Time to look back at last year and celebrate it. Time to look forward to this year and anticipate it. I’m writing this on Sunday, January 20. Last night was Wichita Region’s Award Banquet. We celebrated ourselves. Some of the highlights: Race Driver of the Year was Ray Barker, who changed to H Production and won his class in the Mid-Am Championship. Most Improved Solo Driver was Kevin Griswold, who competed against his brother Jeff in the same car. Event of the Year went to Paul Sherman for the July 15 Greyhound Park Solo. Rookie of the Year was awarded to Dave Buck. (Dave told me we embarrassed him. I hope we do a lot of that in the future.) Finally, Member of the Year went to a very deserving Guy Roberts. Guy is so involved he spent more time at the podium than most presidential candidates. Thanks for everything, Guy. We have an ambitious year planned for 2008. The first Solo is in March and we go on from there. Acquiring new Solo sites is still my highest priority for this year. Right behind it is working to develop a race worker recruitment program. Solo Reportby Guy Roberts

Okay so this is my official first article as Solo Chair. After David Guilliams left early last year when he took a job in Chicago, I signed up to help Marcus Hidvegi with the remaining solos of last year. Unfortunately, Marcus will not be able to continue on this year as a Solo Chair so I will be taking over all of it. If you've ever had the desire to be a Solo Chair, let me know; I will be needing help this year.

On my plate this year is the continuing search for good sites for us to hold our Solos on. Hawker Beechcraft is becoming unusable and we are still working on getting the use of Wichita Greyhound Park, but as you all know it has closed down. It still could be an option but we won't know until discussions progress.

We have other site options that we will be looking into this year as well as the possibility of having some of our Solos benefit charities. We are also in discussions with several possible sponsors, and as that continues we will definitely keep you posted.

I think we have a wonderful Solo program and I look forward to implementing some new things this year as well as doing the same things that people really like. If you have any ideas or options for changes or new things, feel free to come up and find me and tell me all about it. Or you can e-mail meat pretty much any of the website addresses.

Don't forget, too, that instead of February's Solo Steering Meeting before the Membership Meeting, Dave Geis will be holding a Safety Steward refresher class. If you ARE a Safety Steward you should really attend this. If you've ever thought about becoming one, come to the meeting and you can learn some valuable information.

So I hope to do you all proud this year. Help is appreciated and never turned down. Remember that everyone that helps put on these events is a volunteer. So join us and make this the best year ever at the Wichita Region SCCA Solos!

Election Resultsby Jason RogersOur election results from last Fall are in. Lisa Noble was elected as our new Area 6 director. As she promised, the first Director’s Chair Newsletter and Board of Directors meeting summary have both been posted on www.midiv.org. Look for the director’s chair icon in the left toolbar. If any member would like to receive the newsletter via US mail contact Lisa at 1723 Fair Lane, Manhattan, KS 66502.

Locally, we elected the following club officers to serve 1 year terms: Regional Executive - Keith Pfautz, Assistant Regional Excecutive - Brian Meyer, and Secretary – Warren Meyer.

We also elected the following new Board of Directors members for 2 year terms: Jason Rogers, Kevin Anderson, and Andy Timmons.

The remainder of the BoD, which have 1 year left in their terms are: Charlene Bettinger, Dave Gird, and Guy Roberts. Since Keith was re-elected, Dave Geis remains the Past RE.

The RE appointed the following positions: Race Competition Chair - Scott Bettinger, AVRG – Keith Pfautz, Scott Bettinger, and Dave Gird (BoD appointment), Rally Chair – TBD (volunteers?), Merchandise & Activities – Steve Roepken, Membership – Charlene Bettinger, Webmaster – Guy Roberts, Wail Editor – Jason Rogers, Treasurer – John Houston, Solo Chair – Guy Roberts, and Pointskeeper – Bruce Bettinger.

Many thanks to our out-going officers, appointees, and board members. This group includes: David Guilliams (how's Chicago?), Mike Herrick, Paul Sherman, Lu Geis, Tom Dupler, Marcus Hidvegi, Judi Pfautz, and Chuck Clark (Area 6 director). Without your contributions we would not have had such a successful year in 2007.

Member Profile – Greg Lawsby Jason RogersIf you've been out to a solo event any time in the past few years you've probably seen an unusual little car affectionately known as 'The Phrog' in F-Street Prepared and it's enthusiastic owner, Greg Laws. Greg the Phrog, techincally a Renault GTA, have had several successful years regionally and in MiDiv Solo. Greg answered my questions via email.

What's your hometown?Winfield, KS

What do you do for a living?I was only really living when behind the wheel in competition but for the past 30 years I earned my paycheck in the auto damage appraisal business, first as an independent and then as a physical damage adjuster for a large insurance company. I'm now on disability for Parkinson's.

How long have you been a Wichita region member?Except for a 13 year absence caused by stomping off mad when SCCA National outlawed a car that I built, I've been with the region since 1981 or so.

What has been your best experience in the club?Hands down: the entirely unexpected honor of receiving the 2005 Claude Van Doren service award.

How did you first learn about the SCCA?From a guy who kept buying performance parts from me when I worked in the parts room at a Peoria, Ill Chevrolet dealership. I was a drag racer but became intrigued by his project of building a Camaro for the AS class in SCCA road racing. We became friends and I was his mechanic when he took the Camaro to the old track at Wentzville, MO for his first driver's school.

I've come to know you as a Solo guy. Have you ever road raced before? What about t&d rally? I rented the Camaro for two driver's schools and a regional race. My friend provided everything except the engine which came from my street car. Sadly my street engine was stronger than his race engine but I tried not to gloat about it. <grin> I borrowed Duane Dunham's Spitfire for another regional race but then financial reality reared its ugly head and that was that for road racing. The experience was thrilling but ultimately road racing didn't suit me as well as Solo. I also participated in the Detwiller Park hillclimb several times, both before and after rolling a "brand-new" 1979 Pontiac 6.6/HO Special Edition Trans Am there. It had 445 miles on the odo when I put it on its top. The only t&d rallies that I've been involved with were here in Wichita. I helped restart our rally program with Bruce Bettinger and others. I was the Rally Master for the first Road Dog Rally and I wrote the route without having ever participated in a t&d rally before!

Why the Renault GTA and what do you appreciate most about the car?The reason why the GTA is that it followed me home one day and whimpered until I started to feed it. After that there was no turning back.Actually it was sitting at a gas station in Derby with a "Make Offer" sign on it. The station had replaced the clutch for a lady who then couldn't pay for it. I remembered that all the magazine articles of the period said that the GTA was a natural autocrosser so I bought this one to try it out. I ended up liking it for the fact that it was indeed a natural autocrosser and I also liked that it was an oddball orphan and for the most part unknown ... that way I could blame my lack of driving skill on the oddball car! I was always looking for that diamond in the rough that everyone else had missed. My other "successful" cars were a 1971 Chevrolet Vega Panel Express in HS and a

rather modified kit car (Chevy V8, Hillborn injection, etc) in EM -- the latter being the one outlawed, or at least re-classed to non-competitiveness, by SCCA.

Member Profile – Greg Laws (Continued)

Does it make you nervous autocrossing such a rare car with hard-to-find parts?

Nervous, no. Financially stupid, yes. I could have built three Honda Civics and arguably had a quicker car for what I spent but I relished the challenge. Besides that, the GTA developed a personality that no Honda will ever have [Hey! Watch it! - Editor]. It became part of the family and I now have stuffed frogs, frog toys, frog everything displayed proudly all over the house, most from friends and family. It has been a lot of fun being Phroggy.

Has the Phrog always been in Street Prepared or did you start out in a Stock class with the car?The Phrog ran its first year for me in HS but a problem arose at the Solo Nationals. The problem was that the stock suspension was never designed for DOT slicks, especially at Nationals where the rubber laid in the corners gets r-e-a-l-l-y sticky. The tires would grab and the car would heel over to where it would go up on two wheels ... on three separate corners! I had a very concerned corner worker come to me and say " ... and once I think that I saw daylight under a third wheel too!" I'm not known for my intelligence but FSP started looking like a MUCH safer class to play in!

If the SCCA didn't exist, what other car hobby would you be in to?I really don't know. Drag racing was too expensive and ultimately too simple and too boring. I don't have the education to be an engineer or any interest in being someone else's mechanic. I might have tried motorcycles but I don't like being cold, wet, or run over. I was never good at model cars. My guess is that I would have played with my own cars for my own amusement and wouldn't have been in an automotive organization.

What's the most interesting or best or fastest car you've ever owned? My favorite was the 1971 Vega Panel Express which cost me $550 at 36,500 miles and which I drove, worked out of, moved with, got married, carried the entire Wichita Region solo equipment in, autocrossed, and more. Ran it to 256,000 miles and sold it for $550.All were interesting for different reasons. The fastest was the 1989 Porsche 944 Turbo, but not by much. The 1968 Charger on a long road would have challenged it for pure speed. The quickest would have been either the 1965 Impala or the 1969 Nova 396 but one ran 1/8 mile in Missouri (Army days) while the other ran 1/4 mile in Illinois so I can't match them exactly. My college car 1964 VW Bug had aerodynamics that caused the front end to float at 105 mph -- interesting stuff like that.

It is very cumbersome to use right now and also some people are remiss in getting information to the Pointskeeper so points may be applied to those who earn them. This will be brought up next Board meeting with suggestions and also a form for chair persons and others to fill out and get to the Pointskeeper so it will be easier to get the points applied to those who earned them.

Website: Guy Roberts gave report. Hits are down right now. Guy presented the budget. It was moved by Charlene Bettinger, seconded by Kevin Anderson and passed to approve the budget as presented. We had some discussion about the domain, Currently it is under Rob Foster’s personal name. Rob is going to get that changed to Wichita Region SCCA’s name.

WAIL: Jason Rogers gave the WAIL report including the summary of last year’s WAIL. We were a little over budget even with the increase in the cost of postage and one of our advertisers changing to a smaller ad. Budget was presented for next year. It was moved by Charlene Bettinger, seconded, and passed to approve the budget as presented.

WAIL (cont'd)Followed a discussion on whether to stop mailing WAILS except to those who request it be mailed. WAIL would be available, as it is now on the web. It was decided that we need to continue to mail WAILS out the members. To do otherwise, we would need a bylaws change to not notify members in writing of the time, and place of the membership meetings and the expense of that plus the work out weighs the mailing the WAILS.

Membership: Charlene Bettinger reported we have 226 members currently. We are gearing up for the new weekend members and all the changes National is doing on membership this year. More about this later.

AVRG: Keith Pfautz reported we will have three races at Hallett this year. This includes a Driver’s School/Regional race. Since we only had two races at Hallett in 07, we had 50 people who are 100%. The 100% awards have been ordered, but have not arrived yet. There will be some $ returned to the regions from last year’s racing, but not as much as in 07 because we are doing a Driver’s School this year and that always loses money.

Rally: We did not have a report. We do not, at this time, have a Rally Chair for 08, but are working on it.

Treasure: John Houston presented the accounting. It was moved, seconded and passed to approve the Treasurer’s report. John let us know insurance fees will be increased this year.

Solo: Guy Roberts gave the report. Last year we had pretty good attendance at the Solos. This year we have 13 events scheduled, 5 of which are at Wichita Greyhound, and 1 Endurocross. We have had to increase the non member fees to $15.00 above member fees to accommodate the new Weekend Member requirement from National. 2008 Solo budget was presented. It was moved, seconded and passed to approve the budget with the addition of a safety net item (miscellaneous) to the budget to cover any items that might come up. Trailer repairs are not done yet, but are being worked on.

Merchandise: Report given by Steve Roepken. Merchandise has not been inventoried yet. It will be done soon and a budget presented at the next Board Meeting. It was moved by Dave Geis, seconded by Charlene Bettinger, and passed that we approve an amount now so we can get Solo Rule books ordered.

Policies: Keith Pfautz presented the club policies. (Club polices expire each year and need to be approved for the new year) It was moved, seconded and passed to approve the Club policies as presented. (No change from last year)

New Business: It was requested Bruce Bettinger see if the slot car track new owner would consider letting us to an IROC there again this year and if so, set a date. Bruce said he would.

Old Business: Trailer breaks. Discussion on purchasing a portable box for people to put in their vehicle to enable them to pull the trailer with electric breaks died for lack of a motion.

Respectfully Submitted by Charlene Bettinger, acting Secretary.
