August 2017 The Woodlawn Witness Youll notice that this months Fellasophiesis significantly shorter than usual. Thats because Im making room for our Worship Director, Daniel Bannister, to offer you some points to dwell on over the next few weeks. He has some great thoughts and I encourage you to prayerfully consider what he brings to our table in this months issue. Speaking of encouragement, August 20 th brings us an event that has been a wonderful blessing to our congregation through the years. On that evening, we will host our annual Ice Cream Social.” Talented chefs (self included) from Wood- lawn will be blessing us with home-made Ice Cream from their favorite recipes. This year the event will be held at Clay Hill Farm & Wilderness area (not to be confused with the home next door where we have had it in the past.) You do not have to be an Ice Cream Chef or even a con- noisseur to be a part of this yearly tradition. There are other deserts available, and the fellowship with your church family members will make it worth the effort to attend. Allow me please to heartily encourage you to be a part of the festivities on August 20 th at Clay Hill. Youll miss out and well miss you if youre not there. You’re invited to our annual Ice Cream Social Sunday, August 20th 6:00 PM Join us at Clay Hill Farm Pavilion (7425 Old Lebanon Road) for homemade ice cream, snacks & fellowship with your church family. If you will make ice cream, please contact Jennifer at the church office or Ouida Rivers. If you are not making ice cream, you are asked to bring a snack & a 2 liter drink to share. Volume 23, Issue 8 Oh sing to the LORD a new song; Sing to the LORD, all the earth! Sing to the LORD, bless His name; tell of His salvation from day to day. Psalm 96:1-2 (ESV) With over 400 references to singing and 50 direct commands to sing, the Bible leaves no room to doubt that we as worshippers are called to worship God in song. Jesus himself sang hymns with his disciples (Matt. 26:30; Mark 14:26). We are told that believers filled with the spirit ought to sing to each other and to the Lord (Ephesians 5:18-21). While scripture clearly calls us to sing , we often engage with one another in verbal fisticuffs over what we should sing. Often, theology is tossed right out of the window when these talks ensue and is instead replaced with stylistic preference and our pride. There certainly isnt anything wrong with having preferences, but cherishing old tunes because they are familiar, or anything new simply because its new, cannot be our basis for objective judgment of the songs we sing to God. Fortunately for us, Jesus lays the groundwork very clearly for what true and glorifying worship should look like. In John 4:24, Jesus is speaking to the woman at the well (when she herself is arguing with him about the nature of worship - particularly where to worship) and he says, God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.(ESV). Here we see very clearly that there are two cornerstones to correctly worshipping God: spirit and truth. Thus, the two questions we must ask ourselves in evaluating what we sing and how we worship are: 1.) Is this song engaging my spirit with the music in a way that allows me to worship God with my spirit and emotions. 2.) Does the song, particularly the lyrics, contain scriptural truth about God that will allow me to see him more clearly and edifies me in my faith? Failure to ignore either side of the coin will result in less- than-authentic worship; period. This month, my challenge to us is to think about worship in context of both spirit and truth. When we engage in worship through singing weekly, let us ask of ourselves to be more than just bystanders. Instead, let us worship freely in the knowledge and truth of Christ Jesus, who has redeemed us from our sin and shame with all joy, until we join with Him in glory.

Volume 23, Issue 8

“Oh sing to the LORD a new song; Sing to the LORD, all the earth!

Sing to the LORD, bless His name; tell of His salvation from day to day.”

Psalm 96:1-2 (ESV)

With over 400 references to singing and 50 direct commands to sing, the Bible leaves no room to

doubt that we as worshippers are called to worship God in song. Jesus himself sang hymns with his disciples

(Matt. 26:30; Mark 14:26). We are told that believers filled with the spirit ought to sing to each other and to

the Lord (Ephesians 5:18-21). While scripture clearly calls us to sing , we often engage with one another in

verbal fisticuffs over what we should sing. Often, theology is tossed right out of the window when these talks

ensue and is instead replaced with stylistic preference and our pride. There certainly isn’t anything wrong

with having preferences, but cherishing old tunes because they are familiar, or anything new simply because

it’s new, cannot be our basis for objective judgment of the songs we sing to God.

Fortunately for us, Jesus lays the groundwork very clearly for what true and glorifying worship should

look like. In John 4:24, Jesus is speaking to the woman at the well (when she herself is arguing with him

about the nature of worship - particularly where to worship) and he says, “God is spirit, and those who worship

him must worship in spirit and truth.” (ESV).

Here we see very clearly that there are two cornerstones to correctly worshipping God: spirit and truth.

Thus, the two questions we must ask ourselves in evaluating what we sing and how we worship are:

1.) Is this song engaging my spirit with the music in a way that allows me to worship God with my spirit and

emotions. 2.) Does the song, particularly the lyrics, contain scriptural truth about God that will allow me to

see him more clearly and edifies me in my faith? Failure to ignore either side of the coin will result in less-

than-authentic worship; period.

This month, my challenge to us is to think about worship in context of both spirit and truth. When we

engage in worship through singing weekly, let us ask of ourselves to be more than just bystanders. Instead, let

us worship freely in the knowledge and truth of Christ Jesus, who has redeemed us from our sin and shame

with all joy, until we join with Him in glory.
