The World Peace The World Peace Prayer Society Prayer Society at the United Nations at the United Nations The Gandhi-King SEASON FOR NONVIOLENCE The World Peace Prayer Society was a proud co-sponsor of the 12 th annual student celebration of “A Season for Nonviolence” at the United Nations on March 19 th . The event honors the life and work of Mahatma Gandhi and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. from Jan. 30 th to April 4th. Five hundred school children from fourth grade to high school filled a large conference room and found the flag of one of the UN Member States at their seat. They were given permission to wave the flags every time they heard, “May Peace Prevail on Earth,” which quickly became a theme of the 90-minute program. Guests included the Permanent Representative of Nicaragua to the United Nations and keynote speaker Dr. Terrence Roberts, one of the original Little Rock Nine to integrate the Alabama school system in 1957. WE MUST DISARM! UN LAUNCHES 100-DAY COUNTDOWN TO The International Day of Peace 21 September United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon launched the We Must Disarm campaign for the 2009 International Day of Peace (IDP). Over the 100 days leading up to the IDP, Mr. Ban and others will raise awareness of the need to eliminate nuclear and other weapons by issuing a daily message, via Twitter, Facebook, MySpace, email and radio. The Secretary-General is taking the lead by issuing the first ten tweets. As we plan for the International Day of Peace, let us support this vital cause with our prayer: MAY PEACE PREVAIL ON EARTH! Supporting the United Nations with the message and prayer “May Peace Prevail on Earth.” 2009 UN INTERNATIONAL YEAR OF RECONCILIATION To honor the 2009 International Year of Reconciliation, the United Religions Initiative at the United Nations held a series of events connecting the concept of reconciliation to the work of the Commission on Social Development, the Commission on the Status of Women, the Commission on Sustainable Development and the Indigenous Forum, as well as an event with guest Naomi Tutu, daughter of Archbishop Desmond Tutu. A World Peace Prayer Ceremony held to welcome the Trail of Spring/Summer 2009 www.worldpeace.org Dreams global peace- walkers to the chapel of the Church Center for the United Nations in January, and another WPPC was conducted for Africa with Ms. Tutu in May at UNICEF. For the finale, everyone pointed their flags at a large flag of the United Nations, envisioning a world of non- violence for a final heartfelt, May Peace Prevail on Earth!”
