue musiche millenarie dell’area centrale dell’isola di Giava, sull’Oce-ano Indiano, e della magnifica Bali, dove la musica giavanese si è sempre basata su un’ar-ticolazione ritmica a cerchi concentrici, un ciclo di ampie dimensioni che si suddivide al suo interno in unità più brevi. Questo vorti-coso incastro di melodie percussive, definito tecnicamente come una stratificazione polifo-nica, e che già sedusse alla fine dell’Ottocento un genio assoluto della musica come Claude Debussy, entrerà in relazione con le algide sonorità elettroniche dei Plaid (Warp), duo in-glese che è oggi considerato come uno fra i più influenti e innovativi progetti nel panorama internazionale della musica elettronica, nella serata di apertura del festival al Teatro Cari-gnano, elegante cornice dell’incontro tra i due musicisti londinesi Andy Turner e Ed Handley, e l’orchestra di dodici percussionisti giavanesi Southbank Gamelan Players. Le esperienze di Gamelan, d’altra parte, hanno imposto proces-si derivativi nel suono occidentale, elettronico e non, e sono in molti fra i musicisti anche con-temporanei, da Cage a Kode9 fino ad Aphex Twin, ad avere trovato ispirazione in un ge-nere che affonda le sue radici nell’Indonensia più autentica e incontaminata. Il debutto na-zionale del live di Plaid & Southbank Gamelan Players è un’iniziativa di Club To Club in col-laborazione con Prospettiva 2, British Council e DNA Concerti.

Drapes, gold, and red velvet flood with light and reflect themselves in the gongs of Gamelan players, an ensemble performing ancient music from the center of Java, in the Indian Ocean and the magnificent Bali, where Javanese music has always been based on a rhythmic articulation of concentric circles, a cycle of wide dimensions which subdivides inside into shorter units. This swirling interlock of percussive melodies, tech-nically defined as a polyphonic stratification, which already seduced the in late 19th century an absolute genius of music such as Claude Debussy, will enter into relationship with the icy electronic sounds of Plaid (Warp), an Eng-lish duo which in our day is considered one of the most influential and innovative projects on the international electronic music scene, on the festival’s opening night at the Teatro Carignano, an elegant setting for the encounter of the two London musicians, Andy Turner and Ed Hand-ley, and the orchestra of the twelve percussion-ists, the Javanese Southbank Gamelan Players. Gamelan’s experiences, on the other hand, have imposed derivative sounds in the western mu-sic, electronic or otherwise, and many are the musicians, even contemporary, from Kode9 up to Cage to Aphex Twin, who have found inspi-ration in a genre with roots sinking deep in the most authentic and unspoiled Indonesia. The national debut of Plaid & Southbank Gamelan Players live show is a Club To Club initiative in collaboration with Outlook 2, the British Council and DNA Concerti.

Rob Hall: al pari di Steve Beckett (Warp), Rob ha un ruolo primario nell’avvento della musi-ca elettronica nel Mondo, il progetto Gescom vede la sua firma, così come la Skam records e non è un caso che negli ultimi tour degli Au-techre lui sia stato il dj ufficiale ed in questa veste sbarca al Museo Regionale di Scienze Na-turali, con un bagaglio di dischi difficilmente riconducibili ad un unico genere, ma che di sicuro vi farà ballare come dei forsennati.Oneohtrix Point Never in mezzo agli animali imbalsamati del Museo, crederai di non esserti ancora svegliato oggi, nelle orecchie sentirai gli echi della notte appena passata e vivrai corporalmente il sogno orchestrato dai sinte-tizzatori di Oneohtrix Point Never. Lui è uno che crea stati di allucinazione temporanea, attraverso rarefatti drone riverberati che rac-chiudono il minimalismo quanto surrogati di tribalismo metropolitano.

Amongst the stuffed animals of the museum, you may think you have not woken up yet today, your ears will be buzzing with the echoes of the elapsed night and your body will be experiencing the dream orchestrated by Oneohtrix Point Never’s synthe-sisers. He is the kind who creates temporary hal-lucinatory states, through rarefied reverberant drones which enclose the minimalism as much as the surrogates of metropolitan tribalism.

In poco più di un lustro di attività e con alle spalle soltanto un Ep, un mini-album ed una manciata di remix ben assestati, l’inglese James Holden è già riuscito a ritagliarsi un ruolo di primo piano nell’Olimpo dei dj più richiesti al mondo.In parallelo alla sua carriera di producer, il giovane Holden (classe 1980), guida anche la Border Community, label tra le più innovative ed eclettiche del panorama internazionale, che si è imposta, negli ultimi anni, dettando i canoni di un nuovo stile e diventando oggetto di culto per i clubbers piu’ esigenti; lo stesso Holden descrive le produzioni dell’etichetta come “Dance music that doesn’t fit in a category”.Un suono inedito che nasce dalla metabolizza-zione di molteplici generi ed influenze, come testimoniano anche gli eterogenei dj set di ar-tisti come Nathan Fake e dello stesso Holden, che nell’ultimo “Dj Kicks” mescola Mogwai e Piano Magic all’elettronica più d’avanguardia di Walls e Caribou, passando per Luke Abbott, ultima produzione firmata Border Community.Anche lo stesso Abbott, ennesimo enfant pro-dige britannico lanciato dall’etichetta, sarà presente al Club To Club per presentare il suo album d’esordio “Holkham Drones”; un’amal-gama di arpeggiatori kraut-rock e tappeti sin-tetici intrisi di melodie sognanti e psichede-liche, perfettamente rientrante negli stilemi della Border Community.Kate Wax è invece entrata solo di recente a far parte del roster della label di Holden, ed il suo secondo album “Dust Collision” è previsto in uscita a fine 2010.Il suo live set a Torino sarà quindi un’attesa anticipazione di ciò che la talentuosa cantan-te e producer svizzera d’adozione ma tibetana d’origine ha in serbo per noi.

In just over a decade of activity and a few sin-gles, a mini-album and a handful of well ar-ranged remixes under his belt, British producer James Holden has successfully carved out a space under the spotlight amongst the most re-quested DJs in the world. As well as having a successful producer career, the young Holden (born in 1980), is also leading Border Community, one of the most innovative and eclectic labels in the world, which has es-tablished itself with the standards of a new style and becoming an object of worship for some of the most demanding clubbers; Holden himself describes the label’s productions as “dance mu-sic that doesn’t fit in a category”.An unheard sound which is born from the me-tabolisation of multiple genres and influences as witnessed also by the motley DJ sets by art-ists like Nathan Fake or Holden himself, who in his recent “Dj Kicks” blends Mogwai and Piano Magic with the most cutting edge electronic mu-sic by Walls and Caribou, going through Luke Abbott, whose debut album is one of Border Community’s latest releases.Abbott himself, the British enfant prodige launched by the label, will be taking part in Club To Club to present his debut album “Holkham Drones”, a concoction of arpeggio phrasing of kraut-rock players and synthetic carpets drenched with dreamy and psychedelic melo-dies spot on Border Community’s motifs.Kate Wax has only recently entered the label roster and her second album “Dust Collision” is being released at the end of 2010.Her live set in Torino is a greatly anticipated preview of what the talented singer and produc-er -Swiss by adoption but Tibetan by birth- has in store.

Sarebbero seguiti l’etichetta Chain Reaction, il versante dub più roots dei Rhythm & Sound, la collaborazione “accademi-ca” con Carl Craig su Deutsche Grammophon, e ora il Trio, a sondare una improvvisazione elet-tronica tesa verso il futuro, una tavola dove si mischiano, siderali, passioni e tensioni di sem-pre. Ad accompagnare la loro performance, il britannico Actress, firma degli album “Hazyvil-le” e “Splazsh”, quest’ultimo proprio per la Ho-nest Jon's dove incide il Trio, il suo live set è tra i più interessanti della nuova generazione “bass” e afro-futuristica.

Moritz Von Oswald is one of the great innovators of electronic music tout court and during Club To Club will performing with Max Loderbauer and Vladislav Delay who together form his latest project, the Moritz Von Oswald Trio. The Berlin artist established himself in the 90s with label Basic Channel and with material produced with Mark Ernestus, using also the alias Maurizio, a blend of Detroit techno fused with a great mini-malism and a dub mentality and production techniques after which techno has never been the same. Then came the label Chain Reaction, the more roots dub of Rhythm & Sound, an “academ-ic” team up with Carl Craig on Deutsche Gram-mophon, and now the Trio, with which to scan electronic impromptus oriented to the future, a palette where his usual sidereal passions and tensions blend together. Their performance will be accompanied by British Actress, whose name figures on albums “Hazyville” and “Splazsh”, the latter released by Honest Jon's, Trio’s label. His live set is among the most interesting of the new “bass” and afro-futuristic generation.

L’attività quotidiana in radio e la ricerca musi-cale mi hanno reso osservatore dei processi di cambiamento della musica. Sono cambiamen-ti tanto lenti quanto inesorabili. Joy Orbison e il progetto di Floating Points sono forse due dei più evidenti effetti di questa evoluzione. O forse ne sono anche un pò la causa. Diffici-le capire quanto la musica segua un percorso evolutivo deterministico o piuttosto determi-nato dalla non “quantizzazione“ delle idee, della società, degli uomini, delle intuizioni. Fatto sta che, anche se i due non sono necessa-riamente accomunabili per genere, in entram-bi senti l’elaborazione di elementi dal passato prossimo della musica inglese con elementi nuovi, ancora non storicizzati e categorizzati: segno che esiste una tensione evolutiva. Un altro fattore importante è la generazione a cui appartengono: l’ultima. Ed è esattamente da questa che ci si deve aspettare la novità, l’espe-rimento, la rivoluzione.

My daily radio show and the music research have made me an observer of music’s chang-ing processes. Changes which are as slow as inexorable. Joy Orbison and Floating Points are perhaps two of the most blatant effects of this evolution. Or perhaps they are even its cause. It is hard to understand how much music follows a deterministic evolutionary path or rather one determined by the “non-quantization” of ideas, society, men and intuitions. The fact is that even though these two acts do not necessarily share a genre, in both the development of elements from recent British music can be perceived together with new elements, still not categorized and his-toricized: a sign that there is a tension to evolu-tion. Another important factor is the generation they belong to: the latest. And that's exactly where we should expect innovation, experiment, and revolution from.

Chissà se Natalizia (Banjo Or Freakout, Disco Drive) e Willis (Allez Allez) avevano previsto un simile clamore al debutto con Walls. Il loro progetto di elettronica ambient a tinte (psych)pop per la Kompakt si è rivelato una delle mi-gliori sorprese del 2010. Un flusso spontaneo di synth analogici e suoni digitali imprevedi-bili, riverberi e delay che, tra kosmische e at-mosfere baleariche, regala mezzora di escapi-smo. In attesa che la Coppola li opzioni per il sequel di Somewhere (perché no), gustiamoci il loro The Gabardine EP con il contributo di Nathan Fake. A schiacciare l’acceleratore sul beat questa sera ci penserà la Numbers, label di Glasgow specializzata in nuovi suoni mi-schiati a techno, electro e hip-hop, con il suo co-fondatore Spencer, il talento sperimentale di HudMo e il gladiatore Lory D.

Who knows whether Natalizia (Banjo Or Frea-kout, Disco Drive) and Willis (Allez Allez) had envisaged such an uproar upon their debuting Walls. Their project of electronic ambient with (psych)pop colours released by Kompakt re-vealed itself as one of the best surprises of 2010. A spontaneous flux of analogical synths and unpredictable digital sounds, reverberations and delays which, between cosmic and Balearic atmospheres gives a half an hour of escapism. Sono bastati pochi EP e qualche live in giro per l’Europa per attirare l’attenzione sulle produ-zioni musicali di Oni Ayhun. Le suggestioni “techno 3.0” della nuova incarnazione di Olof Dreijer dei The Knife sono, infatti, morbosa-mente ammalianti. I suoi live possono essere astratti, dominati dal rumore bianco, con una qualunque parte ritmica che arriva dopo 20 minuti di “suono”, ma comunque coinvolgenti e animati da una fortissima identità artistica. La musica di Oni Ayhun vive di tensione e ri-lascio, di panorami di silicio e cromo, di ela-borazioni rumoristiche che all’improvviso si aprono in layer e melodie che sembrano nate per altri contesti, ma che si sposano alla per-fezione con la parte più drammatica delle sue produzioni. L’epifania di Oni Ayhun è attesa alle 23:00 del 5 novembre al Supermarket. Può succedere davvero di tutto...

Only few EPs and some live gigs around Europe to attract the attention on Oni Ayhun’s music productions. Indeed “techno 3.0”fascinations by The Knife’s Olof Dreijer’s new incarnation are morbidly captivating. His gigs can be ab-stract and dominated by the white noise with any rhythmical part which comes after 20 min-utes of “sound”, yet involving and animated by a powerful artistic identity. Oni Ayhun’s music lives of tension and release, silicon and chrome landscapes, noise elaborations which suddenly open up into layers and melodies which seem to be born for other contexts but which marry perfectly with the more dramatic side of his pro-ductions. Oni Ayhun’s Epiphany is awaited for at 11pm on November 5th at Supermarket. Just about anything can happen...

E’ assortito e prestigioso il programma di Club To Club a Istanbul, che include alcuni nomi di assoluta rilevanza internazionale: tra questi, i protagonisti della “nuova onda” elettronica berlinese, cioè Shed e Marcel Dettmann, il pri-mo reduce dalla recentissima pubblicazione dell’innovativo e acclamato secondo album “The Traveller”, l’altro già nella storia dell’evo-luzione della techno per personalità e visione. Di casa a Berlino sono anche Byetone - co-fondatore della Raster-Noton e sperimentatore altrettanto interessante - e Dixon, tra gli artisti più apprezzati nella scena deep house inter-nazionale. Ma c’è spazio anche per un suono tipicamente britannico come il dubstep, con uno dei “prime movers” del genere, cioè Scu-ba, noto anche per essere il boss dell’ottima etichetta Hotflush, per l’intensità dei londinesi Factory Floor (già paragonati ai primi New Or-der) e per il sound divertente, tra disco e funk, dell’italo-bavarese Munk.

Club To Club in Istanbul presents an assorted and prestigious programme, which includes some names of great international relevance: amongst them, the protagonists of Berlin’s electronic “new wave” scene, and more pre-cisely, Shed and Marcel Dettmann, the former fresh from the recent release of his innovative and acclaimed second album, “The Traveller”, the latter having already entered the history of techno evolution for both his personality and vision. Regulars in Berlin are also Byetone - co-founder of Raster-Noton and an equally interest-ing experimenter - and Dixon, who is among the most esteemed artists in the international deep house scene. But there is also room for a typi-cally British sound such as dubstep, with one of the “prime movers” of this genre, that is Scuba, also known as to be the boss of the excellent la-bel Hotflush, for the intensity of London-based Factory Floor (who have already been compared to New Order in their early days) and for Italian-Bavarian Munk’s fun disco-meets-funk sound.
