With cold weather and the possibility of blizzards upon us, this was good news for WSC. The need for a large generator was established in spring 2011 when power to Williston and the surrounding areas was out for about four days. With more than 200 individuals living on-campus at the time and numerous others in the area who were affected by the power outages, WSC President Dr. Raymond Nadolny started diligently pursuing the possibility of purchasing emergency generators for the college. At the time of the 2011 power outage, the weather was warm enough that there was no danger of anyone freezing from extreme cold. However, Nadolny was concerned about what would happen if this type of outage occurred when temperatures were below freezing. With no money in the college’s general budget to pay for the $400,000 project, Nadolny approached the State Board of Higher Education to request approval to install a 500 KW generator. The request then went to the ND State Legislature which met in special session in November 2011, to request funding approval. The board and the legislature agreed with his assessment of the situation and approved the project. “There is no way we could have done this without that allocation from the state,” said WSC Vice President for Business Services James Foertsch. The generator holds 5,000 gallons of diesel and will provide power and heat to Stevens Hall, the main building on campus, which also includes the college’s cafeteria. It is also possible that if another power outage on this scale happened, the college could be a potential emergency shelter for the community. “With Williston growing into a large community, having this type of support and back-up is absolutely critical, not just for the college, but also for the community,” Nadolny stated. With all the challenges of living in an area impacted by the oil boom, Nadolny is thankful that the generator was able to be approved, received and installed in a fairly short amount of time. “We all know the work it takes to make things happen in this area which is so busy and overwhelmed, but these services are truly critical for us to continue to move forward. WSC is currently revamping its emergency preparedness plans to include future use of the new generator. 701-577-1111 www.driveryan.com We Buy Gold And Silver Dakota Square Mall Minot The Gold Shop HIGHEST PRICES P AID! WILLISTON, N.D. - Williston State College is pleased to announce that the purchase and installation of an emergency generator has been completed.

“We all know the work it takes to make things happen in this area which is so busy and overwhelmed, but these services are truly critical for us to continue to move forward.

WSC is currently revamping its emergency preparedness plans to include future use of the new generator.

The History of St. Valentine’s DayOn February 14 around the year 278 A.D., Valentine, a holy priest in Rome in the days of Emperor Claudius II, was executed.

Under the rule of Claudius the Cruel, Rome was involved in many unpopular and bloody campaigns. The emperor had to maintain a strong army, but was having a difficult time getting soldiers to join his military leagues. Claudius believed that Roman men were unwilling to join the army because of their strong attachment to their wives and families.

To get rid of the problem, Claudius banned all marriages and engagements in Rome. Valentine, realizing the injustice of the decree, defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret.

When Valentine’s actions were discovered, Claudius ordered that he be put to death. Valentine was arrested and dragged before the Prefect of Rome, who condemned him to be beaten to death with clubs and to have his head cut off. The sentence was carried out on February 14, on or about the year 270.

Legend also has it that while in jail, St. Valentine left a farewell note for the jailer’s daughter, who had become his friend, and signed it “From Your Valentine.”

For his great service, Valentine was named a saint after his death.

In truth, the exact origins and identity of St. Valentine are unclear. According to the Catholic Encyclopedia, “At least three different Saint Valentines, all of them martyrs, are mentioned in the early martyrologies under the date

of 14 February.” One was a priest in Rome, the second one was a bishop of Interamna (now Terni, Italy) and the third St. Valentine was a martyr in the Roman province of Africa.

Legends vary on how the martyr’s name became connected with romance. The date of his death may have become mingled with the Feast of Lupercalia, a pagan festival of love. On these occasions, the names of young women were placed in a box, from which they were drawn by the men as chance directed. In 496 AD, Pope Gelasius decided to put an end to the Feast of Lupercalia, and he declared that February 14 be celebrated as St Valentine’s Day.

Gradually, February 14 became a date for exchanging love messages, poems and simple gifts such as flowers.

Williston, ND (January 31, 2013) - The final Christmas finance numbers are in for The Salvation Army in Williston, ND. Seeing a large increase in the various services that The Salvation Army provides Captain Joshua Stansbury set quite a lofty goal for the 2012 Christmas fund-raising campaign. “In 2011 we surpassed our overall Christmas goal by $120,000 therefore I figured in that increase plus a small percentage more for our 2012-2013 budget.” A goal unfortunately that was not met. Stansbury stated that in Mail-appeal (letters sent to regular donors and businesses) the non-profit agency accomplished 105% of the budgeted total, however the red kettles did not see the same success, falling $35,000 short of the red kettle goal. With the increase in mail appeal efforts the agency sits just $15,000 short of their overall $250,000 Christmas goal. “Everyone in this town is so busy and often times our volunteer efforts feel the effect, it is hard to get adequate volunteers for the

various opportunities we have and kettles is no exception. We are greatly appreciative to the various groups that volunteered and the individuals and families, however we still struggled to consistently have every red kettle site filled.” Stansbury even mentioned that this year they had a few paid positions available but very few people wanted to work for the rate they were offering.

When asked where the agency goes from here Captain Joshua stated: “We continue on with life as normal, we don’t need to cancel

any programs, we may need to tighten up on some criteria for services but regardless of our income the need is still great. The need will always surpass the income and that is where our faith comes in. I praise the Lord for the income He did bless us with and I trust that we have what God wants us to have and as we need more He will provide.” Stansbury mentioned they may look this year at other fundraising events throughout the year to help supplement the difference, including contacting companies for daily matches during the Christmas Fundraising season. Stansbury is consistently encouraged by the community’s support. There are still ways to help with the Christmas deficit one is by dropping off a donation at the church/main office located 15 Main St and earmarking it Red Kettles, Mailing donations to PO BOX 420, Online at SalvationArmyNorth.org/Williston click the donate tab, or for an immediate $10 donation Texting “BOOM” to 80888.

This week I thought it would be good to dis-cuss dating, particularly what you should and should not do. I hope you’re ready with a note-pad and pen; you might want to take notes!

We’ll start with the DO’s. • Do put effort into planning a date. Even if you’re just going to a baseball game or coffee shop, make it memorable.

• Do dress up once in a while for a nice dinner or night on the town. A tie will not kill you.

• Do bring her flowers every once in a while. And while we’re on this subject, take the time to find out what her favorite flower is.

• Do hold her hand in public. I’m not saying you have to go all PDA and make out with her and gross people out, but show some affec-tion.

• Do pay for dinner, breakfast, lunch, or for popcorn and soda at the movie theater. If she offers to split it, smile and say, “It’s my job.”

• Do split the check sometimes, and do let HER pay for something every now and then. It makes her feel independent.

• Focus on her. You’re with an amazing, beau-tiful woman.

• COMPLIMENT HER.

• Open all doors for her. Even if she beats you to it, insist that she goes first. Chivalry isn’t dead, you know.

Now, when we talk about the DON’T’SI want you to get out your highlighter or sharp-ie and pay attention! This stuff is important!

• Don’t talk about yourself to the point where she could recite your life story to all her friends.

• Don’t assume she is going to be ready to go on time. Be early, because she’ll be late.

• Don’t talk smack about her family or friends.

• Don’t compare her to another girl you dated once upon a time.

• Don’t show up at her house and honk your horn for her to come outside. Walk to the door and ring the doorbell.

• Don’t take calls or texts from people while on a date, unless it’s an emergency.

• Don’t talk to her like you’re better than her. It’s ok to brag about yourself, but keep the ego in line.

• Don’t assume that once your date is over you’re going to go back to your house and get frisky. Be classy.

So, what did we learn today? Dating has a lot of rules. Some of them are common sense. If a woman means a lot to you, do your best to be your best every time you see her. By making her your number one priority while on a date, you show that you are a mature, sensitive man. And let me tell you, women love that.

And with that, I bid you good luck! Until then, send your comments or questions to [email protected]. I look for-ward to hearing your thoughts!

Cheers!

Courtney

Heavy Industrial Lots For SaleNEW ORLEANS — From blowout to blackout to shootout, Joe Flacco and the Baltimore Ravens had just enough power to survive one of the most electric Super Bowls ever.

The outage flipped a switch for the San Francisco 49ers, but the Ravens used a last-gasp defensive

stand to hold on Sunday night, 34-31.

A m e r i c a ’ s b i g g e s t s p o r t i n g e v e n t came to a h a l f - h o u r standstill in

the third quarter when most of the Superdome lights and the scoreboards went dark. By then, the Ravens had a 22-point lead.

Everything changed after that, though, and the 49ers staged a sensational rally before Ray Lewis and Co. shut it down. But there were plenty of white-knuckle moments and the Ravens (14-6) had to make four stops inside their 7 at the end.

Flacco’s arrival as a championship quarterback coincides with Lewis’ retirement – with a second Super Bowl ring no less. The win capped a sensational month since the star linebacker announced he was leaving the game after 17 Hall of Fame-caliber years.

At 4 hours, 14 minutes, it was the longest Super Bowl ever. Among the most thrilling, too.

The loss of power delayed the game 34 minutes and left players from both sides stretching and chatting with each other. It also cost Baltimore whatever momentum it built, and that was considerable after Jacoby Jones’ 108-yard kickoff return and game MVP Flacco’s three touchdown passes made it 28-6.

Michael Crabtree’s 31-yard touchdown reception on which he broke two tackles made

it 28-13. A couple minutes later, Frank Gore’s 6-yard run followed a 32-yard punt return by Ted Ginn Jr., and the 49ers were within eight.

Ray Rice’s fumble at his 24 led to David Akers’ 34-yard field goal, but Baltimore woke up for a long drive leading to rookie Justin Tucker’s 19-yard field goal.

San Francisco wasn’t done challenging, though, and Colin Kaepernick’s 15-yard TD run, the longest for a quarterback in a Super Bowl, made it 31-29. A 2-point conversion pass failed when the Ravens blitzed.

Kaepernick couldn’t get the Ravens into the end zone on the final three plays – there was contact on Crabtree on the final pass that appeared incidental, and Jim Harbaugh insisted it was pass interference.

New Orleans native Jones, one of the heroes in a double-overtime playoff win at Denver, seemed to put the game away with his record 108-yard sprint with the second-half kickoff.

Soon after, the lights went out – and when they came back on, the Ravens were almost powerless to slow the 49ers.

USELESS STUFF you didn’t really need to know...Albert Einstein married his first cousin • P.T. Hess Corporation announced a 2013 capital and exploratory budget of $6.8 billion, which is down 18 percent from 2012 expenditures of

approximately $8.3 billion. Of the $6.7 billion budgeted for Exploration and Production, $2.7 billion (40 percent) is dedicated to unconventional shale resources and the remainder is focused on conventional resources, with $1.85 billion (28 percent) for production, $1.6 billion (24 percent) for developments and

$550 million (8 percent) for exploration. As in recent years, $100 million is dedicated to Marketing and Refining and Corporate.

John Hess, Chairman and CEO, commented, “Our Corporation’s capital and exploratory budget for 2013 is focused on attractive investment opportunities and consistent with our plan, announced in July 2012, to significantly reduce overall expenditures in 2013.”

Greg Hill, President of Worldwide Exploration and Production, stated, “Our expenditures in the Bakken are planned to be $2.2 billion in 2013 versus approximately $3.1 billion in 2012. This reduced level of spend

is driven by lower well costs associated with our transition to pad drilling from hold by production mode and decreased investments in infrastructure projects. In addition, we plan to increase our expenditures in the emerging Utica shale play to $400 million from $300 million last year.

Remove the meat from the oven and carefully poke a hole in the pack while holding it over a heatproof container. Drain the liquid into the container and place it into the refrigerator to cool enough so that the fat separates from the rest of the liquid, approximately 1 hour. After 1 hour, transfer the liquid to the freezer and keep there until the fat cap has solidified, approximately 1 hour. Allow the ribs to sit at room temperature while the liquid is cooling or if serving the next day, place in the refrigerator until ready to finish.

Retrieve the liquid from the refrigerator and remove the fat cap that has formed on top. Measure out 1 tablespoon of the fat and reserve the rest for another time. Place the fat into a large saucier and place over medium heat. Once the fat has melted add the onion along with the remaining teaspoon of salt and stir to separate the onions into rings. Allow to cook for 2 to 3 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add the potatoes along with a pinch of black pepper and stir to combine. Next, add the liquid reserved from the meat and stir. Cover tightly and decrease the heat to low so that no heat is escaping the lid. Cook for 30 minutes or until the potatoes are fork tender.

Meanwhile, cut the meat away from the bone, removing the connective tissue and discarding. Once the potatoes are tender, uncover and set the meat atop the vegetables. Cover and continue to cook for 10 minutes. Serve sprinkled with the parsley.

After getting a taste for blood as children, Hansel (Jeremy Renner) and Gretel (Gemma Arterton) have become the ultimate vigilantes, hell bent on retribution. Now, unbeknownst to them, Hansel and Gretel have become the hunted, and must face an evil far greater than witches...their past.

Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters is a 2013 action-horror dark fantasy film with black comedy elements, co-written and directed by Tommy Wirkola and filmed in 3D. It is a continuation to the German folk fairy tale “Hansel and Gretel”, which was recorded by the Brothers Grimm and published in 1812. The film stars Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton in the titular roles of a brother-and-sister duo of professional witch hunters, along with Famke Janssen as the deadly leader of a coven of evil witches that they seek out to destroy.

Abandoned by their father deep in a forest, young Hansel and Gretel enter a gingerbread house and are nabbed by the old witch who resides in it. The witch forces Hansel to continuously eat candy while making Gretel prepare the oven, but the siblings outsmart

her and shove her into the fire. Throughout the years after the incident, Hansel and Gretel become ruthless bounty hunters dedicated to exterminating witches. Their work is relatively easy because, for an unknown reason, they are immune to spells and curses -- (C) Paramount.

This Week in HistoryOn February 13, 1633, Italian philosopher, astronomer and mathematician Galileo Galilei arrives in Rome to face charges of heresy for advocating Copernican theory, which holds that the Earth revolves around the Sun. Galileo officially faced the Roman Inquisition in April of that same year and agreed to plead guilty in exchange for a lighter sentence. Put under house arrest indefinitely by Pope Urban VIII, Galileo spent the rest of his days at his villa in Arcetri, near Florence, before dying on January 8, 1642. Today, Galileo is recognized for making important contributions to the study of motion and astronomy. His work influenced later scientists such as the English mathematician and physicist Sir Isaac Newton, who developed the law of universal gravitation. In 1992, the Vatican formally acknowledged its mistake in condemning Galileo.
