In January, we’ll be working on reviewing our Woodview Way expectations in our common areas, including the hallways, cafeteria, and playground. Currently, our students are working towards earning a school-wide movie celebration by meeting and exceeding expectations in the cafeteria during lunchtime. As always, we appreciate your efforts and support at home in helping our students understand the importance of creating a welcoming and positive environment for all. We’d also like to thank some of our school and community sponsors who have helped provide incentives, prizes, and other support for our students this year as part of The Woodview Way program:

• Woodview PTG • Little Caesars • McDonald’s • Ozaukee Skateland • Jumping Country • Dairy Queen • Papa Murphy’s Pizza

Cold Weather Clothing As temperatures drop and the snow falls, please make sure that your child is appropriately dressed for playing outside at recess. This includes a warm jacket, hat, and gloves or mittens, as well as snow pants and boots for playing in the snow. Students are not allowed to stay inside if it is not indoor recess, so they should plan for outdoor fun at recess and dress accordingly. Also, if a child is healthy enough to be at school, they are healthy enough to be outside at recess. Please do not send notes saying that your child needs to stay in at recess, as we do not have the supervision necessary to watch students both inside and outside. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact our main office. Thank you for your help with this.

Emergency Notification System The Grafton School District is using an emergency notification system in the event of a school closing or other emergency situation. The system works directly with Skyward Family Access information and allows you to select how you wish to be contacted, either by phone, email, and/or text message. Make sure you log into Family Access on a computer and update your text numbers. Please note that this update cannot be made using the Mobile Family Access app (on a phone or tablet). Emergency / Closing Information Directions Student Council Update Student Council has had a busy couple of months. We recently collected coats and blankets for two wonderful organizations - the Cathedral Center and Mr. Bob's Under the Bridge. Thank you to all who donated! The Student Council members also donated toys to the Cathedral Center's family playroom. We are sure many children who visit will benefit from all their generosity! In December, the school store raised $213 and sold many pencil sharpeners and multi-colored pens. We are looking for some new items for our next store in March. In 2015 Student Council has many exciting projects in store. We will have our next popcorn sale on February 11th. Student Council will be running our annual penny war. And finally once we have escaped winter - our members will be painting paw prints around the sidewalks of Woodview. Thank you for all your support of Student Council! Mrs. Cotton and Mrs. A GHS DI Team Project One of the Destination Imagination teams from Grafton High School is working on a service project focused on giving back to the community. Please read over their informational flyer at the end of the newsletter and consider helping out if you are able to. Thanks! PTG Update Each Woodview Monthly Newsletter includes an update from our Parent Teacher Group (PTG). Please make sure to read the update at the end of the newsletter for information about what the group is doing and how you can help out and be engaged in what we are doing here. PTG meetings take place the third Monday of every month in the Woodview LMC. Family to Family Connection This month, our parents are sharing an article about how to help develop leadership skills in your child from an early age: http://www.parent.net/article/archive/leadership.shtml

Happy New Year! Hope everyone had a wonderful holiday break. Fun Night will be here before you know it. Please sign up this month to volunteer. To make this night a success we need help from our families to make it happen. If you have donations for the classroom baskets please make sure to have them at school by Jan 21st. If you have any questions please contact me. Thank you, Stacy McMahon

One of the Destination Imagination teams from Grafton High School are doing a service project. The team consists of Evan Bernd, Kaitlyn Ewe, Claire Olson, and Bryan Olson. They want to give back to our community to those who are going through difficult times. To accomplish this they are going to create and give out care packages to these people. The team needs your help getting supplies for their packages. The supplies that they need are:

• Travel toothpaste • Toothbrush • New or gently used gloves/mittens • New deodorant • Bar soap • Floss • Small pocket sized tissue • New lip balm • Sock • New winter hat • Hand warmers • Washcloths • Scarves • Winter headbands • Baby powder • Also accept cash donations

If you are interested in donating, there will be a donation box in your schools office.

Your “K.Y.N.D” donations will contribute to their mission that allows people to feel good knowing there are others out there that care.

What’s Happening at Woodview?

5-Year-Old Kindergarten

Ms. Breitlow and Ms. Meisegeier

How are you growing as a reader?

Frankie

I am using letter sounds to figure out tricky words.

Oliver

Taking apart compound words helps me read bigger words like motorboat. It’s motor and boat!

Ryan

I am counting the number of words in a sentence.

Zak

I am reading popcorn words. My favorite one is “a” because it’s in lots of books.

Ciara

I take a picture walk to think about what the characters are doing.

Isabella

I think about all the sounds and make them. It helps me with new words.

Mattux

I am learning the difference between letters and words.

Nico

I look at the whole word to make sure I read the right word. Like I don’t say cat for cast.

Mia

I can say each sound and blend them back together to say a word.

Logan

I am learning a song and hand signals that help me remember the sounds.

Isabella

I am learning to take “picture walks” before I read a story. It helps me get my ideas about words.

Michael

I make sounds in a word by starting with the first letter and going through to the last one. Then I say all the sounds together. I have to see if it makes sense.

Gaby

I am learning how to use letter sounds to read new words.

Leo

I am using patterns to read. I like finding “star word in the middle” books.

Griffin

I know some words right away like go, hug, to, and the!

Aaron

I look at pictures and the first letter of a word to figure it out.

Taryn

I am learning to look at all of the pictures before I read the story.

Duncan

I learned that you can use your imagination to think about characters.

Kyleigh

I can find jackpot letters in books.

Chase

I can figure out words that have /ch/ at the beginning, like my name… like cheese!

Gavin

I am learning to look at the first letter of a word to help me read. Like I can tell the difference between doggy and puppy because puppy has /p/ at the beginning.

Sam

If I know my popcorn words I only have to figure out the new words.

Genevieve

I look at punctuation and the picture to think about what kind of voice to use for a character.

Cami

I look at pictures to get my ideas about the story.

2nd Grade Ms. Heston, Ms. Banaszak, and Ms. Risic

My favorite subject in second grade is writing. I like researching in books and on iPads. I liked putting real pictures in the nonfiction book I wrote. ~Molly My favorite thing we are learning about in second grade is polygons. They are fun to learn about and fun to make on geo-boards. ~Matthew I like learning about energy in science. It's cool to learn about energy. Why don't you try it? ~Griffin My favorite part of second grade is reading. It's fun to learn new things and there are a lot of topics to choose from! ~Cora

4th Grade

Ms. Reilly, Mr. Mangin, and Ms. Wagner

Fourth graders have continued to work hard and grow as readers, writers, mathematicians, scientists, and geographers. We are so happy to welcome Mrs. Wagner back for a few months! Please read the update about what has been going on in our classes.

Writing By: Adam Cotton

In writing, we have been working on changing our personal essays to persuasive essays. Everyone agreed it was a lot harder than we thought. Mine for example, was “My Favorite Birthday Party” and that’s hard to change into a persuasive essay, so I changed it to “Soccer”.

Reading By: Adam Cotton

In reading, we have been making presentations. We have done research using books on different non-fiction topics, like mountains. Then we shared our presentation with the class.

Math By: Lukas Hensel

In math, we have been working on fractions. Some of the things we have been working on include finding equivalent fractions, comparing fractions, and adding and subtracting fractions with common denominators. In this unit, I think 4th graders learned a lot about fractions and enjoyed learning in our math groups. I sure did!!!

Science By: Lukas Hensel

In science, the 4th graders have been working on different types of weather. We learned about the parts of the water cycle (evaporation, condensation, and precipitation). We also investigated the factors that determined water cycle. One of our experiments helped us understand air pressure. One last thing, we learned about is how to predict weather.

Social Studies By: McKenna Van Roo

After break we plan on learning the five regions of the United States. In groups we will be researching and doing a presentation on the five regions. People will love to learn about the five regions. Thank you for your continued support from home. We are looking forward to all of the learning adventures the new year will bring!
