The Window A monthly newsletter published for the parish and friends of Christ Episcopal Church of Bowling Green, Kentucky
April 2017
Dear Friends,
The only constant in life is change. Anyone who has lived long enough to
become self-aware knows this well-worn axiom to be true. As children, we see
it in the flow of the academic year. From naps and snacks in Kindergarten to
Friday test day in first grade, it doesn’t take us long to realize that the things
around us are always changing. In seminary, I learned a word for those
moments of change, they are liminal places.
Liminal comes to us from Latin, and it is the word for threshold. Through
every threshold, there is change. Sometimes, those liminal spaces are long
lasting: four years of college, nine months of pregnancy, or two years of
interim, for example. Other times, the change happens faster than we are
prepared for. No matter how, when, or why, change is difficult.
I’ve experienced this first hand over the past several months. From accepting a call and announcing my
departure to selling a house, buying a house and starting a new job, my family and I have spent the better part
of the last six months in a liminal space. We are grateful for St. Paul’s and Christ Church, two wonderful faith
communities, who have prayed and loved us through this season of change.
Even as things settle in, change is still afoot. As many of you have heard by now, Terry DeHaven will retire
from her role as Parish Accountant on April 12. I’ve not had a long relationship with Terry, but I know that
she will be missed around the office. She may be soft-spoken, but Terry is a person who cares deeply about
her work and the people of Christ Church. I wish her the best as she and her husband enjoy this new season of
travel. Terry’s job will be rolled into the work of Heath, our Parish Administrator, who will off load the
communications portion of his job to a soon-to-be hired Director of Communications.
Looking further ahead, the aptly named Transition Team, which has helped me settle at CEC, is helping me to
develop a series of Community Conversations designed to help us discern where God is calling us to follow.
Look for more information and an invitation to sign up soon. All that, and the search of an Associate Rector
and Chaplain to WKU is heating up as well. Interviews have begun, discernment is ongoing, and your prayers
are invited.
The only constant in life is change. This season of transition will likely never end, but it is in these liminal
spaces that God meets us. Standing at the threshold of something new, God is standing just on the other side
of the door, inviting us to trust, and to step forward in faith into the ongoing
unveiling of the Kingdom.
Grace and Peace,
1 Durchgang in Hestercombe Gardens by Sarah CC 2.0
From The Rector
From The Senior Warden — Laura Cohron
As we continue through the season of Lent, it was nice to take a
break in early March to formally welcome Father Steve to Christ
Church at his Celebration of New Ministry Service. The service and
reception were wonderful, and the sermon by Father Keith from St.
Paul’s Church of Foley, Alabama, was energizing and memorable!
Thank you so much to the many, many folks who helped to plan this
event.
Holy Week is on the near horizon and will be the main focus of our
worship in April. You also will begin to hear about community
conversations which will be held in May for all interested attendees
of Christ Church. Father Steve is interested to meet with us in
smaller groups and listen to our hopes and dreams for the future of
Christ Church. Be looking for more information about how to sign
up in April for one of these conversations. They will be great
opportunities to share your thoughts and listen to others’ ideas.
Happy Spring! Laura, far right, with her husband, Van,
and their daughters, Katie and Sarah.
In the midst of our Lenten reflection and anticipation of Holy
Week, we want to look ahead to the future of Christ Church.
Join Father Steve and the Vestry during May as we engage in
a process of strategic discernment. In small group settings,
everyone will have the chance to offer their input on what is
working, what could use some sprucing up, and new areas of
ministry that we haven’t even begun to explore.
A number of meeting sites and times in May are being
arranged to allow every member of the church to get involved.
Registration will be available online and on Sunday mornings.
Be on the lookout for additional details in early April.
Your input is vital as we seek to listen for the Spirit’s call,
looking for where God would have us go over these first few
years of our life together.
Blessings.
The Rector Transition Team
Community Conversations
From The Junior Warden — John Parker This month I’m writing about infrastructure in Peru, rather at Christ Episcopal Church.
Specifically, I’m writing about the remote village of Santo Thomas located in northeast
Peru on the Orosa River, a tributary of the Amazon. This village has no potable water.
As they have for generations, villagers — often children — walk to the river and bring
water back in buckets. Drinking untreated water is a major source of disease and death
among young children.
We have an opportunity to help the residents of Santo Thomas and nearby communities
by installing a sustainable water purification system in a new health clinic there, and
training the villagers in sanitation and the importance of using only treated water for drinking.
This will not be a quick visit into Santo Thomas just to install the treatment system and hope that it works for a
long time. We will train local operators on its operation and maintenance, leave them spare parts, and follow-
up with them.
Christ Church’s eight-member team will soon begin receiving a 5-day training at the Living Waters for the
World training center in Mississippi. Some team members will be trained in how to establish a sustainable
covenant relationship with the village. Others will be trained in how to train the local people in the importance
and practice of water sanitation. A third group will be trained on installing the purification system under a
myriad of conditions, and training local people on using and keeping it running.
A couple of members of our team will travel to the site in Peru in the fall to begin establishing the covenant
relationship, to reconnoiter our needs there, and to ensure the power and infrastructure there will be ready for
the full team to go in January, 2018.
You may recall that none of our church’s many outreach ministries are funded through the operating budget.
Instead, all of them, e.g., Room in the Inn, the Wednesday Lunch program, HELP Ministry, etc. must raise
their own funding. That is the case with this Living Waters mission trip.
We estimate our budget needs to be $45,000 for our group. Mission members will provide some of this
money, but we are soliciting your help. We invite you to place loose change in the water jugs in Surface Hall
in front of the water system. You may also donate airline miles or points for team members’ travel to Peru.
Monetary donations may be made on-line on the church website or by check made out to the church with
“water mission” noted on the memo line, and placed in the collection plate or sent to the church office.
We are planning a crawfish/shrimp boil for Saturday, May 20, to include a silent auction. We will begin
selling tickets in April.

(April 13) until the 7:00am Good Friday service (April 14). During this period, we offer one-hour increments
to watch and pray.
You may sign up to watch and pray or to serve as security so those praying will have someone else in the
building with them at all times. Both these ministries are important.
A sign-up sheet is located on the Gathering Area bulletin board. Time slots are still available.
Easter Sunday is April 16. Offerings are requested to buy flowers and other items to decorate the church and
to help with the special music expense and extra musicians we have at Easter. Any amount, large or small,
would be appropriate. All donors’ names and those they remember will be printed in the Easter Vigil and
Sunday bulletins.
Please submit your information and donation by Sunday, April 9. Please return your check payable to Christ
Episcopal Church and memo “Easter Flowers and Music.” You may drop it in Heath’s staff mailbox or mail it

School (9:30-9:45am), the children will hunt for Easter eggs on the
grounds of Christ Church. All children through 5th grade are invited to
attend! Please bring your own basket. This year, the eggs will be empty
and children can report to a table in Surface Hall to get an Easter goody
bag. This will help evenly distribute the goodies age appropriately.
Find the Alleluia! During Lent, the children’s ministry decorated an Alleluia banner
and “buried it.” During Sunday School on Easter Sunday, the youth
will go on a scavenger hunt to find the Alleluia!
Flowering the Cross Children, youth, and all parishioners are invited to add fresh flowers to the

The Bread of Angels class works as a group to select topics that enable an in depth
look at topics related to Christianity, to the history of Christianity, to the character
of Christianity in our world, and to topics that we, as a class, decide are of
religious interest. We seek not only knowledge but the application of that
knowledge to our individual understanding of church and of Christian life. While
ours is not a Bible class, per se, it is a class that delves deeply into Biblical history
and its related modern day concerns and issues. The Bread of Angels Class is
delighted to announce that Mike Harper of Christ Episcopal Church will be leading
a series of discussions on the writers and the origin of the synoptic gospels and
how the literalism of those gospels might be seen in modern day Christianity.
Conversations with Scripture Class — Cates Lounge — Each Sunday except first Sunday of the month.
Remember Jesus? St. Augustine holds that our memory is well thought of as a vast treasury. We do well also to
think of Jesus as an immense treasure capable of overflowing even such a vast place. We gather to see how Jesus
is remembered in the Gospel of Matthew. Join us as we listen to one another and add our own memories of how
Jesus serves as an inexhaustible source of love, power, and good tidings.

Be still and know that I am God. (Psalm 46:10)
Do you sometimes feel the noise of the world puts you on overload? Do
you ever seek a few quiet moments just to sit in silence so you can “hear”
what is really important? If so, then we may be the group for you.
Come join us in the Chapel on Tuesdays at 12:15pm. For the next few
months during our reflection time, we will be turning to Richard Rohr’s
Book, “The Naked Now: Learning to See as the Mystics See.”

Room In The Inn News
Room in the Inn has officially ended the 2016-17 season and would like to thank all volunteers for their time and help in this ministry. Housing for guests was at full capacity or above at Christ Church this year. We served a lot of new faces with a safe place to lay their head, feed their body and hopefully their souls. We would like to have more people willing to serve as Inn Keepers in this ministry. In order to house women or children there must be a female Inn Keeper. If we could recruit two more females and males it would help tremendously. Please prayerfully consider volunteering. If you have questions or need more information, please contact Digby or Belinda Palmer ([email protected]).
Living Waters For The World
Mission Trip 2018
Living Waters for the World is a “global
outreach ministry...that trains and equips
mission teams to share the gift of clean
water treatment systems with communities
in need. The water treatment systems and
related educational programs fill a critical
niche in the world water crisis—helping
communities with available but
contaminated water to obtain a clean water
supply.”
The CEC LWW mission team is planning
to travel to Peru in January of 2018 to
install a water system (that can be seen in
Surface Hall). We need lots of support in
order to make this goal a reality!
Here are ways you can support the
mission team’s efforts—
Pray for the mission team (Initiating
Partners) and the people of Santo Thomas
(Operating Partner).
Support the trip financially by donating by
check in the offering plate or online and having
your name added to a water droplet in Surface
Hall.
Help fill the 5 gallon water bottle in Surface
Hall with coins. We’re halfway there!
Add coins to the water bottles in the Sunday
School offering collection and around the
church.
Attend the Crawfish/Shrimp Boil on May 20
and/or donate a silent auction item. Contact
Belinda Palmer ([email protected]) for more
details.
