President’s Message Just be nice! Something I have yelled at one or more
of my children when I can’t take anymore fighting and
tattling.
Seems simple enough, right? Yet we still have this
issue in the workplace today. In a recent survey com-
pleted by The Johns Hopkins University and the Jacob
France Institute of the University of Baltimore, eight of
the top ten bad behaviors in the workplace did not rise
to a legal issue. Meaning employees are upset and
leaving companies, not because they are treated in a way that violates the
law, but because people just aren’t nice.
Here are a few of the top ten answers:
People who behave aggressively or who bully others;
Taking credit for someone else’s work;
Talking on a cell phone or texting mid-conversation or during a meeting;
Treating service providers as inferiors; and
Misusing handicapped privileges.
The Workplace Bullying Institute says 60% of employees are stressed out at
work due to uncivil behavior. Not because of safety issues, lack of controls
or audit findings, but because people just aren’t being nice.
At the April monthly meeting, Pattye Moore spoke about being the leader
your employees and coworkers would walk through fire for. That hit me on

how I treat the people I work for and with, as well as how my behavior can impact the organization. Can I treat
others in a way that would influence their behavior towards others in a positive way?
As I look in the mirror, although I can’t think of a time when I would be accused of bullying, I can make a commit-
ment to treat others at work the way my mother taught me: with respect and kindness - minus the sharing of my
toys. Please don’t touch the toys on my desk!

Audit Archaeology and the Psychology
of Fraud (8-hour CPE) Despite significant attention and effort, our understanding of how human behavior affects organizational deci-
sions involving accounting, auditing and aberrant behaviors such as fraud are incomplete. Our assumptions re-
garding who is involved, how it starts, and why it grows are flawed, which leads to a variety of critical judgment
errors. The presentation dives into our deep seated beliefs, and how they affect our interpretations, leading us to
see things that don’t exist, or miss things right in front of our faces. Forensic psychology meets forensic account-
ing in this fascinating look at the tools and methods we can use to uncover important information that has gone
undetected using traditional checklist-type methods. Supported by the latest research in neuroscience and cogni-
tive psychology, this highly interactive session provides the keys to break away from faulty thinking and make
real progress in our efforts to deter and detect fraud and abuse. This presentation examines a variety of infor-
mation gathering and interpretation tools from informational interviewing techniques to tools in data science that
allow better pattern recognition and the ability to assess the relevance and reliability of information.

Speaker Bio:
Toby Groves is a researcher, consultant, and speaker
on organizational psychology addressing topics includ-
ing corporate culture and fraud. Educated in forensic
psychology and forensic accounting, Groves researches
the role group psychology plays in aberrant organiza-
tional behaviors. The results of this research shattered
Groves’ long-held assumptions about the psychology
behind these events.
Groves has been a long time respected executive, CPA,
and PhD student of psychology who also has exposure
to the “dark side” of human behavior and corporate
wrongdoing. Using groundbreaking research, interactive
demonstrations, and a compelling personal story,
Groves inspires audiences around the country to think
