    Unknown Author, Unknown Image

The proverbial German phenomenon of the verb-

at-the-end about which droll tales ofabsentminded professors who would begin asentence, ramble on for an entire lecture, andthen finish up by rattling off a string of verbs bywhich their audience, for whom the stack had long

since lost its coherence, would be totallynonplussed, are told, is an excellent example oflinguistic recursion." (Douglas Hofstadter)

Finally, "recursion" is the process of repeatingitems in a self-similar way.

For instance, when the surfaces of two mirrors areexactly parallel with each other the nested imagesthat occur are a form of infinite recursion. Theterm has a variety of meanings specific to avariety of disciplines ranging from linguistics tologic. The most common application of recursion isin mathematics and computer science, in which itrefers to a method of defining functions in whichthe function being defined is applied within itsown definition.

Specifically this defines an infinite number ofinstances (function values), using a finiteexpression that for some instances may refer to

carrying several meanings in the realm of thecreative arts and literary theory. The term isoriginally from the French and means "placing intoinfinity." The commonplace usage of this phrase isdescribing the visual experience of standingbetween two mirrors, seeing an infinitereproduction of one's image.

In Western art history, "mise en abyme" is a formaltechnique in which an image contains a smallercopy of itself, the sequence appearing to recurinfinitely.

other instances, but in such a way that no loop orinfinite chain of references can occur. The term isalso used more generally to describe a process ofrepeating objects in a self-similar way.
