Studying in Your Major

• Computer Science• All Engineering Fields• Geology• Math • Physics• Chemistry

Study in any CSE major: Second language experience is not a prerequisite for study abroad

Know your four year plan! One term may work better than others.

Studying in Your Major

• Different majors have different semesters that may “work” better for going abroad

• Pre-requisites, tech electives• What time is best for you?• What should you plan to take

here, what could you take abroad?

When Should You Go Abroad?

• Most CSE students study during their sophomore, junior, or senior year

• Be informed and know your options

• Start planning freshman year

You can go any time in your college career!

Most departments recommend sophomore or senior year for semester-based study

Funding an Exchange Program

Is studying abroad more expensive than studying on campus? • Some study abroad programs

can cost significantly more than studying in the US. If cost is a concern, you need to do your homework

• Exchange agreements benefit CSE students

• Most exchange programs are comparable with the cost of studying on our campus

Student Profile: Elizabeth

• Graduated from Civil Engineering

• Spent May Session in Italy• Completed a paid summer

technical internship (IAESTE) in Europe

• Won a 24,000 EUR scholarship to attend the Erasmus masters course in the Structural Analysis of Monuments and Historical Constructions

Page 36: The world is waiting…

Student Profile: Thuong

• Studying Chemistry• Spent Summer ‘10 at our

partner school, POSTECH, as a research assistant

• Her first time abroad and in a lab!

It was amazing! It really, truly was the best experience ever. I'm so in love with traveling now… I worked specifically with metal nanoparticles, mostly silver. I was partnered up with one of the grad students there. All of the members in my lab were intelligent, motivated, and hardworking people. At first I was so nervous in lab because I was afraid that the people in lab wouldn't talk to me. But my lab members were some of the nicest people I have ever met… I honestly can't stop telling people how amazing this experience was.

Page 37: The world is waiting…

Student Profile: James

• Studying Chemistry and German

• Spent an entire year at the TU of Graz as an “outside” student

• Earned technical credits and language credits

• Very affordable study abroad experience!

• Completed a summer internship with a German company in Frankfurt (Summer ‘10)

Page 38: The world is waiting…

Student Profile: Brian• Civil Engineering, ’09 grad• EWB President, participated in

several site visits to Uganda • Won a design competition in

2009 which included a site visit to India from the Acara Institute

• Currently in the Sustainable International Development Master’s program at Utrecht University

I wanted to help others, and to meet other humanitarian-minded engineering students interested in volunteer work. Through EWB… I was able to find leadership and project experiences… Also, my experiences working with IT staff from Student Services and the Dean's Office, as well as the staff in the CivE office and faculty members from several departments, played a large part in my overall experience at the U of M. I met so many devoted people willing to provide support to students in ways they may not have been called upon to help before.
