    5Woolpit Complementary Brochure 2015

A growing and widely available body of evidence-based clinical research now shows that Traditional Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine can safely and e ectively treat a wide range of health problems, such as:

Asthma Bronchitis Sinusitis Migraine Nausea Indigestion Constipation IBS High blood pressure Diabetes Neck-Shoulder / Back / Knee pain Arthritis (both Osteoarthritis and Rheumatiod Arthritis) Strains Sprain and other soft tissue injuries PMS Irregular or Painful Periods Menopausal Syndrome Fluid Retention Skin Disorders Neurological Disorders such as Parkinsons Disease Alzheimers Disease Dementia Insomnia the sequelea of Cardiovascular accidents (CVA) such as Stroke In addition, acupuncture is used for addictions to Smoking, Alcohol and other substances. *

    Traditional Acupuncture

Traditional Acupuncture is a complete healthcare system based on ancient principles which date back over 2,500 years. Possibly recorded rst by the Chinese, but was in use long before that by other cultures.

Acupuncturists are trained to look at people as a complex energetic being, a bit like an energetic matrix, where qi, blood and vital essence ow through the body and organs maintaining our health and wellbeing. Their training takes many years to learn and are taught various skills, such as pulse diagnosis, tongue reading and palpation to help make their diagnosis. Acupuncturists focus less on particular symptoms, and deliberate more on imbalances and patterns of disharmony within the individual as a whole. Acupuncturists can then use Acupuncture, Chinese medicine, Moxibustion and massage techniques like Tui Na and Cupping to restore balance.

This approach of making you the best you can be, then initiates your bodys own healing responses to facilitate health on all levels (body/mind/spirit), and thus make it an entirely holistic approach to wellness and not to be confused with the (dry needling) trigger point style of acupuncture o ered by Osteopaths and Physiotherapists.

    Chinese Herbal Medicine

Chinese herbal medicine in this country is most widely used in the form of concentrated powders or raw herbs cooked at home, to make a tea. Chinese medicines sold in this country are veri ed before sale and contain no animal products or endangered plant species.

Chinese herbal medicine is an excellent support to your Acupuncture or can be used as an individual treatment in its own right. Each

prescription is tailored to your own requirements and is very safe to take under the supervision of your practitioner.

It also complements western medicines very well and can help to reduce their side e ects.

All Acupuncturists practicing at Woolpit Complementary are a member of the British Acupuncture Council, bound by codes, ethics, safe practice and are committed to ongoing professional development. Find out more here: www.acupuncture.org.uk *sourced from the BAcC website

Michaela treats a variety of conditions but is particularly interested in muscular-skeletal pain, chronic (long term) illness and facial problems.

As part of an overall service provided by Woolpit Complementary, Michaela o ers free 15 to 20 minute consultations that can relate to any health concerns or queries about treatments o ered at the

centre. A consultation can help you de ne what treatment might suit you best as well as provide direction or peace of mind, to those unsure of who to speak to.

    Michaela & Emma

Michaela Storer BA (Hons), Lic Ac, MBAcC

Michaela and Emma (mother and daughter) set up Woolpit Complementary to bring together practices that complement one another, in complementary healthcare. After having her own practice and observing other clinics, Michaela decided that there wasnt a facility that provided a cohesive platform for individual practices in the area. So they set out to provide a centre that supports not only the patient or client, but the practitioner and therapist too.

Emma had previously been working in London for three companies in the live music industry. Whilst she learnt invaluable skills, her desire to create a business of her own, that gave back to its community and resonated with her own morality took priority. Emma moved back to Su olk to pursue her ambitions, which lead to form a partnership with her dear ol grey haired mother. . .

  • Physical TherapyAssessment, Manipulation & Exercises

Whether poor health, sport or just everyday life leaves you with, posture problems, repetitive strain injury and / or sti and sore joints and muscles they could all be helped with the aid of physical therapy.

The main aim of physical therapy is to loosen sti and sore muscles, decrease pain, increase joint movement and muscle function for better exibility and posture.

At Woolpit Complementary, in association with Woolpit Osteopaths, we o er a wide selection of Physical Therapies:

    Osteopathy

A core principle behind osteopathy is the idea that the body is an integrated and indivisible whole, and con-tains self-healing mechanisms that can be utilised as part of the treatment. No part of the body works, or can be considered, in isolation. Relevant psychological and social factors also form part of the process of patient diagnosis. It is suitable for almost anyone and can contribute to the treatment and management of a wide range of conditions.

The key tools for osteopathic diagnosis include listening to the patients history, examining muscles and joints and observing movements. A wide range of non-invasive manual techniques such as deep tissue massage, joint articulation and manipulation are applied as required.

    Sports and Remedial Massage

As well as the aims listed above, a skilfully applied massage improves circulation and lymphatic ow and has a relaxing e ect on you, the client, should leave feeling well and refreshed. The remedial in sports and remedial massage means applying manual therapy techniques to try to remedy a problem; to relieve pain and to gure out how to prevent the problem reoccuring in the future.

Following a thorough assessment, sports massage treatments are tailored to each individual to achieve the best results. To get the most out of your treatment it is advised to have massage on a regular basis.

    Physiotherapy

Physiotherapy uses knowledge and skill to help diagnose symptoms through history taking and physical examination and thus set goals to help and treat the individual.

Physiotherapists use a variety of physical techniques and modalities such as taping, exercise, massage and electrotherapy to help reduce pain and increase or improve movement.

In addition, physiotherapists have knowledge and appreciation of psychological, social and cultural factors that may in uence people di erently.

Woolpit Complementary o er additional physical therapies, such as Bowen Technique (see Karens pro le), Swedish Massage, Pregnancy Massage, Aromatherapy Massage, Manual Lymphatic Drainage and Thai Yoga Massage. Please see additional literature for further details.

  • Svenja has been interested in sporting activities like running, gym and horse riding throughout her life and has been involved in gym work since 1992.

It was also around this time when Svenja su ered extremely intense migraines that would last up to 2 weeks at a time. When medication was not helping her pain, her GP recommended massage to help the tension in her upper back and neck, to try easing the headaches.

It helped so much that it made Svenja a true believer in the powerful e ect that a well applied massage can achieve.

Svenja enjoyed working hard in business management, but her experience of massage led her to retrain as a sports and remedial massage therapist.

Training on a subject that she already had so much experience of was a joy and has been working full time, as a Level 5 quali ed massage therapist, since 2010.

Svenja is also quali ed in Manual Lymphatic Drainage, Pregnancy Massage and Organic Facials.

Counselling and psychotherapy are umbrella terms that cover a range of talking therapies. They are delivered by trained practitioners who work with people over a short or long term, to help them bring about e ective change or enhance their wellbeing.

Usually individuals choose to have counselling because they are experiencing di culties and distress in their lives. Sometimes people can feel isolated at times, even where an individual has the most supportive family and friends, it can be di cult if not impossible to explain why, for example, they may be feeling anxious and/or depressed. And it is often easier to talk about personal, family, or relationship issues with a person who is independent of friends and family.

Other life issues and events which can be very di cult to deal with include bereavement, divorce, redundancy, health issues or bullying. However, you do not have to be in crisis or on the verge of one, before choosing to talk to someone. You may be experiencing underlying feelings of dissatisfaction with life in general, or be seeking balance in your life and spirituality. All of these reasons and more will bring individuals to counselling.

All counsellors practising from Woolpit Complementary are registered with the BACP or UKCP and are bound by their code and ethics.

Please see the next page to view individual pro les.

CBT o ers helpful strategies for managing emotions such as depression and anxiety. It is also e ective for Obsessive

Compulsive Disorder, Phobias and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. CBT helps us to challenge the way we think and the

Chrissie has been a counsellor since 2007, training to work with individuals of all ages. She has seen a wide range of both adult and younger clients, with many and varied concerns ranging from personal development and careers, to loss or bereavement, bullying and self harm, to depression and suicide. Chrissie has worked in schools and primary care, as well as private practice, taking referrals from 5 years old upwards.

The backbone to all of Chrissies work is the person centred approach, trusting in all of her clients to know what is right for them.

Her aim is to provide a space which enables exploration of private lives, somewhere open and honest, non-judgemental and understanding in which it is possible to explore all aspects of our life, gain a greater understanding and bring about change.

This in turn can help us to feel more in control, develop a deeper sense of who we are and make us more able to respond positively to our lives.

With children, Chrissie uses play therapy, believing that play allows children to explore their world and gain a sense of their own identity, in the same way that talking allows adults to express and consider their world.

    Hypnotherapy

    15Woolpit Complementary Brochure 2015

Hypnotherapy is a skilled verbal communication, which helps direct a clients imagination in such a way as to bring about intended alterations in sensations, perceptions, feelings, thoughts and behaviour. In a typical hypnotherapy session, the hypnotherapist will ask the client questions about previous medical history, general health and lifestyle. The hypnotherapist and client will decide together on the changes or goals that are desired.

Hypnotherapy can be applied to a wide range of medical and psychological problems. Areas of application include anxiety and stress conditions, weight control, addictive behaviours (including smoking, alcohol and substance misuse) and con dence issues. Hypnotherapy is also used to enhance performance in several areas such as sport and public speaking.

Hypnosis is an inward focusing of attention through which the demands of the outside world are switched o . It is a state of deep relaxation during which the critical analytical mind shuts o making the unconscious mind more accessible.

During hypnosis you are not asleep and nothing can happen without your consent. You can hear everything being said and afterwards will usually remember all that has happened while in hypnosis. Hypnotherapy is a useful supplement to orthodox medicine and can achieve considerable success in its own right.

Piers is a registered Clinical Hypnotherapist and Psychotherapist. Specialising in depression, anxiety and fear Piers enjoys helping people and using his knowledge and experience to do this.

O ering a wide range of therapies many of his clients are referred by GPs, consultants and other medical professionals. Hypnotherapy can tend to be the last resort where people have tried other, more mainstream, avenues which have failed.

Initially trained at The Cambridge College of Hypnotherapy, Piers has trained with some of the Worlds Leading Therapeutic Teachers in many di ering approaches of Hypnotherapy and Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP), Analytical (Hypno - Analysis), Ericksonian, goal-orientated NLP, Guided A ective Imagery, Suggestion therapy and Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT).

As an Internationally Registered Life Coach and Executive Coach Piers also helps businesses and corporations ensure the safe emotional state of employees.

  • Re exology

    Repro exology

    18 Woolpit Complementary Brochure 2015

Re exology is a gentle non-invasive therapy which helps to restore a person to a more tranquil temperament, improve their mental condition, and enable the person to cope better with lifes demands.

It encourages a generally healthier body by facilitating the proper functioning of the circulatory system thus enabling the supply of nutrients and oxygen to reach all cells of the body.

If an area of the body is su ering from in ammation, tension or congestion the corresponding re ex points in the feet will be sensitive when pressure is applied. The body is able to remember injuries and operations just as we can within our memory, therefore it is possible for a trained re exologist to pick up not only current conditions but also past conditions that have been suppressed and may remain unresolved.

Re exes on the feet and hands can highlight any areas of weakness or vulnerability that may give rise to problems in the future.

Re exology helps to give the body what it needs, this might be a reduction in the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome, menopause, or even assistance in losing weight, it is all about bringing balance, harmony, and a sense of well-being to the body.

Relaxation is the key to good health, and during a treatment many relaxation techniques are used. These techniques help release muscular tension to bring about a state of complete calmness.

Reproductive Re exology, known as Repro exology, is a specialised form of re exology used to aid fertility, during the pre-conceptual care phase, the aim would be to correct any hormonal imbalances, improve physical conditions, manage stress levels, and correct any cycle irregularities.

Treatment for WomenInitially treatment for the female would entail weekly sessions working through one entire menstrual phase however, if there are irregularities in the cycle, such as clotting or an irregular cycle then weekly treatments would need to continue until the cycle is balanced. Once balanced, the female partner would then go on to an actively trying to conceive program which would entail treating the female partner as close to ovulation as possible (week 2 of her cycle) and again 5-7 days post ovulation in order to enhance implantation (week 3 of her cycle). However it may be necessary to change this treatment plan if for example the female has low egg reserves or su ering from a condition such as endometriosis or PCOS.

Treatment for MenRepro exology can also be highly bene cial in helping a male to regain control of his own fertility journey. Initial treatment during pre-conceptual care for the male client would involve treating on a weekly basis and this would continue for 6 weeks; any general conditions in order to maintain good levels of health would also be taken into account.

Also, Maternity Re exology involves a gentle treatment using specialist techniques incorporating balancing of the endocrine system, lymphatic drainage. Linking re exology and massage; it is an extremely safe treatment which can be carried out throughout the pregnancy.

In Janets own words: My mother was my inspiration for the work that I am doing now. She developed breast cancer in her late menopause at the age of 49 and sadly passed away soon after.

This experience made me question if mammography was the only tool of detection and I decided that I wanted to have another

way of keeping a check, something that is also free from radiation and pain.

    20 Woolpit Complementary Brochure 2015

Digital Infrared Thermal Imaging (Thermography) has been comprehensively researched for more than 30 years, and while it should not replace technologies such as Mammography, it has many valuable functions, namely: early detection of neovascular patterns (blood supply) giving a physiological picture of the body. It provides improved detection for women with dense breasts. It can also serve as an adjunct to inconclusive mammograms.

Thermography involves a procedure of taking a photographic image of a patient, producing a map of the infrared patterns of the body.

Any modi cation of this infrared map on images taken over months to years can indicate early signs of an ab-normality. After taking a base thermogram and then regular series of thermograms, the patients physiological map can be monitored and early signs of abnormality.

However, thermography does not have the ability to locate a tumour. Consequently, breast Thermographys role is an adjunct to mammography and physical examination, not a replacement.

Combining essential oils and therapeutic massage, Aromatherapy Massage is helpful for a number of health conditions. Typically, it is most e ective in relieving stress and tension. This type of massage can also boost your circulation, help to eliminate toxins and increase feelings of wellbeing.Stress: there are many symptoms that arise, that can go unrecognised or ignored as being stress related: disturbed sleep, anxiety, mood swings, skin rashes, headaches, fatigue etc.Tension: Aromatherapy Massage can help to relieve the pain and tension and remind you to relax.

    What else can it help?

Aromatherapy can also provide relief of the following conditions: menstrual problems, pregnancy and the menopause, poor circulation, high blood pressure, respiratory conditions including asthma and sinusitis, rheumatism, arthritis and joint mobility, skin conditions.

Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is an advanced massage therapy in which the practitioner uses a range of specialised and gentle rhythmic pumping techniques to move the skin in the direction of the lymph ow. This stimulates the lymphatic vessels which carry substances vital to the defence of the body and removes waste products.

MLD is both preventative and remedial. It can be relaxing; promote the healing of fractures, torn ligaments, sprains and lessen pain. Can be used to treat certain chronic conditions: sinusitus, rheumatoid arthritis, scleroderma, acne and other skin conditions. It can relieve uid congestion: swollen ankles, tired pu y eyes and swollen legs due to pregnancy. Its also often found to be an e ective component of the treatment and control of lymphoedema and assists in conditions arising from venous insu ciency. As well as encouraging the healing of wounds and burns and improving the appearance of old scars.

Ear candles are not candles as such, but hollow tubes made out of cotton or a mixture of cotton and linen (cotton ax). The fabric is sti ened when it is sprayed or dipped with beeswax. Good quality candles are natural products and their burning time varies depending on the candle type, but it is generally around 10 minutes per ear.

A mild suction is created when the ear candle is lit. This and the heat of the released vapours circulating inside the ear, gently massage the eardrum and help to soften and loosen the earwax. The change of temperature leads to a change in pressure and expansion to help clear congestion. Gentle heat is experienced around the ear promoting the blood and lymph circulation.
