The Willey Family
A Genealogy
Compiled by
Mrs. Earl Lawrence Willey
Castile, New York
August 1956

The names of Willey, Willy, Wiley, Willie, Wylie and other spellings
of the word were derived from places where the first bearers of the names
lived. Those people resided at early dates in England and Scotland and
were of the landed gentry and yeomanry of Great Britain. Probably, the
earliest line was descended from William deWilley of Shropshire in the early
thirteenth century.
Records show that the first of the name in North^ATnenca was John Wiley
or Wylie who came, about 1635, from London, England to Reading, Mass.
Favorite Christian names have been Abraham, Edward, Isaac, James,
John, Joseph, Richard, Robert, Samuel, Thomas, and William.
Members of the family have spread to every state in the union and have
aided in the growth of the country which their ancestors helped to establish.
They have been characterized by their energy, integrity, patriotism and
civic and humanitarian interest. Captain John Wi I ley of Connecticut was
one of many by that name who served in the Revolutionary War. Among
those who have.?attained distinction are: Waitman T. Willey (1811-1900),
Virginia Statesman; John Heston Willey, Maryland clergyman and author;
Malcolm MacDonald Willey (b. 1897) Maine sociologist and author; and
Reverend Willey, clergyman at Gainesville, N. Y., Methodist Church in
1829.
One of the most ancient and best-known coat-of-arms of the family is
described as follows:
Arms. . ."Argent, three griffins passant sable ."
Crest.. ."A rose bush vert, bearing roses argent."
(Extracts from "The Name and Family of Will(e)y," compiled by the
Media Research Bureau, Washington, D .C .).
According to J. H. Spaulding's "Historical Relics of the White Moun¬
tains," a horrible fate overtook one Willey family in 1826, when all of its
nine members were buried by an avalanche in New England. Therefore,
that line cannot be traced.

ing the 14th century. According to tradition. Great Britain was their orig¬
inal home. They were partisans of James VI of Scotland, came to England

The name of Jones is wide-spread and appears to originate from Herbert, |
County of Vermandois, who came to England, at the time of the Conquest,
with William the Conqueror, (1066-81). From the Count descended Adam
Fitz-Herbert who acquired lands in Monmouthshire, then part of Wales,
about 1300. !
The family name of Jones was adopted during the reign of Henry VIIM
(1509-47); that was the period when most Welsh families took surnames. By L
1600, branches of the family had spread to many parts of England and Wales;
by 1622 the family was established in Ireland, near Dublin.
14
The ancient coat-of-arms displays a shield, divided vertically, one half
of which is blue, the other half is red. Upon this shield are three silver
lions, back on their hind legs in a fighting position.
Herewith is a part of the Jones ancestry of Mrs. Norman Willey. WiIliam
Jones was a Patriot Soldier of 1776. William's son, John C . (1780-1827)
had 12 ch . of whom the eldest ch ., Samuel Co^e was the line of descent.
The following excerpts are from Minard's History of Allegany Co. and
Hand's History of Nunda:
"In 1820, Samuel Cole Jones came to Allegany Co. from Vt. with his
parents . He was a kind and patient son who helped his mother raise 11 ch .
after his father's death in 1827. He returned to Vt. in 1830, married his
boyhood sweetheart, Lorette Woodworth and brought her to Allegany Co .
He was a self-made man of affairs; was a school-teacher and also held all
of the principal town offices in turn. Although not a lawyer, he handled
legal matters for his neighbors and appeared as their counsel in justice
court; was a surveyor and land agent for the famous Church family of Bel-
videre . He owned 1,000 acres including all of the Swains area . Became a
big lumber man .
Among his sisters and brothers were Mrs. Montgomery Thorp, Mesdames
Lewis and Luzon Van Ostrand, Mrs. Reynolds, Mrs. Townsend and Thomas
and William Jones."
In 1848, Samuel and his family went to Nunda where he bought lands in
Cooperville on the Creek Rd. The Genesee Valley Canal, in its heyday,
passed through his property. On one bank, stood a flour mill owned and
operated by Porter Kellogg, Father of Samuel's future son-in-law. The mill
was run day and night and required 4 coopers to make barrels in which to
ship the flour. Thus, the name Cooperville originated. Parts of thecanal
locks are in very good shape yet.
The farm, known as the Jones Homestead, was owned later by Samuel's
son Capt. John C., and his grandson, James W. In 1866, Capt. Jones re-
: placed the original farm house with a massive structure at a cost of $10,000.
From the attractive stone foundation to the picturesque glass-enclosed cup¬
ola, the stately country mansion became a real landmark. Although no
longer occupied by the Jones family, the original beauty of the dwelling
> has been preserved, with slight alterations, by its present owners, Mr. and
i Mrs. Leon Brooks.
Samuel Cole Jones, (Jan. 12, 1802-Aug. 22, 1863), m. Lorette Wood-
' worth, (Feb. 1, 1808-May 1, 1888). They were b. in Vt., m . there in
1830 and were bur. in a family cemetery, located on a spot chosen from
| their own land. They had 3 ch ., all b. in Allegany Co., John C . (18^3-
^ Apr. 8, 1875), Laura, (1835-1907) and Louisa Ann. (May 14, 1839-Apr.
. 15, 1921).

The family is deeply indebted to the following people without whose in¬
valuable help this history could not have been written:
Mr. Charles F. Putnam, 10 Richardson Circle, Framingham, Mass., who
did extensive researching and typing on several occasions.
Mrs. Nina Willey Jones, aged 89, of 675 E . Gage Ave., Memphis,
Tenn., who loaned a most fascinating genealogy compiled in 1950 byMr.
Putnam. (Mrs. Jones and Mr. Putnam are direct descendants of John Willey
of the 4th generation.)
Mrs. Marjorie C. Frost and Mr. James J . Cutler of Nunda, who spent
many hours in research.
Due to their splendid cooperation, a difficult task was turned into a
pleasant pastime. I wish to extend sincere thanks to them.
