Community News

Dear Winton Community and Readers of the Winton Herald,

On behalf of the members of WBTA, welcome to our monthly update! We all agreed the best way to keep you updated is by doing so each month with a report of kinds as to how the WBTA is travelling, and hopefully have your continued support moving forward. We are committed to the local community as a whole and focusing heavily as the name suggests, on the Businesses and Tourism progression and sustainability in our Winton Shire.

To introduce ourselves, the WBTA Executive Committee members at present are as follows: President- Hylton Ward; Vice President- Jeff Close; Treasurer- Vicki Jones; Secretary – Kate Cremin-Rose (who is also our Coordinator).

The Winton Herald features heavily on our agenda and is one of the most familiar parts of WBTA that people recognise. Tahnee Oakhill is the Editor of the Herald and her efforts are appreciated with hours spent volunteering to help keep the Winton Herald going and our community informed. We cannot thank her enough for all she has already done and continues to do.

The Bronze Swagman Award for Bush Poetry and the Junior Poetry Competition are two other familiar activities WBTA runs that continue to be part of our community. We recognise the huge volunteer efforts of Jeff Close, and his wife Bente Moller, in coordinating and supporting the history associated with these iconic events.

The 2020 Bronze Swagman entries have now closed, and judging has commenced. 2021 will see the 50th Anniversary Celebrations of the Bronze Swagman with an event to be held at “Windemere” in September 2021 - the timing will also work in with “The Outback Festival”. Thanks to Robyn Stephens, Anne Seymore, and all the WBTA members for putting thought and effort into involving as many as possible and broadening the horizons whilst working together for this event.

The 2020 Junior Poetry written competition is going ahead, this year with the theme being QANTAS. Normally this culminates in a face to face event with Junior Poets and schools coming from around the state. This year we are still working on the best way to present this event given the current circumstances and will keep you updated as this unfolds.

The Winton Business Awards night is something new from last year and will continue to be very much on the Agenda. Although holding the event may be a bit hard this year it is still being worked on and proving very popular. This is an event we really want to progress as the 2019 awards was a lot of fun and was supported well amongst the business community as well as the broader community. This was a start to something I fully believe can be part of our future. It aims to Celebrate improvements and achievements, encourage continuous development to retain and grow our local businesses whilst hopefully becoming a calendar highlight!

WBTA is a membership association, so in closing I’d like to encourage as many businesses and individuals as possible to become involved and give your thoughts as a member of WBTA. We have already seen new members come onboard this year, supporting the rural businesses and offering valuable feedback to help us all move forward productivity and sustainability.

Kind Regards,

Hylton Ward - President- WBTA

Community News Community News 2020Friday 29 May

Update:With the gradual easing of the COVID-19 restrictions of the previous months the Winton Community and Aged Care Services Inc held their monthly meetings on Sunday with members attending in person (observing social distancing) and via telephone. It was great to catch up and discuss some of the exciting things that have been occurring as we navigate the pathway to establishing our Aged Care Continuum for the community including the building of Jessamine Place.

The Feasibility Study is underway and the Strategic Plan is almost completed for the organisation. It was a great opportunity to discuss future fundraising ventures and also some of the current and ongoing partnerships that we are developing.

The next monthly Meeting will be held on Sunday 21st June 2020 at 10am in the training room at the Neighbourhood Centre and everyone is welcome to attend.

Recycling - Donations:Winton Community and Aged Care Services has been approached by a number of Community members in relation to our organisation setting up a Containers for Change Account so that people can donate their

recyclable products with funds used for the Jessamine Place Building Fund.

If you would like to be part of this project all you need to do it label your boxes/bags with the following details and drop them off at the Containers for Change site here in

Winton:

Jessamine Place

C10263940

All funds will then be deposited into our Bank Account to help us build “Jessamine Place”.

Thank you to the community

for your continual support.

Winton Shire Council | Community Notices WINTON “BUY LOCAL” GIFT CARDS

Have you just moved to town? You may be eligible for a “Buy Local” Gift Card.

Cards will be distributed from the Winton Shire Council Main Office. Please bring proof of residing in Winton.

If you do not wish to obtain a Buy Local Card for yourself, you can give it to a Local Community group in need.

The Buy Local Card is available from the Council Administration Office.

The guidelines for the distribution of the Winton “Buy Local” Cash Card are as follows: -

a) Each Winton ‘Buy Local’ Gift Card will be pre-loaded with $300 and shall be valid for a period of 12 months;

b) The cards will only be valid within the Winton Shire Council area; c) To be eligible to receive a Winton ‘Buy Local’ Gift Card, the resident’s name must be listed on

the current Electoral Roll for the Winton Shire Council or be a resident with proof of residing in Winton;

d) Cards will be distributed from the Winton Shire Council Main Office; e) Before a card is issued, the resident will need to provide a form of identification (e.g. drivers

licence, Medicare card, pension card etc.) satisfactory to staff and must sign for the card; f) Only 1 card will be issued per person, and lost cards will not be replaced; g) Cards will be issued to an individual in person only;

To be eligible to receive a card, the resident must be over 18 years of age.

Following the February 2019 Monsoon Flood disaster, the Winton Shire Council was provided with Commonwealth Category D – Exceptional Circumstances funding to the value of $1m. From this funding, the North-West Queensland Flood Disaster Carcass Disposal Strategic Master Plan was developed, and Council administered payments of $5,000 per property to assist with carcass disposals. A total of $685,000 was paid to eligible landowners within the Winton Shire. This left a balance of $315,000 to be used on priorities deemed most urgent to Council associated with the event.

After much consideration, Council decided to use the balance of the funding on purchasing and distributing pre-loaded Winton ‘Buy Local’ gift cards (1,000 cards @ $300 plus costs) for community members within the shire. Following this flood event, Council considered our local businesses were greatly disadvantaged, even though they suffered minimal flood damage, the town was isolated, and the flow of visitors stopped. Compensation was not available to offset this financial hardship so the Winton ‘Buy Local’ gift card was considered the best option to support our community and local businesses.

Each Winton ‘Buy Local’ Gift Card will be pre-loaded with $300 and shall be valid for a period of 12 months from 15 October 2019.
