The School of Dentistry at the University ofPretoria (UP) in April 2013 was informedthat their applications to become an ITICentre of Excellence and ITI ScholarshipCentre were successful.

In September 2012 at the London ITI AGMand Scientific Day, Professor Andre van Zylof UP approached the ITI leadershipregarding an application for UP’s School ofDentistry to become an ITI Centre ofExcellence and ITI Scholarship Centre forSouth Africa. Even though to apply for bothwas an ambitious application, the SA team

or Team Pretoria as they are known underProf. van Zyl were very positive and it wasfelt that the time was right to take the levelof teaching at UP to a higher level.

Team Pretoria, a team of top experts in theteaching of Postgraduate Implant Dentistry inSouth Africa and Africa, is built around theconcept of working together as amulti-disciplinary team. The team consists of:Prof Andre van Zyl, Prof Johan Marnewick,Prof Johan Hartshorne, Dr Gerrit Wyma, DrPaul van Zyl, Dr Christiaan Vorster, Dr Culesvan den Heever, Dr Billy Lombard and Profvan Zyl’s postgraduate students.

At the ITI AGM in Bern, Switzerland in April

2013, Prof Hans-Peter Weber announced thatUP was successful in their bid to be a Centreof Excellence whilst Prof Frauke Mullerannounced that UP had become an ITIScholarship Centre. UP is effectively the firstITI Centre of Excellence and ITI ScholarshipCentre in Africa which in itself is a major andprestigious achievement.

In addition, ASM, Wright-Millners,Hartshorne International and InternationalDentistry African Edition have providedcountless amounts of support andsponsorship to Team Pretoria. A specialmention of thanks is extended to Prof Dr ATLigthelm, Dean of the School of Dentistry

for his support and belief in the vision ofProf van Zyl and Prof Dr Daniel Buser forhis advice and friendship. In furtheracknowledgement of this achievement, thenew ITI president, Prof Dr David Cochranvisited the School of Dentistry at UP duringhis trip to Johannesburg for the recent ITICongress Southern Africa.

UP will introduce its first Diploma inOdontology from 2014, present the first ITIEducation Week in Africa in July 2014 andhost its first ITI Scholar from September2014. This recognition by the ITI is likely tochange the face of implant training in SouthAfrica. DT

The Poster and Case Presentationcompetition at the ITI Congress SouthernAfrica 2013 saw a total of 24 abstractsentered into the competition from doctorsbased across South Africa.

Congratulations to Dr Lira Rahman forplacing first in the poster competition and toDr Howard Gluckman for his winning casepresentation.

A total of 14 posters were entered into thecompetition as finalists (which includedcase presentations not selected as finalists)and 7 case presentations were selected asfinalists. The judging of both abstract typeswas conducted by a panel of international

and local experts which included: ProfDavid Cochran (ITI President), Dr AnthonySclar (key note speaker), Dr Steven Eckert(key note speaker), Dr Govindru Mohangri,Dr Paul van Zyl, Dr Gerrit Wyma and DrYusuf Jadwat.

The much anticipated ITI Congress SouthernAfrica 2013 was held at Vodacom World inMidrand, Johannesburg on the 26th and 27thof July and was a phenomenal success.

The International Team of Implantology(ITI) is a non-profit organization andnetwork for dental professionals from allaspects of implant dentistry and relatedtissue regeneration from across the globe.The ITI HQ is located in Basel, Switzerlandwith 871 Fellows in 55 countries and amembership of 13 366 in 102 countries (asof July 1st, 2013). The ITI was founded in1980 by Professor Andre’ Schroeder and Dr.h. c. Fritz Straumann with the purpose offunding research and laying foundations forcontinuing education.

The ITI Southern African Section isrepresented in Cape Town, Johannesburg,Pretoria, Durban, Port Elizabeth, Namibiaand Zimbabwe. The Section currently has17 Fellows and 251 members. The Sectionwas not only involved in organising the ITICongress Southern Africa 2013 but alsoholds a number of Study Club meetingsacross the country where there is anexchange of expertise, discussions and formembers to be current with any latestdevelopments in implant dentistry.Participation for ITI members is free whilstnon-members can attend up to twomeetings as guests. Currently the ITI hasover 650 study clubs worldwide.

Professor David Cochran, the recentlyelected ITI President was also present at theCongress which was a major blessing andesteemed honour for the organisers, the ITISouthern African Section and the attendingdelegates.

This year’s ITI Congress Southern Africakey note speakers at the ITI Congress, whowere chosen by the ITI Southern AfricaSections, were Dr Steven Eckert and DoctorAnthony Sclar. Both doctors hail from theUSA and are highly regarded internationalspeakers. Dr Eckert and Dr Sclar were giventopics to speak on which included CurrentKnowledge, the Healthy CompromisedImplant, Controversial Issues,Peri-implantitis Current Status, TreatmentPlanning and Emerging Technologies.

As mentioned in the article, ITI CongressSouthern Africa Poster and CasePresentation Competition Results on page 2,the Poster and Case Presentationcompetition was held and judged at theCongress. The posters submitted by the

entrants were displayed in the exhibitionhall where all other delegates could viewthem. The poster presentations were basedon implant related cases and judged oncriteria including background, treatmentplanning and sequence, conclusions, theposter’s layout and references. The casepresentations were presented by eachentrant to the judges and all delegates. Thecase presentation was on a fullydocumented implant related case and hadto be presented in 15 minutes and no longer.It was judged on various criteria includinghow the case was presented, how the casewas put together and presented in the slidepresentation and the actual case study itself.Professor Cochran who also judged thepresentations commented: “the level of thepresentations was the highest quality wecould have hoped for, was very evidencebased which is what the ITI strives for.”

Modern Dentistry Media SA organised theCongress on behalf of the ITI. For the tradeexhibition a new stand approach was takenwhereby all the exhibiter’s stands were thesame. This idea, which has been usedoverseas, was well received by bothdelegates and exhibiters. Many of SouthAfrica’s leading distributers and brandsexhibited at the Congress with their standsinundated with delegates during the breaksand lunch periods. The exhibition was evenhost to 3 international companies.

It can be said that this year’s ITI CongressSouthern Africa was a successful event with

over 340 delegates registering andrepresenting 15 countries. The organisationof the Congress was flawless andprofessional with the venue, VodacomWorld, delivering a high standard of service.By Word of Mouth were the caterers andkept the delegates, speakers and exhibiterswell fed with delicious snacks and lunches.The delegates were treated to a cocktailevening and to a wonderful saxophoneperformance by local performer RikeCoetzee. “I am very excited about theCongress, we have had an incredible twodays.” said Professor Cochran who was

highly impressed with the Congress: “Ireally felt like the whole Congress was wellput together and really reflected at thehighest level what the ITI represents. Thefeedback that we received from theparticipants was just incredible so I am veryexcited to be a part of it. I thought it was justabsolutely first class in every way.”

The next ITI Congress will be held in 2016with venue and dates to be announced.

The South African Academy of AestheticDentistry (SAAAD) hosts a number of studyevenings for both its members andnon-members that focuses on all aspects ofaesthetic dentistry.

SAAAD was founded in 2010, is a memberof the IFED and is currently presided overby Dr Mark Bowes who practices in CapeTown. There are currently nearly 170SAAAD members and membership is opento all dental professionals nationwide. Theaim of SAAAD is to promoteaesthetic/cosmetic dentistry and the scienceof a smile through its members sharingtheir wealth of knowledge and expertisewith other members of the organisation aswell as non-members. Members of SAAADbenefit from a range of benefits such asdiscounted SAAAD fees, their practicedetails are placed on the public area of theSAAAD website for potential clients to findthem, SAAAD has an Accreditation Programto recognise skills and members receiveup-to-date dental news.

The Board of Directors of SAAAD consistsof Dr Mark Bowes, President; Dr AndyEffting, Vice-President; Dr Ivonne Meyer theTreasurer, Dr Jean van Lierop the secretary,Dr Neil Williams is the Northern RegionRepresentative and Mr Phillipe Seha is theTechnicians Representative.

An important feature of SAAAD is that theyorganise a number of study groups andconferences. These focus on various areasof aesthetic dentistry and also present casestudies to the attendees. The idea of the

study groups is for members to share theirknowledge and experiences with othermembers as well as non-members.Currently the study groups are heldprimarily in Johannesburg and Cape Townbut SAAAD wants to further branch outacross South Africa. Sponsorship of theevenings is from Ivohealth, Straumann andWright Millners.

The most recent study evening inJohannesburg was held at Deloitte andTouche in Woodmead on the 18th of June2013 and was sponsored by Straumann. Theevening consisted of 4 different talks whichincluded: a Case Report on the use of a bonelevel implant to replace a congenitallyabsent lateral incisor by Dr Andy Effting,Restorative Principles Applied by Dr HennieReyneke, a Case Presentation on theShortened Dental Arch by Dr GeoffreyPatterson and lastly a talk by Dr HugoLemmen on how to help patients accept thetreatment they need. The evening was wellattended and the presentations were wellreceived.

On the 5th of October 2013, SAAAD, withthe support of Dentsply and Sirona, will hosta full day of lecturers as a Master Class onDirect Anterior Restorations at the ASARAWine Estate in Stellenbosch. Dr Walter Diaswill be the main speaker. He is a formerProsthodontist from Brazil who haspracticed in both Brazil and the USA and hasover 40 published research abstracts andpresented over 200 presentations in morethan 30 countries worldwide on a number

of topics. He will be joined by speakers fromacross South Africa. In addition, the SAAADAGM will be held on the same day.Following this on the 17th of October 2013,SAAAD will be hosting a Case Study eveningat 3M in Johannesburg with confirmedspeakers including Dr Kaplan, Dr vanRooyen and Dr ven der Meulen. SAAAD is

also involved in the organising and hostingof the IFED 2015 Conference to be held inNovember in Cape Town.

Ivoclar Vivadent held aninternational expert symposium last year inGermany for the first time that was focusedentirely on the system and the treatmentresults dentists are able to achieve with it indaily practice. According to Chief SalesOfficer Josef Richter, the system still hasmuch potential.

“With IPS e.max, it is fair to say that westarted a revolution in the field of fixedprosthetics, as it provides a highly aestheticand durable solution not only forsingle-tooth restorations but also for farmore complex indications, like three-unitbridges,” he recently told Dental TribuneInternational.

In addition to the high market acceptanceof its poster child product, Richter said thathis company performed above the marketaverage last year with its entire portfolio,including removable prosthetics and fillingmaterials. Sales of clinical equipment andluting cements like Multilink Automix andVario link II increased by over 10 per cent,he said, despite unfavourable conditionsthat make it more difficult for the companyto operate in regions affected by theeconomic crisis, such as Southern Europe.

“Market reports from most of our officesshow that fewer patients are currentlyvisiting a dentist than potentially should,which is a matter of concern. As a result, weexpect 2013 to be a difficult business yearfor the industry. However, expansion is still

possible, if the market is growing slightly orat all,” he predicted. “Driven by our corebusiness and innovations, our goal is tocome out higher than the market averagenext year.”

Among the recent developments IvoclarVivadent launched this year is TetricEvoCeram Bulk Fill, a further developmentof its nano-hybrid composite line, which thecompany says was designed with a powerfulinitiator for use with the bulk-fill technique

and for tooth restorations in the posteriorregions that are difficult to reach. It alsointroduced BioUniversal KFG, a golden,high-expansion universal casting for millingand the telescopic crown technique suitedto veneering low-melting special ceramics,for example. The IPS e.max CAD range hasbeen expanded and now covers all possibleindications, from light veneers to hybridabutments and bridges with three or moreunits. To make it easier for customers tonavigate their way through IvoclarVivadent’s extensive product offering, theentire portfolio was redesigned into threemain categories: direct restoratives, andfixed and removable prosthetics.

The company has invested heavily in itsinfrastructure recently, with €16 millionreported to have been spent on a newbuilding expanding its headquarters inLiechtenstein, which is intended to increasestorage capacity and hosts highend dentalfacilities where the latest developments areregularly put to the test under clinicalconditions. Moreover, the manufacturingplants in nearby Burs in Austria, whereIvoclar Vivadent produces dentalequipment, such as its Bluephase curinglight, and in Amherst near Buffalo in the UShave been expanded too. New sales officesand subsidiaries are planned in Russia andUkraine, among other countries, a step thatwill expand the company’s already largereach in 120 countries.

“A few years back, we decided tospecifically target emerging markets, whichnow helps us to compensate for mod erategrowth in established re gions like Europeor North America,” Global Region HeadAsia/Pacific Christian Brutzer explained. “InIndia, for example, we have grown from

only 10 people in 2009 to more than 80.”According to Brutzer, the emphasis on

increased local presence has not onlyfacilitated growth in most of these regions,but also dramatically changed the way thecompany is perceived there. Education ac -cording to its own standards is considered akey factor for longterm development, aconcept that has found its way into customerrelationships through the establishment ofInternational Centres for Dental Education,which are intended to offer training toexisting and future customers throughlectures and practical courses. Currently,the company maintains 25 of these centresworldwide, with the largest one in Schaanitself, where training laboratories areoccupied almost around the clock bydentists and technicians from all over theglobe.

“All of our subsidiaries or sales officescurrently provide some form of training. Noother company in the market invests somuch in education,” Richter said.

“The increase in solutions available on themarket has led to confusion among manycustomers of what is right for them,” hecontinued. “Therefore, we want ourcustomers to understand the fundamentaladvantages that come with buying a productfrom us. In this respect, we see anopportunity to provide them withconfidence and peace of mind.” DT

The topic of this year’s symposium was“Decision Making with Oral TissueRegeneration” with presentations by over80 speakers from 18 countries. Duringthe three days, delegates attendedlectures, workshops (17 practical and 3theoretical) and interactive sessionsfocusing on the current knowledge andresearch in oral tissue regeneration.

The Osteology Foundation was founded10 years ago in Switzerland by Dr PeterGeistlich and Geistlich Pharma AG whichis a worldwide leading company inregenerative dentistry. The Foundationpromotes research, apprenticeship and

collaboration between universities andindustry. The focus is on tissueregeneration with biological materials inthe oral and maxillofacial area. TheOsteology Foundation aims to providepractices with new techniques and newproducts that are available as quickly aspossible. The Foundation is currentlypresided over by Professor ChristophHammerle who is certified in bothprosthodontics and periodontics and isbased at the University of Zurich inSwitzerland.

As of July 1, the Japanese firm MitsuiChemicals, Inc. (MCI) acquired HeraeusKulzer, the dental division of Heraeus. MCIwill maintain the existing structure of theHanau-based dental company and willcontinue to trade under the name HeraeusKulzer.

Mitsui Chemicals, Inc. the long-standingTokyo-based Japanese company andHeraeus, the Hanau-based precious metalsand technology group, announced thetakeover of Heraeus Kulzer GmbH on April4, 2013. The acquisition allows MCI toexpand its international activities in thedental sector. By working closely withMitsui which has a proven track record inresearch and development, Heraeus Kulzeraims to develop further innovative solutionsfor dental practices and laboratories.

GUILDFORD – A group of 35 drummershave participated in a drummathon toraise money for dental charities in theUK. The musicians played for a total of 70hours and managed to break theGuinness World Record for the LongestMarathon Drumming by a Team. Thedonations will support projects of theBritish Dental Health Foundation, HeartYour Smile and Bridge2Aid.

To break the current world record, eachdrummer played for two hours continuouslybetween 12 p.m. on 10 July and 10 a.m. on13 July at the Academy of ContemporaryMusic (ACM) in Guildford. The aim was tobeat the existing world record of 66 hours

TheClean My Teeth campaign aims to improvethe oral health of one million childrenaround the world. We aim to do this byeducating people, and that's exactly what

the Foundation does. Raising money forthem was an easy choice, and I hope to raiseas much money as I can.”

Chief Executive of the Foundation, DrNigel Carter, OBE, said: “Ian has done anamazing job organising the event. I'd alsolike to thank everyone raising money for theFoundation. Their support is invaluable.”

Not only did the drummers break theworld record, they also received manydonations. “From start to finish, it has beenemotional and I can’t get over the amount ofsupport I have had from both ACM, theirstudents, staff and tutors, and my friends.We have raised a lot of money for the threecharities involved, which will enable themto continue their great work,” Aguado-Bushstated. BUFFALO, N.Y., USA: Scientists at theUniversity at Buffalo have tested theefficacy, safety and tolerability of a nasalanesthetic spray in maxillary teeth. Theyhope that the spray could replace dentalanesthesia using needles in the future,helping millions of patients sufferingfrom dentophobia.

In a study of 45 healthy adults aged 18 andover who required restoration of onemaxillary tooth, 30 individuals wereselected to receive a nasal spray and 15received a lidocaine injection. Theresearchers observed that the nasal spraywas as effective as the standard anestheticbecause 83 percent of the patients did notrequire any further anesthetic.

The nasal dental anesthetic spray, calledKovacaine Mist, is a needle-free system thatwas developed by St. Renatus, aColorado-based research company. It wasdesigned to be administered through thenasal cavity for use in hard-tissueprocedures, such as fillings and crownpreparation. Unlike conventional injections,it is sprayed into the nasal cavity andanesthetizes only the upper teeth and notthe patient's lips and face, according to thecompany.

However, pivotal trials are warranted tovalidate the findings of this study in anexpanded patient population, the scientistsconcluded. The spray is currently beentested at the University of Maryland and theUniversity of Pennsylvania, among otherinstitutions.

The study, titled "Safety and Efficacy of aNovel Nasal Spray for Maxillary DentalAnesthesia," was published in the July issueof the Journal of Dental Research.

The development of adhesive resincements in dentistry allows maximumpreservation of tooth structure duringpreparation and new indications such asadhesive bridges and onlays.

However, while it opened new possibilitiesin dentistry, adhesive cementation was avery technically sensitive topic for dentalpractitioners because the cementationprocedure involved a great number ofseparate steps, leading to clinical challenges.Developers at 3M ESPE™ have focused onimproving and simplifying the handlingproperties of these products.

In early 2012, 3M ESPE™ launched itsmost recent innovation in this field: RelyX™Ultimate Adhesive Resin Cement, which wasdesigned to combine high bond strengthwith easy handling. Dr. Reinhold Hecht,Division Scientist at 3M ESPE, gave insightinto product development and reported onthe major strengths of the new material.

Dr. Hecht, what was the reason for yourdecision to develop a novel resin cement– was there still room for improvementdespite the large number of availablematerials?Broad market research and direct feedbackfrom dentists revealed a need for a newadhesive resin cement with improvedproperties. The growing popularity ofCAD/CAM technologies for the fabricationof restorations has resulted in a wider rangeof restorative materials used in dailypractice. Particularly etchable glassceramics and resin nano-ceramics aregaining significance, and these materialclasses place very high demands on bondstrength and aesthetics. Existing adhesiveresin cements require a complex procedureusing a variety of adhesive and primersystems to achieve high bond strength.Therefore, 3M ESPE™ developed a productthat combines high bond strength andexcellent overall material properties witheasy handling by the use of only oneadhesive/primer system – Scotchbond™Universal Adhesive.

What kind of restorations may be bondedwith the new material?RelyX™ Ultimate covers an extremely broadrange of indications. The cement isspecifically designed for the cementation ofhighly demanding etchable glass ceramics.However, it is also suited for the permanentcementation of other ceramic, compositeand metal inlays, onlays, crowns andbridges on natural teeth or implantabutments, as well as for non-retentiveindications like Maryland and inlay/onlaybridges. In addition, it may be utilised forthe cementation of veneers as well as postsand screws. Best results regarding bondstrength and simplicity are obtained whenthe product is combined with Scotchbond™Universal Adhesive, a highly versatileadhesive that is equally suited for bothself-etch and etch and rinse techniques.

What are the benefits of this productcombination for the dentist?On the one hand, the adhesive ensures

high bond strength to enamel and dentinboth in the total-etch and self-etch mode,and on the other hand also functions as aprimer providing high adhesion to all typesof restoration materials thus simplifyingthe cementation procedure. Thiscombination is ideal for the cementation ofetchable glass ceramics. The systemRelyX™ Ultimate/Scotchbond™ UniversalAdhesive ensures easy handling by thereduction of several working steps: forexample, light-curing of the adhesive canbe omitted since the cement contains adual-cure activator that initiates the curingprocess of the adhesive. SinceScotchbond™ Universal Adhesive alsofunctions as a metal and ceramic primer aswell as a silane agent for etchable glassceramics, it is not necessary to applyspecific primers to the restorations prior tocementation. To sum up, both products areunique in their composition and wereoptimised to develop beneficial propertieswhen used in combination.

You mentioned “uniqueness” as animportant factor. What are the uniqueingredients incorporated in RelyX™Ultimate Adhesive Resin Cement?As mentioned above, the first keycomponent is the integrated dual-cureactivator for Scotchbond™ UniversalAdhesive. This component is not just anactivator for the adhesive system, but isalso a part of the redox initiating system ofthe resin cement itself and thus isresponsible for the self-curing ability of theluting material. Furthermore, the initiatingsystems used for RelyX™ Ultimate are freeof aromatic amines which are known tocause discolouration. Thus, apart from thedual-cure function, this compound alsocontributes to long-term colour stability ofthe cement in both curing modes. Thethird key feature of RelyX™ Ultimate is aspecific surface treatment of the fillers thatleads to an improved covalent bonding to

the resin matrix. This change in thechemical formulation results in animproved wear resistance. Finally, the newcement was given tooth-like fluorescentproperties, which is particularly important

for highly aesthetic margins. Thechallenge was to incorporate theseingredients without causing unwantedinteraction with other substances in theformulation. DT
