The World in My HandsHow Going Global Changed My Perspective
Janelle Ward – Global
Perspectives Certificate Program
at North Carolina State University
I. Introduction
Who am I?I am Janelle Ward, a senior majoring in Business
Administration with a concentration in
Entrepreneurship and a minor in Health, Medicine,
and Human Values. This presentation is for the
completion of my final project for the Global
Perspectives Certificate (GPC) and documents some
of my international experiences throughout college.
What is the Global Perspectives Certificate?
II. Academic Work
The GPC requires that students take academic
courses with an international focus behind them.
Courses for the certificate must cover: (1) European
or Eurasian Studies, (2) Latin American, African, or
Asian Studies, (3) Modern Global Issues, and (4)
Foreign Language Studies.
My internationally-focused coursework includes:
• Current Trends in Italian Cuisine (taken abroad)
• Intermediate Italian Language
• Intro to International Studies
• History of South & East Africa
• Technology in Society & Culture
International studies has become an increasingly
relevant and necessary area of study in the modern
age. These courses have challenged me to think
critically and reflect upon cultures outside of my own
while also readying me for personal and professional
contributions to our diverse world.
III. International Experience
Calamari I made in
Italian Cuisine.
The Global Perspectives Certificate doesn’t just require that you learn about
the world in the classroom, but that you’ve experienced the world firsthand.
This could include study abroad, international internships, overseas volunteer
programs, research abroad, or being an international student in the U.S.
My international experience is something that I hold dear to my heart. Before
college, I had barely left North Carolina, let alone the United States. That all
changed in Spring of 2015 when I studied abroad at the Lorenzo de’ Medici
Institute in Florence, Italy. Florence was my first taste of the world (and real
gelato); since then, I’ve been to ten countries in the past two years and I
intend to go to many more. My time abroad has completely changed my life
and has given me great independence, courage, and a passion for travel. The goal of the Global Perspectives
Certificate is to recognize students
for their international studies and
activities, and to encourage students
to continue their global interests both
overseas and within the United
States.
My final day in my Italian Cuisine course, cooking in the
Mercato Centrale.
Valentine’s Day Weekend spent discovering Lake
Brienz in Interlaken, Switzerland.
Scuba diving in Nice, France.
White water rafting in Split, Croatia.
VII. Acknowledgments
• Special thanks to Yulisa Lin for her assistance during this
project.
• Special thanks to Robert Sandruck for his guidance in this
project, as well as Poole Global, and all the members of
Global Corps.
VI. Conclusion
V. Volunteer Service
IV. Co-Curriculars
The GPC also encourages students to involve
themselves in organizations, activities, and other
commitments that are internationally focused.
During my time at NC State, I’ve been lucky
enough to grow and learn through opportunities to:
• Be an International
Exchange Student Mentor
• Be an Incoming Exchange
Student Orientation Leader
• Be a founding member of
Global Corps of Poole GlobalOne of Global Corps’ first
events was a presentation
on financing study abroad
Acts of volunteerism are also a staple of the
Global Perspectives Certificate. Through study
abroad fairs and panel discussions, sharing my
experiences with others and guiding them to
their own international experiences is my
biggest contribution.
My international engagements, both inside the
US and abroad, inside the classroom and out,
have all created a great passion within me to
see the world and to encourage others to do the
same. My life has been forever changed by the
opportunities allowed to me by this university.
After I graduate, I intend to pursue a career in
Study Abroad and go to graduate school in
Scotland for Global Health, so that I might keep
taking the world into my hands.
