The Chibcha is an ancient civilization, the most developed among pre-Columbian Americans. At the
time of the Spanish conquest, it was a sort of confederation governed by five chiefs or “Caciques”,
which depended on several vassals, some of which virtually autonomous and often fighting each other.
The Chibcha lived in round houses with pyramidal roofs while the Caciques had the larger and more
elegant homes. There are still traces of crude zoomorphic sculptures, carved in granite and syenite, and
they even found hieroglyphic inscriptions. In their artistic expression, the Chibcha used the “picture
writing” that, although crude, is well-crafted.
“Our” Mario Navarrete bridges the pre-Columbian culture of his ancestors and the advanced artistic
techniques of the Italic Middle Age artists. He does so through the use of a laborious, ancient, sought,
rare, and difficult technique: the Byzantine Mosaic. What do those abstract signs in the blue/black
luminescent sky mean? It’s a mystery that is up to us to interpret.

MARIO NAVARRETE presents his mosaics depicting the ancient script
of El Dorado at Ganzo, Via de Macci 84/r from March 16 to April 5.
The exhibition opening is scheduled for March 16 at 18:00 at Ganzo.
The artist was born in Bogota, Colombia, but has an international
curriculum: he studied in Barcelona and currently lives in Florence.
He worked, visited, exhibited and taught in different locations
around the world. All these places have greatly influenced his work.
The theme of the collection on display takes roots from his native
land: the Writing of El Dorado. Mario Navarrete is fascinated by the
ancient pre-Columbian civilizations, particularly Chabchi who once
lived in the north of Bogota. This exhibition tells the legend of El
Dorado, focusing on the signs as a form of expression.
Mario’s time in Barcelona inspired his passion for mosaics.
Enchanted by the way the glass captures and reflects light,
influenced by ceramics from Gaudi and then by the school of
Florentine Mosaic, Mario has combined his passions, his knowledge
and his skills.
This collection shows us the Byzantine mosaic technique in which
he combines the stained gold glass with colored Murano glass. The
lighting effects of this technique help Mario explore the signs of
the Chibcha language.
The golden pattern suggests the reference to the Sun God of
these people. Since his arrival in Florence forty years ago, Mario
continued to produce mosaics and communicate his passion
for the art of mosaic. He taught at the School of Byzantine
Mosaic in Ravenna, at the Mosaic School of Friuli, and has held
exhibitions all over the world: Italy, Germany, Italy, Florida.
MARIO NAVARRETE presenta i suoi mosaici raffiguranti l’antica
18:00 a Ganzo.
Firenze.
i mosaici.

Ganzo is a creative learning lab and the school restaurant of Apicius International School of Hospitality. It is a part of the school and
represents the institution’s approach to experiential learning. At Ganzo, students and supervising faculty create high quality, versatile, and
both traditional and innovative menus. The wine list proudly features wines from the cantinas of the Apicius Friends initiative represented
by producers officially affiliated with the institution. Apicius School of Food and Wine Studies as well as Hospitality students and faculty
oversee the daily operations of Ganzo as part of their academic coursework. Principles and practical applications of front/back of the house
management, professional restaurant preparation, professional beverage management, and customer relations are practiced through
experiential learning during their academic program of study. Ganzo reading room and art gallery. Interested artists have the chance to exhibit
their work within Ganzo’s spaces, and the revolving calendar of personal exhibitions generate a continuous renewal of the arts and culture.
