When & Where Did it Take Place?
• The festival became known as Three Days of Peace & Music.
• It took place August 15-18, 1969.
• Took place near Bethel in upstate New York on fields owned by a farmer named Max Yasgur.
Who Went?
• 27 bands performed• Most performers were blues
musicians or deeply rooted in the blues.
• Some musical highlights were: Jimi Hendrix, The Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Janis Joplin, Santana, and Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young.
• Over 400,000 fans gathered including students, hippies, and opponents of the Vietnam War.

guitar rendition of “The Star Spangled Banner”.

Influences
• Woodstock was a symbol of 1960s American counterculture.
• It was a big introduction to rock music.
• It influenced drugs, alcohol, and a lot of rock music.
After Woodstock
• Some performers from Woodstock are still performing and playing music today.
• 8 out of the 27 groups have had a group member die.
• Most of which died of a drug overdose.
• Those groups that have had a member die have either gotten a replacement or broken up.
• After Woodstock hippies grew into a powerful force in the U.S. anti-war movement.
