Dear Wico Campers, Staff, Parents and Alumnae, Greetings from Camp and Happy Fall! To quote the Grateful Dead, “What a long strange trip it’s been!” Summer 2020 was not what we expected. In fact, this year has been bizarre to say the least. Through it all, we have learned to get up when we feel knocked down, to lean on our friends and family, to appreciate the little things and to have faith in ourselves. When we experience challenging moments at camp, we work through them. Before moving on, we focus on lessons learned, so that we can do better the next time. Learning from our challenges and missteps is one of the many life skills we develop at camp. To that end, here are some of our take-aways from Summer 2020. We plan to take these with us and apply them to Summer 2021 and beyond! 1. We are stronger than we think! 2. Camp friends are always with us (even when not with us in person). 3. Camp is about each other! As much as we love our site on the shores of Newfound Lake, Wico is a feeling created by people. We recreated that feeling at Family Camp in 2020. And for those who could not join us, we heard from many of you after creating your own mini Wico summer reunions. You sent us photos of your time together. Still others connected via social media. Many of us pivoted to create our own “Wico Love” this summer. 4. We tend to fear change, but change can be a good thing. There are always lessons to be learned and sometimes change prompts us to pivot towards something better! Approaching next summer, and all of the milestones associated with it, makes us focus on gratitude and on applying the lessons learned in 2020. We are grateful for the memories created at Family Camp (see photos on page 11) and now we literally cannot wait to see the first buses pull into camp next summer. We are so grateful to be a part of the Wico community and are counting down the days until we are together in person. Speaking of, Summer 2021 will be remarkable for several reasons not the least of which is that we will reboot our 100th year celebration! We will celebrate being together and Wico’s 100th summer each and every day. Stay tuned for more details about some of the ways we plan to celebrate the 100 summers of Wico! What are you looking forward to in 2021? We will be in touch with all of you throughout the year with updates and to create opportunities for you to connect with each other and with us. Please reach out with any questions you may have about this coming summer. We are available and are happy to help! • Dear Wico Campers, Staff, Parents and Alumnae,

Greetings from Camp and Happy Fall!

Clemi M. and Charlotte M. got very close to Wico this summer by spending time on Newfound Lake. They even took a photo of themselves with the Wico beach in the background. This is awesome, girls! Thank you! We can’t wait to see you there in person in 2021!

Sadie B. celebrated an extended birthday Wico-style with most of the girls from her 2019 cabin and a few future Wico girls! They enjoyed watersports, a rainy day cook-off, tennis, volleyball and ate plenty of ice cream! Kudos to Sadie’s mom and Wico alum, Kristin, for acting as camp counselor for the girls!

The Larit Girls showed us their Wico spirit while away from camp this summer: When you can’t go to camp, you bring camp to your backyard! Nice work showing your Wico Spirit, Girls!

Sophie L. and Amelia L. got a visit from Charlotte L. over the summer! Thanks for sharing, girls! We love seeing all of you together!

Corinne P. and Halle E. had a socially-distanced visit on Long Beach Island in New Jersey over the summer. Here they are showing off their creative camera skills. Way to go, ladies! We are so glad you were able to see each other!

From late winter, here are Devin B. and Annabelle B. at Malmo Castle in Malmo, Sweden with the Turning Torso, Malmo’s most famous skyscraper, in the background. Devin was competing with Annabelle’s sister Maddie in her first international skating competition!

Stella C. celebrated her late winter birthday surrounded by Wico peeps, Sami E. and Alexa H.! Fortunately, they squeezed in their visit pre-Covid!

Email fun news about celebrations, activities, school, camp sleepovers, etc. to [email protected]. We’ll include your news in the next edition of The Wicosutan.

    Wico love, Jess

    WITH JESSHey Wico,

Fall is in the air! Though I am lamenting the return of colder weather, I know this means that summer is closer than we think! I missed the typical sounds of all of you at camp this summer, but we did get to enjoy seeing some of you (and your parents!) as campers in our Family Camp program. We still got a taste of our early morning flagpole sports scores and evening tooth calls, which has made me even more appreciative of the amazing summer we will have with all of you in 2021!

Speaking of 2021, I cannot wait to reboot our 100th Summer celebration! Since returning to our offices, we have been hard at work planning for the most amazing summer. From ordering fun and unique enrollment shirts celebrating this milestone (on their way to a mailbox near you soon!), to planning the most enthusiastic birthday dinner camp has ever seen, we are ready to celebrate moments big, small, and everything in between. I can hardly wait to sit under the Old Pine, continuing special Wico traditions that have seen Wico girls through 100 summers so far!

In addition to events at camp, songs at Wico tie us together from summer to summer. Listed below are my top three favorite Wico songs:

    1. The Alma Mater 2. On a Mountain High3. Cheer, Cheer, Cheer

*If you want the lyrics, they can be found in our songbook on the website!

Do you have a favorite camp song or tradition? Let me know by sending an email: [email protected].

    JESS

Please join us as we thank Hannah Christmann, Wico’s Staffing Coordinator, for all of her hard work as she moves on from Wico to her next adventure.

We know that she won’t be a stranger and hope that life brings her back to Wico soon!

    Thanking Hannah

DEEP THOUGHTS with CarlyHey Wico, Hey What?!I hope everyone is having a safe and successful start to the school year (be it virtual, in person or a combination of the two). This summer was certainly not the one we had all planned and hoped for, but it will make our 100th summer (reboot) that more special. I could not be more excited to start counting down to Summer 2021!

As a kid at camp, if I woke up before the music played, reading was one of my favorite things to do before bed or early in the morning. While I read a lot of books, I also have vivid memories of reading Archie comics that my parents would mail to me (if you aren’t familiar with Archie, the CW series Riverdale is loosely based off of the comic series).

Reading is still one of my favorite things to do and often makes me think about my days as a camper and counselor. I thought it would be fun to share with all of you a list of books I used to read when I was growing up.

I love that at Wico we have a library filled with books for all of you to read over the summer as well. I know it is a favorite spot for a lot of you and it gets good use, which makes me happy! Feel free to email me to share your favorite books or tell me what you are currently reading. You can email me at [email protected] or just say hi!

Sending lots of Wico love to you all.

Wico’s Fall Fest 2020! We missed seeing everyone this summer and know that you missed each other! For that reason, we have invited enrolled campers (both returning and first-timers) to our first ever Fall Fest! We have planned a number of fun, interactive and safe outdoor activities! Activities will include: various arts & crafts activities, gaga, lawn games, and of course, reconnecting with our friends!

Please note: this is a drop off event for campers only.

    WICO STAFF BIRTHDAYS...

  • Wico Cares:Each summer, Zuni campers lead our Project Morry Day of Giving. We ran this event virtually in 2020. We want to thank all of camp families for their support in this endeavor. Thank you for your generosity! Each dollar donated goes directly to helping the Project Morry students have an incredible summer experience that is anchored by monthly meetings during the school year.

If you haven’t made a donation and would like to do so, you may donate online at: http://www.projectmorry.org. Please note “Camp Wicosuta Swim A Thon” in the memo.

Project Morry is a year-round youth development organization that provides to each child a multi-year commitment anchored by a superb residential summer camp experience. The children, for whom these experiences would not otherwise be available, benefit from a network of support and gain increased social skills, enhanced self-esteem, positive core values and a greater sense of personal responsibility.

Calling All Wico Big and Little Sisters (aka New and Returning Campers)! One of our goals this year is keeping everyone as connected as possible! We hope that 2020 Bigs and Littles will continue to get to know each other during the coming school year. To that end, we are creating a new questionnaire/activity that will help you continue to stay in touch with each other. Keep an eye out for that—it’s coming soon via email!

RETURNING CAMPERS (Eagle and older): If you were assigned a Little Sister in 2020, we expect you to continue that job moving forward. If, for some reason, you CANNOT honor that commitment moving forward, please email [email protected] by November 1, 2020, so that we can rematch your 2020 Little.

If you are a returning camper, were not assigned a little sister for 2020 and are interested in being a Big in 2021, please log into CampMinder and fill out the Big Sister Volunteer Form by December 15, 2020, so that we can add you to the 2021 Big Sister list— priority is given to those who signed up and were not matched up in 2020. We will do our best to match up as many Bigs as possible!

So you want to be a Big Sister? So you want to be a Big Sister? So you want to be a Big Sister?

As travel has been limited over the last few months, our typical supply of Where in the World pictures is a little thin. Fortunately, for us, Clemi M and sister, Charlotte M (see Camper Corner) spent time on Newfound Lake this summer. In this photo, Clemi is wearing the required Wico uniform. For now, the answer to “Where in the World?” is “Where else, but Wicosuta!”

    Greetings from Newfound Lake…

Staff UpdateWe want to congratulate Priscilla Griffin on her recent retirement from teaching. In addition to all of the Wico Girls who have been impacted by her, hundreds of kindergarteners have had the privilege of having her as their teacher. We cannot think of a better human to introduce kids to formal education than our own, PGriff!

Priscilla will celebrate 55 summers at Wico in 2021 and for the first time in many years, will be at camp to join us in welcoming not just campers, but staff members, as well. For those who may not know, Prissy (as she’s fondly called at camp) is exceedingly dedicated, so much so that each year leading up to this one, she would complete her school year, close up her classroom and typically drive up to camp (the same day!) in time to lead Wico’s traditional opening campfire.

Truly, we could not ask for a better Wico historian, mother, grandmother and guardian angel than Priscilla. We are so glad to have her at Wico and look forward to celebrating her 55th summer and Wico’s 100th in 2021!

Hello from 03241!! Weather is everything when it comes to new buildings and improvements at camp. Fortunately, we have had a good stretch of weather allowing our maintenance crew to take full advantage. They have been painting tons, planting grass, and prepping the property for winter and new projects. Check out photos of some of the projects we completed for Summer 2020:

Wico Family Camp 2020 Pics!Wico Family Camp 2020 Pics!Wico families packed their bags and joined us as we took Wico to the beautiful Green Mountains of Vermont. Wicosuta Family Camp was an incredible opportunity to share in the joy of camp as a family at our host site, Camp Akeela. Our two sessions in July were exclusive to Wicosuta families, alumnae and friends.

Parents who listened to their child’s camp stories all year long got to live some of those moments in person, and alumnae had the chance to relive some of their favorite childhood moments.

Swimming, boating and fishing was enjoyed on the lake and many families took part in nature walks and hikes! Friendship bracelet making, wood-working, tie-dye, family sports tournaments, archery and a Wico Family Camp Challenge Cup/Color War were all on the schedule! A great time was had by all!
