Reflections from the

Head of SchoolDear Friends of Wilson, The 2015-2016 school year was a year to remember at Wilson. From start to finish, we aimed high and together we made a strong impact on our educational program and community.

As a faculty and board, we launched the year with an in-service event featuring Professor Ed Hess, a Strategy Professor for the Darden School of Business at the University of Virginia. Professor Hess is known as a leading edge thinker who specializes in learning cultures and innovation. Among his many compelling points, Professor Hess challenged us to imagine how robotics, sensors, artificial intelligence, and other advanced technologies are disrupting both the world and the nature of the work force. A very fitting speaker for Wilson, Professor Hess’ message aligned well with Wilson’s emphasis on preparing students for success in an ever-changing world.

Consistent with thinking on future-ready skills, our faculty increased its focus on social emotional learning and soft skills, among which include collaboration, self-reflection, listening, creativity, responsible decision-making, and persistence to tackle challenges. Partnering with renowned experts, Tim and Anne Jordan, we implemented the Strong Students, Strong World program at Wilson School. This proactive work with students helps them be at their best in working with peers, claiming their confidence, and in developing leadership skills. It’s a complex world, and our students need to advance with skills that will truly help them to thrive today, and throughout their lives.

Our theme for the year was Make Your Mark a Good One Through Acts of Service. I am so thankful to the Wilson Outreach Workshop (WOW) for sponsoring creative ways for our families to make a difference, such as the collection of new or gently used Halloween costumes for children in need. Whether participating in a schoolwide activity together, or performing for their peers in an assembly presentation, our students had many opportunities to gain a deeper sense of what it means to serve one’s community.

Wilson really is an exceptional school, and a wonderful place for a child to be valued and appreciated. This year,

our population came from thirty-four different zip codes; twenty-eight percent of the students have a parent(s) born outside the United States, representing eighteen countries; thirty-three percent of students are people of color; and Wilson continues to be one of the more socio-economically diverse independent schools in the region.

Thank you for being an important part of a school where students are engaged in a unique and powerful learning program, and cared for in an environment that prepares them for the best possible future.

With gratitude,

Thad Falkner,Head of School

Dear Friends of The Wilson School,

I had the privilege of serving as President of the Board of Trustees of The Wilson School for the 2015-2016 fiscal year and am pleased to share this letter reporting on our activities.

While devising Wilson’s Long-Range Plan over the last few years, the Board has focused on the environment for independent elementary and early childhood education in St. Louis and nationally. We recognize that the costs to provide outstanding education continue to rise, but that we must be innovative in our development and recruiting, and thoughtful in our expenditures in order to continue to make a Wilson education available to our diverse St. Louis community. The Long-Range Plan and Wilson’s annual budget are designed to support this goal.

During the 2015-16 year we assessed actions needed to implement the Long-Range Plan and worked with Thad and his team to allocate key tasks across Board committees and the Administration. The Plan outlined three strategic pillars: Leveraging our Global Competencies, Seeking New Revenue Sources and Establishing Excellence in Marketing. As you may have seen on www.wilsonschool.com and heard on NPR, significant progress was made to advance Wilson’s marketing—so much so that we have seen other organizations adopt similar approaches. Implementation of the Long-Range Plan will continue to be a significant undertaking for the Board for the 2016-17 school year.

Beyond implementation of the Long-Range Plan, throughout the year the Board engaged in ongoing oversight of Wilson’s implementation of mission, budget and finances, development, strategic planning, risk management, and facilities, as well as our Head of School. We also re-established Wilson’s external Advisory Council to capitalize on a wide array of expertise among Wilson’s friends, and through the Board’s Excellence Committee we hosted a Science Night and Art Saturday for our families to enjoy together, among many other activities.

Wilson’s mission of educating students for success in an ever-changing world and its passion for excellence are always front and center. Wilson is an exceptional school and with the engagement of our community of supporters, our superior faculty and staff, our top notch facility and our attention to strategic planning and careful management, I am truly excited about its future. As a parent of three children ages three through 11, I will directly experience the benefit and value of the Wilson education for the next 8.5 years, and my children and family will continue to benefit from the Wilson education well after they have graduated. The Wilson education provides my children their best opportunity to succeed at the next level of school and in their future lives. I am humbled by the foundation that was laid by Wilson friends, faculty and staff over the last 103 years and am pleased to work with all of you to maintain the standard and fulfill the Wilson mission for current and future generations.

Thank you for your amazing support for The Wilson School. And if at any time you would like more information about the work of the Board, please feel free to contact me, any member of the Board, or Thad.

Sincerely,

Jennifer Woods2015-16 Board President
