This image from space shows lights from the Bakken oil field. (and probably a fair amount of natural gas flares as well). There have been numerous stories about the size of oil development in North Dakota. This image certainly shows the scope of the area.

ST. PAUL, Minn. (8/6/2012) —On July 24, the National Drought Mitigation Center announced that 53 percent of the United States was experiencing a moderate to exceptional drought. Drought conditions have severely reduced the supply of hay and other feedstuffs, escalating the demand and driving up prices.

At the July 24 hay auction in Pipestone, Minn., supreme quality alfalfa hay brought a high of $260 per ton, while grass/alfalfa mixed hay brought a high of $200 per ton. Grass hay was slightly lower at $180 per ton.

To prepare for higher prices, livestock owners should consider these tips from University of Minnesota Extension:

Keep in mind that quality forage should be the backbone of the livestock diet. For cattle producers, corn silage, alfalfa or grass haylage, and straw can be added to the diet; however, the drought has affected the supply and price of these feedstuffs as well. For horse owners, forage (in the form of hay or pasture) should comprise a minimum of two-thirds of their diet. Few forage alternatives exist for horses.

If purchasing drought-stressed forage (hay products or corn silage), the forage

should be tested for nitrates. Nitrates can accumulate in stems and stalks of drought-stressed plants. Once livestock consume the forage, nitrates turn into nitrites, which bind to red blood cells, preventing the cells from carrying oxygen to tissues. Two cases of nitrate toxicity have recently been reported in Wisconsin cattle herds. On a positive note, drought-affected alfalfa usually has a higher leaf/stem ration, resulting in better quality.

If possible, consider adding hay storage to reduce the effects of seasonal price fluctuations. Hay is usually more

affordable when purchased during the growing season compared to the winter months.

If purchasing hay, buy it early. Waiting for later cuttings (which are usually higher in quality) puts livestock owners at risks of limited late-season supplies and higher prices. Having a good working relationship with a hay supplier can help ensure a consistent and reliable source of hay products and/or corn silage.

Plan in advance. Budget for the price increases in feedstuffs and re-evaluate how many livestock you can afford to feed. Unfortunately, increases in feedstuffs are not always balanced by higher prices for livestock products.

Finally, try and keep the hay type (grass or alfalfa) or forage product consistent in the diet or ration. Constantly changing hay types can lead to health problems, especially with horses, and can affect production outcomes in cattle.

Krishona Martinson is a crops educator and an equine specialist with University of Minnesota Extension.

Williston Village RV Resort to Open Late AugustA veteran developer with North Dakota origins has returned to his home state to help ease the housing crisis.

Vern Haugen and his partners are building the Williston area’s largest RV Park and an apartment building in the Harvest Hills subdivision.

Construction crews are working as fast as they can to get the Williston Village RV Resort open before September 1, 2012 – when a new Williston ordinance takes effect that bans living in RV’s or campers within the city limits. The Williston Village will provide parking space with no services in late August – it will have 180 lots with full services beginning September 3, 2012.

The resort will have over 700 lots at completion. It will also have a commercial laundry facility and large shower facility. Those buildings are expected to open in October.

The Williston Village is located in the Bakken Industrial Park, about 1.5 miles north of Williston. The resort’s 30 by 70 foot lots will be leased monthly for $795 plus an initial $300 deposit for electricity. Tenants may also subscribe to Wi-Fi. Lots can be reserved by calling 701-580-2287 or logging onto www.willistonvillagervresort.com. WED

Dickinson and three other cities are getting money for affordable housing for law officers and others.

The state attorney general’s office is directing $3 million from North Dakota’s share of a multistate lawsuit settlement with U.S. mortgage lenders to subsidize housing for law officers in the state’s booming oil patch, where housing is in short supply.

Gov. Jack Dalrymple says $744,000 is going toward a Dickinson apartment complex. The $3.5 million project also is getting money from Marathon Oil through the state Housing Incentive Fund.

The AP reports that Belfield, Stanley and Watford City are getting lesser

amounts through the Law Enforcement Pilot program in its first round. The remaining $1.1 million will be distributed in a second round that will focus on northwestern cities such as Williston. AP

Many parents are busy these days juggling everything from work, car pools, soccer practice, and cooking dinner. But a hectic schedule doesn’t have to mean poor food choices. Here are a few time-saving tricks to make mealtime easier and nutritious for the whole family.

Create a family calendar Whether you prefer the old fashioned calendar posted on the refrigerator or smartphone apps that sync your schedules, a key to reducing stress is to find an organizational system that works for you. By tracking everyone’s daily activities in a central place, you are less likely to forget any important work or family events and minimize the chance of double bookings.

Shop for groceries on a schedule Schedule a regular time each week for grocery shopping. Create a list so you stay focused when you shop, helping to save time and money. Post the list in the kitchen where the whole family can see it and everyone can easily add in a variety of their favorite items as soon as you run out.

Make a meal in a minute Ready-to-go meals are a smart choice for working parents. For example, family-owned pasta company Barilla offers

microwaveable meals made from 100 percent natural ingredients. These palate-pleasing favorites like Mezze Penne with Tomato and Basil Sauce or Whole Grain Fusilli with Vegetable Marinara Sauce

don’t require refrigeration, so they can be easily stored in the kitchen pantry or a desk drawer for lunch at work. Better yet, they are ready in just 60 seconds in the microwave so you can have a wholesome lunch or dinner - no cooking required.

Whole family menu planning Ask everyone in the family - especially the kids - to plan a balanced dinner menu

for one night of the week. Encourage them to think of creative themes like Italian night. Menu planning eliminates the last-minute scramble for something to eat, saves money on takeout and ensures healthier meals.

It doesn’t have to be a daunting task to maintain a wholesome lifestyle for the family. If everyone chips in, it can be easy and fun. ARA

Home & Garden

Backyards have always been places where families can get away without actually going away. Whether it’s adding an outdoor kitchen or replacing your old picnic table with a truly impressive dining set, you can expand your living area by focusing on what’s outside the home.

Realizing the value of spending time outside in a comfortable and attractive setting - and that money spent on an outdoor space can go even further as opposed to a new addition to your home.

Plan with a purpose Before you determine the layout, consider how you will use the space to create memories. Do you like to cook and entertain friends? Are you seeking a private escape to spend more time with family?

Start with the top item on your wish list - an organic garden or gorgeous view - and create a plan to design around it. To maintain the flow from indoors out, use natural materials for

decking or patio space that complement the outdoors.

Add backyard flavor Heat up your backyard retreat by adding a kitchen to create tasty family dinners outside. Depending on the size of your space, a kitchen may include a variety of appliances and offer many seating options.

Create privacy and shade To create the most comfortable space on hot summer days, pergolas and arbors provide shade. As more homeowners are looking for low-maintenance products, build with natural materials that are easy to use and can stand the test of time.

Bring indoors out Add the finishing touches to your outdoor retreat by truly bringing the indoors outside. For a simple touch, buy three different size pots in the same style and plant a mix of flowers in each. Outdoor lighting is really hot right now - not just wrapping lights around trees.

Having a well-maintained outdoor living space and garden shows confidence to potential buyers. ARA

15Food/Dining

What do time and money have in common? They’re worth a lot, and we could always use more of each. Getting a healthy meal on the table may seem impossible. Smart planning and shopping can make it easier on any budget. Consider these five tips to plan and prepare quick, nutritious and affordable meals:

1. Plan ahead: Studies show one-third of Americans decide what to make for dinner at the last minute, which can lead you to choose less-than-healthy foods. Plan your meals ahead of time and go to the supermarket with a list.

2. Go online to find quick recipes: Search for recipes that use ingredients that are affordable and easy to prepare.

3. Keep frequently used ingredients in your pantry: Canned tomatoes, beans, tuna and other foods can be stored in the pantry until you’re ready.

4. Look for meals that can be prepared in advance: Cook ahead on days when you have time or double-up on recipes of your favorite soups and sauces; freeze half to use on one of those especially time-crunched weeknights.

5. Explore protein alternatives: Experiment with non-meat proteins, such as beans, seafood and soy-based foods and try “no cook” meals like salads. Combining seasonal fresh produce in a green salad with affordable protein-alternatives, including canned beans and tuna, helps stretch the food budget and add critical nutrients.

Use these tips to help your family get the most nutrition from every meal by making smart choices from every food group. This Confetti Picnic Salad is a healthy side dish that’s easy to make ahead of time and delicious year-round. With a combination of colorful veggies, one serving gives you the health-promoting benefits of one cup of nutrient-rich vegetables. ARA

Confetti Picnic SaladIngredients: 1 can (15 1/4 ounces) corn, drained 1 can (15 ounces) chickpeas (garbanzos), drained and rinsed 1 can (14 1/2 ounces) cut green beans, drained 2 cups (1 pint basket) grape or cherry tomatoes, halved 1 cup bagged, matchstick-cut carrots 1/2 cup bottled, reduced-fat Italian dressing

3 large hard-cooked eggs, peeled Preparation time: Approximately 15 minutes. Cook time: Approximately 30 minutes. Directions: Place corn, chickpeas, green beans, tomatoes and carrots in a large bowl. Add dressing and toss until well coated. Cover and refrigerate at least 30 minutes. Separate egg yolks and whites and chop coarsely. Add egg whites to salad and toss to blend. Place salad in a serving bowl and crumble egg yolks over top of salad. Serve cold. Makes eight servings.

Top National Parks For FamiliesEach year, hundreds of millions of people visit the 397 destinations that comprise the country’s National Park System. Summer is the ideal time to explore many of these parks, as activities in the parks are in full swing. Here are four national parks that are worth putting on your family’s life list.

Yellowstone National Park Spanning parts of Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho, Yellowstone National Park tops the list. Yellowstone was the first national park, and it is the eighth-largest national park in the United States. It is home to the most geologically active lands on the planet. The geysers and bubbling hot springs are the park’s signature features. But the wildlife is famous, too. Yellowstone is one of the country’s most-visited parks as well. To avoid the crowds, enter the park early in the morning, or better yet, stay the night in the park for sunset views that day-trippers rarely see.

Great Smoky Mountains National Park Covering more than a half a million acres, Great Smoky Mountains National Park in North Carolina and Tennessee is the most-visited national park in the country. This park makes the list because it provides easy access to nature and is within a day’s drive of nearly a third of the U.S. population. The park

has nearly 800 miles of hiking trails and 16 mountain peaks higher than 6,000 feet. Families will see plenty of diverse wildlife, such as black bears, elk and a diverse collection of fauna and flora.

Acadia National Park Acadia National Park near Bar Harbor,

Maine, delivers the full outdoor experience. It was the first national park created east of the Mississippi, and it is best known for its boulder-lined coast and former carriage-path trails that wind through the forest. Go hiking or trail running on Cadillac Mountain and enjoy the beautiful views and fresh mountain air. Also, explore the shores and islands with the family by kayak or canoe. Be sure to snag some of the area’s famous lobsters and blueberries.

Grand Canyon National Park Grand Canyon National Park, also jokingly known as the eighth wonder of the world, brings in more than 5 million visitors each year. Hiking below the canyon rim or rafting a section of the Colorado River will ensure the whole family experiences more than just a panoramic view from the top. If you are really adventurous, you can plan a mule-trek into (and out of) the canyon, as you ascend almost 4,500 vertical feet. ARA

Dickinson State University alumnus and 15-time NAIA All-American Ramon Miller secured the team gold medal as he ran anchor leg for the Bahamian men’s 4x400 relay team.

Ramon Miller crossed the finish line with his head held high knowing that

what he had just done with his other three running mates was significant. Not only did they win the Gold for the 4x400 meter relay, they did it in record time of 2:56.72. And until that moment last Friday for the last 28 years the United States team had won every 4x400 in the Olympics.

Miller a former Dickinson State University student and runner, was honored in the Bahamas, where him and his fellow track mates hail. Miller’s college track coach Pete Stanton shared that he had been

in contact with Miller after the win. Miller also represented the Bahamas in both the 200-meter and 400-meter dash during the 2012 London Summer Olympic Games.

“I’m just incredibly excited for Ramon. I don’t think you could have scripted this

any better for him and his country,” said Pete Stanton, head track and field coach at DSU. “Ramon is a quality individual and has represented himself, his family, his country, and our university to the best of his abilities. This was definitely a landmark day for Ramon, the Bahamas and Dickinson State University.”

Wacky NewsMotorists in Germany were held up by an unexpected delay this week when thousands of bottles of beer were left scattered along a motorway after a lorry shed its load. Huge piles of broken glass blocked the autobahn near Schwarzach in Bavaria following the incident. A team of firefighters armed with shovels and brushes assisted in clearing up the shattered bottles. The accidental damage follows a similar incident in the German town of Wernigerode last week, when a lorry spilled 25 tons of beer crates following a crash.

The ensemble entertained world record officials with an interpretation of Aloha Mahalo A Hui Ho, a song written by Hawaiian-born former sumo wrestler Konishiki. My captors continue to taunt me with bizarre little dangling objects. They dine lavishly on fresh meat, while I am forced to eat dry cereal. The only thing that keeps me going is the hope of escape, and the mild satisfaction I get from ruining the occasional piece of furniture. Tomorrow I may eat another house plant. The dog is routinely released and seems more than happy to return. He is obviously a half-wit.

This Week in HistoryThis week in 1909, the first race is held at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, now the home of the world’s most famous motor racing competition, the Indianapolis 500. Since 1911, the Indianapolis 500 has been held every year, with the exception of 1917-18 and 1942-45, when the U.S. was involved in the world wars. With an average crowd of 400,000, the Indy 500 is the best-attended event in U.S. sports. In 1936, asphalt was used to cover the rougher parts of the track, and by 1941 most of the track was paved. The last of the speedway’s original bricks were covered in 1961, except for a three-foot line of bricks left exposed at the start-finish line as a nostalgic reminder of the track’s history.

ARIES (Mar. 21- April 20)The focus seems to be on fun and adventure. Enjoy life and continue to be playful even though you may have to attend to some serious business. Don’t get mad midweek if someone becomes very stubborn. The more you argue, the worse they’ll get. Wait a day or so and you may find they’ve changed their mind. If you’re toying with dating some-one you fancy, ask him or her out at Friday’s New Moon. You could find that you connect perfectly.TAURUS (Apr. 21- May 21)You may notice powerful tension developing in one relationship, with the feeling that something is about to explode. Midweek, when Venus opposes Pluto and squares Uranus, could be when it all starts. You could get mad, but that probably won’t help. Current influences suggest that this could be a romantic or work-related matter. Later, the New Moon in Leo is helpful for starting projects around the home. Whether you want to redecorate, remodel, or buy or sell property, go for it.GEMINI (May 22-June 21)Take it easy, especially if financial issues come to a head this week. You might find yourself in a monetary bind, which could cause some stress. However, the issue may get resolved a day or so later, so don’t panic. Avoid dates midweek if you can. The New Moon in your communication zone is perfect for buying a new computer or other gadget, or for launching a website or blog. It’s also helpful for promoting yourself in whatever way seems appropriate.CANCER (June 22-July 22)Relationships may get intense and quite passionate, but not necessarily in a healthy way. There may be some darker emotions involved, such as domination and obsession. Don’t rock the boat - stay cool. Mars conjuncts Saturn midweek, which may cause a deadlock in a family situation at home. Be patient. It should sort itself out. The New Moon in Leo can be used to kick-start your finances by working out your budget. Make sure you allow for the fun things, too.

LEO (July 23-Aug 22)If you’ve been feeling stressed for any reason, slow down. Watch out for those heavy emotions that might be taking a toll on you. Midweek may be tricky as you could find it hard to get your message across to someone - perhaps he or she doesn’t want to hear it. Give the person time to come around. The New Moon in your sign is the nicest one of the year for you. Use it to get started on your best and brightest goals.VIRGO (Aug. 23 -Sept. 23)You may not see eye to eye with your friends, especially if there has been some resentment building lately. If you want to stay on good terms, try and talk things over. You may have more luck in a few days, when things have calmed down a bit. Midweek could bring a financial deadlock of some kind. Once again, be patient and the issue will melt away. The New Moon in your spiritual zone may be helpful for learning meditation or another spiritual discipline.LIBRA (Sept. 24 -Oct. 23)Any problems you face this week may have to do with a conflict between career and responsibilities to home and family. On top of that, you could be in a very stubborn mood and unwilling to compromise. If you make a really big fuss, you might make things worse. See how you feel later in the week since you may change your mind. It’s time to upgrade your social life, too. The New Moon in Leo means it’s time to move in new circles.SCORPIO (Oct. 24 - Nov. 22)You may be in the spotlight more than usual, but you seem to love the extra attention. However, your mood may darken midweek when you could find yourself at loggerheads with someone. It could be a question of belief - and you’re sticking to your guns. But if you’re too stubborn, you could spoil a good relationship, so mind how you go. The New Moon in your career zone is helpful for making a fresh start with a project or goal. You might see results more quickly.

SAGITTARIUS(Nov.23-Dec. 21)If you’re in a traveling mood, this is a good time to take off and have some fun. Be careful midweek because you might have issues around money. They seem temporary, but they could be enough to worry you for a short time. Friends could be stubborn concerning your plans and seem very difficult to get along with. They should be in a better mood by the end of the week. The New Moon helps love affairs and creative ventures take off.CAPRICORN (Dec 22.- Jan. 20)You could be in a bind as a relationship issue makes things awkward. Some powerful emotions could be involved that aren’t pretty. Also, you might feel very frustrated about a career issue, especially as an obstacle seems to stop you in your tracks. Ride the waves and you could be surprised when everything turns out just fine. The New Moon in Leo is helpful if you want to get a mortgage or loan. It means you’ll start out on the right foot.AQUARIUS (Jan. 21 -Feb. 19)Relationships seem to be helping you put things in perspective while considering your options. There’s a New Moon this week, which may be just the chance you need to make a fresh start. Whether you want a deeper commitment, new relationship, or space to be yourself, this is the time to go for it. Midweek could bring up health issues, especially if you’ve been living on your nerves recently. It might be time to take a break if you can.PISCES (Feb. 20-Mar. 20)The path of true love never did run smooth, and this week that saying seems applicable. Try not to worry if you’re in a romantic nosedive. You might feel intense, but a day or so is all it takes for this to shift. Don’t make things worse by making a scene. On the other hand, the New Moon in Leo is helpful for making a fresh start with your health. The weekend is a good time to begin a new exercise routine or diet.

Agriculture Commissioner Doug Goehring says North Dakota home and property owners should check recently purchased nursery stock for Japanese beetle infestation.

“If you have bought shrubs, trees or flowers this year, please inspect the plants carefully and remove and kill any Japanese beetles you find,” Goehring said. “We do not believe this pest has become established yet in North Dakota, and we don’t want it to become a permanent resident.”

Goehring said more information on the Japanese beetle and methods for controlling it are found on the University of Minnesota Extension website, www.extension.umn.edu/. He said homeowners can also contact their nursery dealer or their county extension agent for more information.

Last week, a Japanese beetle found in Grand Forks was positively identified by the NDSU Extension Plant Pest Diagnostic Laboratory. Later, more specimens were found in traps in West Fargo.

Goehring said the source of the beetles

is a Minnesota nursery supplier.“The North Dakota Department of Agriculture (NDDA) is working with the supplier which has agreed to take the necessary steps to ensure that no more of these insects are coming to North Dakota,” Goehring said. “The supplier is also working with their growers to deal with the pest at the source before the plants are sent for distribution.”

Goehring said NDDA is placing an additional 100 Japanese beetle traps in and near nurseries that have purchased stock from the supplier. The department currently has about 80 traps set out.

The beetle is native to Japan and found in the U.S. in 1916. It is now found in nearly every state east of the Mississippi River, as well as Minnesota, South Dakota and Montana. The only previous finding in North Dakota was in 2001 in Burleigh County.

Although the Japanese beetle is not a regulated pest, it is a serious pest of ornamental plants. The insects defoliate a broad range of plants, including corn, soybeans, ornamentals, trees, and shrubs especially roses and lindens.
