Don Cherry (1936-1995) created an influential legacy by contrasting his Bebop-style Jazz with genres such as Free Jazz and World music. His rise to prominence came in the late 1950s performing Free Jazz with Ornette Coleman. Their music not only shook up the Jazz community with their avant garde sound and inventive compositional structure, but became part of the liberating social revolution that resonated in 1960s American culture.

Cherry’s interest expanded beyond the gamut of American styles into exotic musical structure and composition. His arrangements often juxtaposed instrumental experimentation with the solemn and ancient musical traditions of the ethnic lands he traveled. Cherry’s Bebop-infused solos provided the controversial genre with a traditional Jazz sensibility, helping to maintain an enduring Jazz narrative.

When Don Cherry died, he left behind one of the most unique legacies in Jazz. His individual blend of Jazz, soaked in exotic musical structures and instruments, emphasized artistic expression over technical prowess; and his vanguard sensibilities created a contemporary style and depth all his own. Vibrantly joyful, thoughtfully spiritual, and musically eccentric, Don Cherry fused the ancient

with the modern and the avant garde with the traditional, cementing his legacy as a Jazz original and a forefather of the musical globalization known today as World Music.

From the American Bebop of pianist Bud Powell, to Eastern folk music structures of Japan and the creativity of the band’s principle soloist (saxophone/flutist Lew Tabackin), these various musical influences create a rich texture and originality to the renowned Toshiko Akiyoshi Jazz Orchestra.

THE HISTORY:Born in China, Akiyoshi began by playing piano in Japanese dance halls during WWII. By the 1960s she had gained international acclaim, recording with Oscar Peterson and playing regularly with Charles Mingus. But it was in the 1970s, upon establishing the Toshiko Akiyoshi Jazz Orchestra with Tabackin, that Akiyoshi cemented her place in music and rose to become one of the most respected pianists and composers in Jazz.

THE PROGRAM:This live, full-length DVD concert performance of the 16-piece Big Band, which includes Frank Wess and Lew Tabackin, provides an additional dimension by infusing the concert with interviews from Akiyoshi and Tabackin.
