The world’s largest pyramid isn’t located in EgyptBy Jack PhillipsEpoch Times Staff
The world’s largest pyramid isn’t the Great Pyramid of Giza. It’s not even located in Egypt.
The title actually goes to the Great Pyramid of Cholula, in Puebla, Mexico. Known as “Tlachihualtepetl”, which means “artificial mountain” in Nahuatl, it was an ancient tem-ple used by the Aztecs, but it may have been built before their civ-ilisation.
The pyramid was built in several stages, with research-ers estimating its con-struction started in the 3rd
century BC and it ended in the 9th century AD, according to David Car-ballo, an archae-ologist at Boston University, Mas-sachusetts, who spoke with the BBC about the monument.
The pyramid, built in Cholula, is 460m wide and around 66m tall – four times larger in volume than the Great Pyramid at Giza (which is actually
taller, at 138.8m). It is the larg-est known man-made monu-ment found so far, according to BBC. However, one wouldn’t know that it’s a pyramid at first glance – it’s covered in grass, trees and soil, and the Spanish built a church atop it.
By the time Spanish Con-quistador Hernan Cor-tez arrived in the Ameri-cas, the pyramid was already covered by soil and heavy jun-gle foliage.
When Cortez marched into Cholula in 1519AD, within
several hours his forces had killed around 3000 people and burned and pilliaged many of the temples, after being met with lit-tle resistance.
It wasn’t until 1910 that the pyramid was rediscovered. According to the BBC report, locals found it when they were trying to construct a mental asy-lum.
Early excavations made some shocking finds: human bones, deformed skulls and the decapi-tated skeletons of children.
The construction of the pyra-mid remains a mystery. Experts aren’t sure exactly who built the pyramid or when construc-tion began.
According to local myths, it was built by a giant named Xelhua, after he escaped a
f lood in the neighbouring Valley of Mexico.
Surrounding the pyramid was a cosmopolitan, moneyed class of people who made their fortunes on trade routes in the area. “It appears to have been multi-ethnic, with a great deal of migration,” Carballo told the BBC.
The pyramid was constructed using “adobe” bricks – made by mixing mud with other materi-als like straw and baked in the sun – and was painted black, yel-low and red.
The pyramid was abandoned sometime during the 7th or 8th century.
