Executive summaryWhether your classroom focus is on one-to-one, personalized, collaborative or interactive learning, more and more schools within the K-12 and higher education spaces are moving towards mobile computing devices to enhance the student learning experience.

This document takes a look at how K-12 and higher education schools in North America are using mobile devices to help students become active participants in the learning process. Mobile devices can help students retain key information while building important skill sets they can use during their academic years and beyond.

Mobility in the classroomStudents at all grade levels benefit from using computer technology in the classroom. Instructors that incorporate digital technologies into their lesson plans motivate students to become more engaged in the subject matter. Tablets and notebooks allow students and instructors unprecedented levels of collaboration. Networked computers let teachers track student progress and provide feedback more rapidly.

Mobile devices allow the student a wide array of information to be gathered at the touch of a keystroke or pen. In many cases, this is causing textbooks and student supplements to become obsolete, bringing savings to students and a relief to school budgets.

Success Story 2:

St. Louis College of Pharmacy

ChallengeSt. Louis College of Pharmacy (STLCOP) decided to re-evaluate the computing devices it used on campus and was determined to find a system that would be best suited for their students. At the same time, the computer device had to enhance the classroom experience for both teachers and students.

SolutionFujitsu LIFEBOOK T726 Tablet PC

Founded in 1864, St. Louis College of Pharmacy is the third-oldest pharmacy college in America. STLCOP has been a leader in the use of digital devices in the classroom, introducing their first one-to-one program in 2002, long before the idea of equipping students with personal devices became popular. Since then, STLCOP has evaluated the technology through an ongoing three-year cycle, to ensure that they have the latest and best devices to meet the needs of both students and faculty.

The evaluation process centers on a matrix of key criteria, including TCO (Total Cost of Ownership), reliability, battery life and robustness, as well as consistency of product design over a long lifecycle. “Fujitsu scored highly across the board. Equally important, Fujitsu was happy to act as a partner rather than a vendor,” said Chad Shepherd, CIO, St. Louis College of Pharmacy. “We were treated as a big fish and given the attention that a global blue chip company might expect.”

Each student in an incoming class receives a brand new Fujitsu T-series convertible, which is replaced when they reach their fourth year. After graduation, students are allowed to keep the device. STLCOP purchases around 500 devices every year with a total of 1,800 on campus at any given time. The tablets are used to run standard office productivity tools and Microsoft OneNote as well as more specialized applications such as Camtasia®, Adobe® Creative Suite, IBM® SPSS®, etc. Students and educators alike have embraced the potential for interactive engagement. The ability to annotate, circle, underline and make notes with the precise pen input is also proving to be popular across campus.

Success story 3:

CatholicHigh School

ChallengeCatholic High School (CHS) wanted to introduce a one-to-one computing programfor students and faculty. It needed to find a technology partner that could offera cost-effective, durable and flexible device.

SolutionAfter researching how other schools were integrating computer devices in the classroom, CHS then reviewed options offered by different vendors. What they found was that the Fujitsu LIFEBOOK T732 Tablet PC offered the best blend of performance, versatility, and functionality. CHS has been recognized five times as a National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence by the U.S. Department of Education. CHS must stay ahead of the technology curve to ensure it's students get the best, most modern educational experience that will provide them with the tools they need to succeed. CHS wanted to introduce a one-to-one computing program that would ensure each of their 1,150 students and 140 faculty members was equipped with personal computing devices.

CHS had a list of important criteria when it came to selecting the appropriate device. Battery life, durability and stylus input capability were all at the top of their list. In addition, they wanted to introduce a student-staffed help desk to handle any on-site breakages. “We needed a device that would last all day because the current campus was built in 1957 and we don’t have the electrical infrastructure for lots of people to plug in simultaneously,” explained Lisa Harvey, Principal, Catholic High School. “We also wanted our teachers and pupils to be able to make annotations with pen and touch.”

After a comprehensive search, CHS decided that the Fujitsu tablets provided the flexibility, durability and performance they needed. Unlike other leading tabletvendors, Fujitsu devices could also be supported by an in-house managed help desk. Ultimately, the aim of the help desk was to troubleshoot computer issues, as well as empower students to be problem solvers.

Success story 4:

Kent School

ChallengeIn addition to instituting Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) policies for students, Kent School also wanted to equip faculty with powerful tablets that could handle the demands of science, engineering and art applications.

SolutionKent School decided to deploy several models from the Fujitsu LIFEBOOK and STYLISTIC product lines. Kent School is a private, co-educational college preparatory school located in Kent, Connecticut. The 1,200 acre campus currently serves 570 students, 30 percent of which represent 38 countries from around the world.

For more than 20 years, Kent School has pioneered the use of integrated digital technology in the classroom. They have worked with multiple device partners and experimented with a one-to-one program, equipping all pupils with their own devices.Eventually, the school implemented a BYOD policy for students; however, the school still wanted to continue providing the faculty with tablets.“The most important criteria when selecting a device is the processing power; specifically, how can it handle the demands of engineering and art applications?” explains Michael Siepmann, Helpdesk Manager at the school. “We also need it to last a full day on a single charge.” After a lengthy search of computing devices, the school decided to use several models of the Fujitsu LIFEBOOK and STYLISTIC product lines.

Kent School is enjoying the flexibility and durability of their fleet of Fujitsu devices. Teachers are no longer tethered to a blackboard or a projector and can use the tablets to make the educational experience more engaging and interactive. “By using the machines to wirelessly project, we avoided having to install smartboards in the classroom – that’s a huge saving for us,” adds Siepmann.

The tablets are responsive, with instant start-up and shut down for optimal productivity, and are built to withstand the rigors of campus life. The pen and touch input is proving particularly useful in mathematics and science.

Success story 5:

St. Joseph’sAcademy

ChallengeTo enrich student learning experiences and outcomes by integrating pen and touch computing into their curriculum.

SolutionFujitsu stepped in to provide every student with a pen and touch convertible tablet PC for use during her time at the St. Joseph's Academy.

One of the things St. Joseph's Academy is doing to enrich their students' learning experience is the integration of pen and touch computing. Fujitsu provided pen and touch convertible tablet PCs to all students at the Academy.

Teachers and Administrators appreciate the durability and quality of Fujitsu devices, given that students can be particularly rough on equipment. “[Fujitsu] machines are very sturdy, which is critical when you have more than 1,000 girls!” notes teacher Dawn Burton. Fujitsu products easily integrate with other technology and programs, such as PowerPoint®, DyKnow™, Lync®, activeboards, e-beams and Moodle™ (the school’s online learning management system) to facilitate a more interactive classroom experience.

St. Joseph's has a student-supported help desk, providing students with the opportunity to understand the inner workings of a computer, while solving problems. Students managing the tablet PC maintenance get involved in systems issues such as: logging in equipment with issues, diagnosis, changing parts and quality-assurance testing. Students working the help desk at St. Joseph’s are professionally trained and work alongside the Fujitsu team to ensure they can effectively troubleshoot issues and provide timely support for their peers. The same students manning the help desk have given the product development team at Fujitsu invaluable and ongoing feedback about Fujitsu products. The partnership between St. Joseph's and Fujitsu has proven to be a win for both sides.
