Background

Econocom is a European digital services group, providing a wide range of ITC services for distribution, administrative and financial management to help businesses manage their projects. In September 2013, Econocom finalised its acquisition of Osiatis, a major player in infrastructure services and a specialist in related applications. The acquisition created a new player in the market and raised the standards in the digital services market. The company has a presence in 20 countries, has 8,300 employees and revenue of 2 billion euros, of which 650 million is in services.

Challenges

For almost two years, cloud computing has been a priority development for IT systems directors across France. According to recent research by Gartner, 76% of French businesses claim to have a private cloud project currently underway. To respond to this new requirement, Econocom has developed VSPEX certified viCUBE - a turnkey virtualisation solution for private clouds. Econocom is collaborating with Eaton on the development of viCUBE in relation to racks, intelligent ePDUs, UPSs as well as Eaton´s power management software called Intelligent Power™. Before joining forces with Eaton Econocom conducted a market survey of the various manufacturers currently operating in this sphere.

Solution

Ultimately, Econocom chose Eaton for a number of reasons. The most important one is the fact that Eaton integration is far more advanced than that of other solution providers, especially in terms of virtualisation.

In addition, the quality and design of Eaton’s RP series racks is also consistent with the image that viCUBE wishes to convey. RP series racks can be supplied with a very large number of accessories, for example cables, mounting and ventilation. Moreover, these racks are fitted from the outset with ready-marked and easily adjustable mounting rails, 75% open perforation doors, double-leaf doors, a pre-installed grounding system and essential accessory kits to provide simplicity and speed of installation.

The technological sophistication of Eaton’s ePDUs, especially in terms of their energy management capability, was also important for Econocom.

Cyril Chiaramella, Econocom’s Head of Partner Relationships, expands: “Eaton’s added-value derives in particular from the quality and finish of its solutions. Sometimes, the difference is in the detail. This applies, for example, to Eaton racks, which are better finished and more visually appealing. This also applies to the fascia and even the ergonomics of their plastic clips....these are all details that ensure the quality of the product, while also saving time during installation.”

Results

Econocom officially launched the viCUBE offering back in February 2013 and since then a number of projects have been completed in businesses of various types and sizes, from three to 5,000 employees. Based on a contractual commitment of 36 or 48 months, viCUBE is sized to fit the current and evolving requirements of any company, no matter how big, and is available at three levels: Entry, Middle and High. In addition, the orchestration phase of the tool, an integral part of viCUBE version 2.0, adds real value. Keen interest in this type of offering is discernible in the market, enabling even the very smallest businesses to have their own cloud system in-house. The CIO can now create an in-house cloud in fee-based mode, and locate administration, management and web hosting wherever needed.

viCUBE was originally developed to support data centres, and now Econocom wants to introduce it to even smaller IT applications at end user environment. The final stage in the development of viCUBE will enable customers to integrate their own virtual desktop infrastructure.

Cyril Chiaramella: “We got together with Eaton based on the idea of trust. It’s a win-win partnership that lives up to both parties’ expectations. The cloud computing market poses complex new problems in the data centre world. Eaton understood where we wanted to go and were able to meet our requests and our expectations.”
