Your starting point is the church at Saint-André-des-Eaux. This itinerary offers several ‘laps’ of 10, 20 or 30 km: the choice is yours! Along the smaller roads which link the various hamlets you will discover the lush green ‘bocage’ and the southern part of the Brière Nature Park. Be sure to stop off at the little inland port of Tréhé at the edge of the Brière marsh and to admire the panoramic view from the orientation table at the port of La Chaussée Neuve.

Things to see along the way…• The bread ovens

Just like the one at ‘Les Landes’, the bread oven at Marland dates back to the XIXth century. At the time it was used on a regular basis by the inhabitants of the village. It was fully restored in the 90s by the town council. Today it is used, but occasionally at the time of local fairs by the villagers who still enjoy making their bread using traditional methods, baking it over a wood fire.

• The port of TréhéThis small inland port is full of authentic charm and is frequented today by many walkers and anglers. From it many channels lead away under the gentle swaying branches of the willows and the nodding heads of the wetland grasses, inviting you to venture forth and to discover the vast variety of flora and fauna within, ever changing with the seasons.

• La Chaussée NeuveAmongst the reed beds is where you’ll find the port of La Chaussée Neuve, ‘gateway’ to the 7 000 hectares of the Brière marshlands. It is here that the ‘chaland’ (traditional flat-bottomed boat) really holds its own! It allows nature lovers, local people or tourists to go on a voyage of discovery, along the peaceful waterways, rich in the flora and fauna of the marshlands. From the orientation table a magnificent view stretches out before you revealing this unique landscape, the bell towers of the surrounding villages, and on a clear day you may well see the elegant silhouette of Saint-Nazaire’s bridge...

• The cross of BrangouréComplete serenity and bucolic landscape is the environment in which you will find this Celtic style granite calvary surrounded by its four corner stones dating back to 1844. It was raised in the middle of the XIXth century at the request of Doctor Méresse of Guérande, owner of the farm at Le Petit Brangouré, at the spot where a young man from his family had died after falling from his horse.

The quality label ‘Parc naturel régional’ is awarded to rural areas which possess a clear identity and a rich natural and cultural heritage the balance of which however, is both fragile and potentially under threat. The concept of ‘Parc naturel régional’, pioneer of sustainable development, was created as early as 1966. The Regional Natural Park of Brière was created in 1970 to protect as an urgent priority and to raise awareness of/and promote the marshlands of Brière and their incredible ecological riches: water meadows, hillocks, reed beds, channels, peat lands, which provide home to a vast diversity of fauna and flora.
