“The Woman in the Story” Screenwriting Competition

Get your writing groove on! This award is meant to highlight aspiring New Mexico screenwriters who have an intriguing story with a central female character.

Residents of New Mexico have a chance to submit a 10 page screenplay with a female central character. Submitted scripts must be original screenplays and the sole property of the applicant(s). The script must have a female protagonist and/or strong female theme.

All ages are eligible. However, a parent or guardian must sign the entry form for any author under eighteen (18) years of age. All entries will be judged using the same standards regardless of age.

The winner will receive a cash award of $1000, the NMWIF Athena Screenwriting Award and a table reading of their winning script at a NMWIF event in Spring, 2015. The two runners-up will also receive prizes.

The submission process will open September 22, 2014 and must be received no later than December 1, 2014. Submissions received after 12/1/2014 will not be considered. The winners will be notified on February 1, 2015.

Rules & Regulations

Applicants must submit the following by December 1, 2014 deadline:

• Completed entry and release forms emailed with screenplay;• PDF file of an original short screenplay with a female central character, up to ten (10) pages in

length, in standard screenplay formatting. • Email forms and scripts as attachments to [email protected]• $25.00 entry fee by check made payable to NMWIF to PO Box 33351, Santa Fe, NM 87594 or on

our website at the following link: http://www.nmwif.com/screenwriting-competition/ . Entry fees will not be returned or adjusted.

Submitted scripts must be original screenplays and the sole property of the applicant(s). The script must have a female protagonist and/or strong female theme. An entrant may submit a maximum of two (2) screenplays. Multiple entries should be sent separately and must include completed entry forms and applicable fees for each screenplay.

Collaborative work undertaken by two (2) writers is eligible. Collaborative work by three (3) or morewriters is not eligible. One collaborator should be designated the primary contact. One entry form can be filled out, but both collaborators should sign the Entry and Release Forms.

Judges will do “blind readings” of all scripts. The applicant’s name, email address, phone number and any other identifying information should ONLY be included on the entry form and should not appear on the cover, title page or any other page of the script. Under no circumstances will substitutions of either corrected pages or new drafts of the entry will be allowed.

The submission process will open September 22, 2014 and must be received no later than December 1, 2014. Submissions received after 12/1/2014 will not be considered. The winners will be notified on February 1, 2015.

Three semifinalists will be chosen by a panel of New Mexico screenwriters. The final selection of the winner will be made by British screenwriter, Helen Jacey.

We welcome and encourage a diversity of material. That does not include culturally insensitive material or subject matter.

Release Form(this form must be signed, dated and submitted with all entries)

1. I/We am/are the author(s) of the Screenplay which I/We have submitted to the New Mexico Women In Film “The Woman in the Story” Screenwriting Competition (hereinafter ‘Competition).

2. I/We hereby state that I/We am/are the sole and exclusive owner(s) of all the rights thereto and there are no disputes regarding ownership of the submission. I/We have the full authority to submit the Screenplay to the Competition.

3. I/We guarantee the submitted Screenplay does not invade or defame the rights of any person, living or dead, and I/We fully indemnify the Competition against any claim made for such invasion, defamation or other violations of law.

4. I/We will indemnify, defend and hold harmless the Competition, its employees, judges, individually and collectively, including their heirs, personal representatives, officers, directors, successors and assigns, from and against all claims, demands, losses, damages, costs, judgments, liabilities and expenses (including attorney fees) arising out of or in connection with any and all claims of third parties, whether or not groundless, based on any screenplay or other materials submitted by me to the Competition.

5. I/We shall be solely responsible for taking all the necessary steps to establish and protect my/our copyright in the submitted Screenplay and the Competition shall have no obligation with respect thereto. The Competition shall have the right to reproduce all or part of said Screenplay for use by the Competition in its judging process and present the Screenplay to third parties, but shall not have the right to use said Screenplay for other commercial purposes.

6. I/We understand that the Competition accepts no liability whatsoever for loss of or non-receipt of my Screenplay or for the unauthorized use of all or part of my Screenplay by any person and I/We agree to remain fully liable in connection therewith.

7. I/We agree that this is a Screenwriting competition, not an evaluation service and that the judges will not be providing feedback to contestants regarding their submission(s).

8. I/We hereby agree to abide by the decisions of the Competition judge(s) with regard to all matters and decisions, including those decisions involving sole discretion, relating to the Competition.

9. I/We understand that the entry fee is non-refundable.10. I/We understand that because of the Competition’s involvement with the entertainment industry: a) the Competition

may receive many ideas, formats, stories, suggestions and other materials which they do not solicit or otherwise request; b) the Competition does not generally accept, consider or review unsolicited screenplays unless the person submitting has signed this Release Form; c) no confidential relationship is established by submitting the Screenplay to the Competition.

11. I/We understand that we may submit the Screenplay or similar Screenplays to other persons and competitions.12. I/We understand that the Competition and its judges will review the Screenplay within a reasonable period of

time after a copy of this signed Release Form, the Entry Form and the Screenplay have been received. If the Competition decides that they wish to use the Screenplay, I/We may negotiate in good faith to reach a written agreement covering the use of the Screenplay and any compensation or payment.

13. If either the Competition or I/We transfer, assign or license any rights under this agreement, the person make the transfer, assignment or license will still be responsible for performing his/her/its obligation under this Agreement.

14. If more than one party signs this Agreement as the submitting party, then references to ‘I’ or ‘We’ throughout this Agreement shall apply to each such party.

15. I/We have read and retained a copy of this Agreement and understand this Agreement. The Competition has made no representation, oral or written, of any kind to me/us. This Agreement states our entire agreement.

16. I/We have read all the competition rules, regulations and release, understand them and have complied with them. I/We understand that failure to adhere to the Competition Rules and Regulations and the Release Form will result in disqualification for which no refund of entry fee is due.
