THE WIRE CLOTHES HANGER

THE WIRE CLOTHES HANGER

ANDREA RAMAZZINA 1156439A brief introduction: the historySome historians believe President Thomas Jefferson invented a forerunner of the wooden clothes hanger. However, today's most-used hanger, the shoulder-shaped wire hanger, was inspired by a coat hook that was invented in 1869 by O. A. North of New Britain, Connecticut

GeneralitiesThe wire clothes hanger is now used all over the world and has several kind of users, from the big industries till the common citizens. This is mostly because it has a good mechanical characteristics at a really low production price. For example for a small-medium quantity (100-500 hangers) the cost is around 0.05 per piece. The structureThe structure of the wire clothes hanger is really simple: it is a simple loop of wire, most often steel, in a flattened triangle shape that continues into a hook at the top.

First part: creating the wireStarting from cilindrics of steel , throught several processes of extruding and drawing, the thickness of the wire decrease more and more.

A drawing machines with multiple draw mechanismThe shaping process (1)When the wire reached the needed dimension, it is ready to get in the clothes hanger machines. At first, it is cutted in the volunted length, then it gets bent to form the base of the hanger. The wire ends are now winded strongly in order not to let the hanger open when it will be put under pressure. The final part is bending one of the end, forming a hook.

The shaping process (2)As mentioned before, this process is really simple and it takes only few seconds. Here is showed a video to better understand the cutting and bending steps
