THE PRESIDENT’S KEY NOTES

Greetings: As Thanksgiving approaches I realize how thankful I am to be a member of such a special Organization and to know such awesome women. From feeding first responders, collecting for UNICEF, providing food in back packs for kids, collecting books, brightening a senior’s day with BINGO, or sponsoring the Arts Festival, I know the recipients are thankful for all the projects our club supports. Give yourself a pat on the back. In Federation – Julia Yeargan “There’s no happier person than a truly thankful, and content person.” Joyce Meyer

MEMBER NEWS

World War I Armistice 100th Anniversary: Nov 11, 2018

Woman’s Club Members are reminded to encourage your churches to recognize this 100th Anniversary. Since it began at the “11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month” every citizen is asked to take a moment to remember at that exact hour on Nov 11, 2018. Churches, family gatherings, individuals: all are asked to note this hour across the entire United States. This is a teaching moment for your grandchildren. This is a moment to remember your departed family veterans. This is a time to appreciate the sacrifice of some 116,516 American soldiers. To pause and remember at the exact hour, month and day on the 100th Anniversary is a unique opportunity! Let’s record our commemoration for the FVWC report!

GFWC PRESIDENTS PROJECT: HEALTHY WOMEN Conscious deep breathing can improve your wellbeing. What you should know: Deep breathing can quickly help you feel calm. Techniques vary, but some can be done anywhere, anytime. Do not force it, alternate regular breath with suggested techniques. Connecting body and mind through the breath benefits health. Technique: Take a few deep breaths allowing the belly to balloon outwards. Once you feel a bit relaxed begin: (1) exhale to a count of six; (2) allow several normal breaths and again focus on exhaling to a count of six; (3) let the breath be smooth and feel the body relaxing; (4) switch focus by inhaling to a count of six; (5) again, allow in and out breathing naturally; (6) combine inhaling to a count of six and exhaling to a count of six. Allow your body to ease into it.

Ways & Means – Second Vice President: BARBARA KENNEDY AND PATTY BYRNE We have twelve homes in down town Fuquay-Varina for the home tour. We will need docents at these homes and will have a sign- up sheet at the next meeting. We will also need to help several homes to decorate. I will advise dates for this project. Barb Kennedy will check on sponsors and ask Garden Hut to sell tickets for us along with Shoppes on Main. In Flower power we made about $166. 11 people bought from flower power. Thank you to all who contributed.

Public Issues Our next project is supporting the Wreaths Across American with placing wreaths on Veterans’ grave markers at the Greenlawn Memorial Gardens and White Chapel Cemeteries. On December 15, all across American dedicated volunteers come together to mark the gravesites to honor our service members. This year we are placing wreaths on the gravesites Shirley identified in her work with the history museum on this Veterans’ day ceremonies. Sign-up to help place the wreaths, we are purchasing the wreaths from Flowers on Broad Street.

Arts – Chairs: MARTHA SMALLWOOD AND JHAMI WUNSCH

Continue to work on your art projects for the show in January. Things are moving along

well for the literature. Thank you for all my members for help while I have been in

California for 40 days, when I return November 20th. Thank you Debra, for doing the Arts

report this month.

Conservation – Chairs: SANDY ALLEN AND PAM BOOKER

Sustainable Holidays - The holiday season with its accompanying buying, wrapping and celebrating substantially increases the amount of waste and electricity we generate. Shop locally, make your own gifts, and reduce waste. When you simplify the holidays you often reduce your costs, stress and waste. Tips for Green Holiday Shopping - Shop close to home or in areas where stores are near each other Consider giving gifts that are locally produced, organic and/or fair trade Online shopping

Gift Certificates Make your own gift Make a donation to a non-profit organization in the name of your loved one Gift Wrap, Holiday Cards and Packaging - Instead of wrapping a gift add a bow or ribbon to product or gift box Make the wrapping part of a gift i.e. gardening pot or mixing bowl Wrap in scarves, blankets or towels Gift bags/baskets can be used over and over again Be creative and give old materials new life - magazines, newspapers, maps, art work....make great wrapping Use last year’s holiday cards to create this year’s tags Ask companies to ship your packages using paper instead of polystyrene packing peanuts Avoid buying metallic and plastic wrapping paper as it is not recyclable Be like Santa and only make one trip! The Conservation Department will be collecting the items below for the SPCA. Please bring to the monthly meetings and Pam Booker will deliver to the shelter. The animals THANK YOU! SPCA Wish List (in order of need) Cat Litter – both non-clumping and scoopable cat litter Cat Food – canned pa te food (finely ground variety) Kitten Food – canned and dry Puppy Food – canned and dry For the continued good health of our shelter animals, we need high-quality brands such as IAMS, Purina ONE, Purina Naturals, Science Diet, Natural Balance, Eukanuba, Blue Buffalo, HALO and Canidae/Felidae. Education – Chairs: SHIRLEY SIMMONS AND DOT MAYS

Education CSP member, Julia McCombs, has had contact with a lady librarian whose school library now has NO BOOKS. Education is giving a donation since this is a special person to one of our members (We know there are multiple examples of this same disaster) We had a $100 BOOK fund set aside as that was a theme for our CSP this year, so what better cause? We are asking you the membership, to help us in this way: (1) prepare to buy a raffle ticket on a wonderful surprise basket, all proceeds to go into this cause (at the November meeting) Julia Yeargan is donating this basket. If you all bring $3, you will enjoy and make out like a champ if you are the winner, and we should raise another $100. 2) collect any really “good shape” elementary level books which you may have had for a grandchild or someone and can now donate. Julia McComb’s will deliver books that we collect as a “stopgap” measure for use by children in this school. (Robeson County) MINI GRANT RECEPTION November 8 Members of the FVWC are all invited to attend the Mini Grant Awards Reception at the clubhouse on November 8, 2018 at 4:00 p.m. Teachers and administrators are invited to come to receive their checks from the mayor and a certificate of award from Education CSP. You will enjoy learning the innovative ideas proposed in these grant applications and willmeet some wonderful enthusiastic educators. All winners have been notified and invited to attend the reception. Many have replied with delight to be recognized. The Wake County Schools is planning to send a representative as well. Since funding is provided by the Town of Fuquay-Varina, we generally expect to have Town Commissioners join Mayor Byrne for the reception. ARMISTICE DAY 100TH ANNIVERSARY OF WORLD WAR I The Friends of the Museums invite you to visit their Facebook post on the Bell Ringing for Nov. 11 at the 11th hour. Churches have been invited to participate and many are planning some type of recognition even if they do not have bells to ring. On Nov 11, 1918 at 11:00 a.m. all firing ceased on the trenches of Europe and soldiers from both the allied and axis powers poured out to celebrate. Some 80,000 men from North Carolina participated in this war. At 10:45 on Nov 11, the Friends will have a short program in front of the Ballentine School House Museum followed by 11 rings to the old bell there. While we realize this interferes with the time of church services, the public is invited to attend if they wish to do so. We are happy to have you participate in your church and honor the men from your membership, too. Research is going on across Fuquay-Varina to establish information on men who served.

Please note that this a national event, sponsored by the North Carolina Cultural Resources and the Federation of Historic Places which the local Friends of the Museums are implementing here in Fuquay-Varina. More than 3/4 of the N.C. counties all had promised in September, hopefully 100% since then. Bells will ring all across the nation!
