The Willett Buzz A Newspaper by Willett Students for Willett Students December 2007 Interview: Mrs. Webber-Johnson by Hirra Akhtar, Grade 5 photo by Julian Fuchs, Grade 6 illustration by Tara Bertsch, Grade 6 Q: What is your favorite book? A: That’s a tough one, but I’ll have to say Johnny Tremain. Q: Why did you decide to become a librarian? A: I decided to become a librarian because ever since I was a child and my dad read to me every night, I have loved books. Q: How long have you been working at Willett? A: This is the beginning of my eighth year. Q: Why did you decide to work at a school library instead of a local library? A: Because I love kids and I want to pass my love of reading on to children. Q: What do you like to do in your spare time? A: My son plays soccer, so I like to watch soccer; also I like to knit, cook, read, and garden. Q: Being a librarian, do you like to watch TV, listen to the radio or stereo, or go on the computer for fun? A: I like listening to music most, because I can do other things at the same time. Going on the computer is in the middle because it is interesting to look up things and find out information, and I can also e-mail people. But I don’t like watching TV too much, except for educational channels. Movie Review: “Enchanted” by Clarissa Franke, Grade 5 Ever since I saw “Enchanted,” I've been singing all day long. “Enchanted” is about a girl named Giselle. In the beginning, she starts out as a cartoon, but ends up in real, live New York City, where she meets a man named Robert who tries to help her find her way back to Andalaysia.

This is not your typical Disney Princess movie because it mixes cartoon with live action. It also takes place in a big city. “Enchanted” is a good movie for all ages. It is funny, charming and exciting. I highly recommend it as a family movie. It will keep you on the edge of your seat, so get out and go see “Enchanted!” (“Enchanted,” Rated PG. Runtime: 1 hour, 47 minutes. Starring Amy Adams and Patrick Dempsey. Directed by Kevin Lima. Currently showing in Davis at the Holiday 6 Theater on F Street.)

PERSONAL ESSAYS

The two essays that follow were written in response to a Pub Club writing prompt: Who are you proud of? Why? My Mom Won by Meg Robinson, Grade 4 photo by Sarah Robinson

Recently, my mom, Susan Lovenburg, won the race for School Board. Before she won, our schedule was always packed. Sometimes, I didn’t get to see her for an hour or more. It could

go up to a whole day! Many times she was out for meals, or at parties or meetings. I was proud of her to take on such a big challenge but I did miss her when she was away. When it came to be Election Day, we were all excited and jumpy. We had an

Election Party that night. The three other candidates, Richard Harris, Bob Schelen, and Joe Spector, had parties of their own to go to. We were by the T.V. waiting for the results to come in. I didn’t stay late enough to see the final results, but I did find out in the morning. My mom and Richard Harris won! I was very, extremely proud of my mom. My Sister written and illustrated by Camila Ortiz, Grade 5 My sister is not bossy or mean (though she’s extremely sarcastic) and I can almost always trust her to have my back, however reluctantly. I am proud of her, mostly because she is an absolute genius playing the cello. She has developed a little bit of fame in Davis. Every now and then, at the pizza shop or wherever we happen to be, someone will tap my sister’s shoulder and say, “Do you play the cello?” She’ll nod and smile, a little embarrassed. She’s modest. There is almost nothing worse than a sibling who sits around and brags about their “wonderful” achievements. My sister does not do that (though over the years, my family has made her acknowledge that she is an amazing cellist). My sister is the BEST 15-year-old sibling that I could possibly have, and I think, no matter how much she changes, and me too, that that much will always stay the same.

Interview with Mrs. Lilliedoll by Linda Su, Grade 5 photo by Julian Fuchs, Grade 6 Q: What’s your favorite food? A: Broccoli. Q: What do you like to do in your spare time? A: I like spending time with my family, playing with my dog, gardening, and reading. Q: What’s your favorite animal? A: I like dogs. Q: What was your favorite grade? A: 5th grade! Q: Why did you want to be a teacher? A: I was an aide in a third-grade classroom. I thought it would be nice to be a teacher. Music H.Q. by William Forkin, Grade 5 illustrated by Casey Powers, Grade 6 For those of you who’ve just started liking music or aren’t yet interested but want to be, I would recommend that you listen to recent music. But if you’ve been listening to music for a while and want some variety, try listening to songs from the 60s through the 80s, like the Beatles or Beach Boys. I recommend the Beatles because of their variety; no song of theirs is the same. My favorite album is “Abbey Road” because of their two songs “Maxwell’s Silver Hammer”

and “Octopus’s Garden.” They’re so easy to play (or sing) along to. Come to think about it, pretty much every song is easy to play or sing to. So if you play an instrument or sing, you could play (or sing) to almost anything! Well, that’s Music H.Q. See you later.

Opinion Piece: Sandwiches written and illustrated by Anysia Lee, Grade 4 I hate sandwiches. The worst food or snack, if you can call it that, is a sandwich. I cannot think of any other food that is worse. I do not like it because I don’t like bread. Well, it’s the basic ingredient. I mean, I like peanut butter, but I absolutely do not like it when it’s stuck between two pieces of bread. Everyone knows that most people have sandwiches for lunch. So do I! Why do parents even pack those things for lunch?! When I grow up I will never pack sandwiches for my kids.

A Parody of “Oh Christmas Tree” We don’t usually publish poems in the Willett Buzz, but given the holiday season, we made an exception for this very funny poem by an anonymous sixth grader. Illustration by Casey Powers, Grade 6. –Ed.

Oh Christmas tree, Oh Christmas tree, Why did you have to land on me? I cut you down, that’s not so mean, But now I’m squashed and very lean.

Oh Christmas tree, Oh Christmas tree, Why did you have to land on me? You were the one I chose to take, But now I’m squashed like a pancake. Oh Christmas tree, Oh Christmas tree, Why did you have to land on me?
