The life-sized marble medallion bust of JamesMadison was made in Philadelphia in 1 792, whenMadison was forty-one years of age, by the Italiansculptor, Giuseppe Ceracchi. It hung on the wallsof Montpelier until after Madison s death and wasconsidered by his contemporaries to be the mostfaithful of the likenesses of him. It was purchasedfrom Mrs. Madison s estate by the late J. C. McGuire,Esq., of Washington, and purchased from the Mc-Guire estate for the Department of State by Secretary Thomas F. Bayard.
