The Worship of God
"Or which one of you, if his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks
for a fish, will give him a serpent? If you then, who are evil, know how to give good
gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good
things to those who ask him!” (Matthew 7:9-11)
In the gospels, and in several other places in the New Testament, one way that Jesus
taught His disciples was through a comparison of a lesser thing with a greater thing, a
lesser truth with a greater truth. For instance, in Matthew 6:26, Jesus compares us to
birds of the air: “Are you not of more value than they?” His assurance to His disciples
(and to us) was that your Heavenly Father feeds these creatures who are of much less
value than we are, so how much more will the Father care for us?
However, just a few verses later Jesus uses a slightly different kind of “how much
more” comparison. No longer was the lesser truth a “lesser” part of creation-a lily of
the field or a bird of the air-and we the greater truth, but suddenly we are now the
lesser thing. In doing this Jesus is able to point out to His disciples the magnificent
love of the Heavenly Father, which is the greater thing. (And ultimately the greatest
thing there is.) Yes, Jesus affirms that we know how to give good gifts. But Jesus isn’t
trying to butter us up and pat us on the back and tell us how wonderful we are. What
He is demonstrating is that even we “who are evil” (meaning there is no good in us)
know how to give good gifts, so how much more will our Heavenly Father who is
perfectly just, perfectly righteous, perfectly holy, and perfectly good, give good things
to those who ask Him!
Our Heavenly Father has freely given us the best, most wonderful gift of all. The best
“much more” statements that free us from the bondage of sin and death are these:
“But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be
saved by him from the wrath of God. For if while we were enemies we were reconciled
to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be
saved by his life “ (Romans 5:8-10)!
The sanctuary flowers today are given by Jim and Jan Hathcote in honor of
our St. James fathers.
