In a class of its own: the new Advanced IC fromMetrohm. It is based on the high-performance modular Metrohm IC System, but the central systemcomponents have been thoroughly reworked andextended. Both the software and hardware havebeen significantly improved, so that with the Advanced IC an even better performance in anionand cation analysis can be achieved – both with and without chemical suppression.

With immediate effect the serial 818 Dual-PistonHigh-Pressure Pump is now equipped with a latestgeneration of electronic controls. Eluent flow is extremely precise and practically pulsation-free. The820 IC Separation Center has been extended byincluding autonomous column heating; this ensuresthe optimal temperature stability of the whole system. The analog output signal of the 819 IC De-tector is now transferred to the optically decoupled A/D converter of the 830 IC Interface via a speciallyshielded D-sub-9 cable. This reliably prevents external interferences from affecting the system.

There are also clear changes in the software: IC Net2.3 sees the introduction of IC Cap. This new adapt-able user interface simplifies the operation of the IC system: «analysis with a single mouse-click». Theoperation and control of even complex systems isnow child’s play. In the background the «ProtectedProtocol» ensures and optimizes communicationbetween the system components. The implementedstatistics functions increase user-friendliness. Thelatest version of the Metrodata IC software is

completely compliant with «21 CFR Part 11» as a matter of course.

The innovative system solution Metrohm AdvancedIC is completely PC-controlled. The number of con-trols on the instruments has been reduced to theabsolute minimum. Wet chemistry has been com-pletely separated from the electronics and controls.

The highest possible degree of functionality, logicalconstruction and intelligent software make yourintroduction to ion chromatography with Metrohmeasy. In schools and universities the Compact BasicIC shows just how uncomplicated ion chromato-graphy can be. With a minimal amount of training the modular and online instruments can be safelymastered in the laboratory or in production. Thismeans that on the one hand it is a pleasure to workwith Metrohm IC instruments, on the other handthey help to reduce costs in a very effective manner.

You will obtain reliable instruments with a long working life from Metrohm, no matter whether you decide on a Compact Ion Chromatograph, theAdvanced IC System or one of the two Online ICs.Regardless of whether with or without automation, all IC systems are characterized by the perfect inte-gration of all individual components, with or withoutsuppression. This guarantees minimal down time for service and maintenance. Thanks to high qualitystandards and intelligent product design, the operating costs are decidedly low. In addition, theMetrohm anion suppressor «MSM» comes with a 10years' warranty. You will not find a price for a cationsuppressor anywhere, as this is not necessary withMetrohm products.

Metrohm has been supplying the complete field ofion analysis from a single source for more than 50years. This is why Metrohm is always able to supplyyou with the optimal solution to your individual analytical problems.

Advanced IC Systems

Small instruments – high quality: the Metrohm compact class contains everything that an efficiention chromatograph requires: dual-piston pump, pulsation absorber, electromagnetic injection valve, peristaltic pump, high-performance detector, eluentorganizer as well as a data acquisition and process-ing module. All components which come into contact with the sample or eluents are metal-free.

With an extremely small footprint and a height ofonly 45 cm the Metrohm Compact IC Systems con-tain the maximum of IC in the minimum of space:

• Injection valve

• IC Pump – extremely low-pulsation dual-pistonpump with a flow range of 0.2 to 2.5 mL/min and a maximum pressure of 25 MPa (250 bar); a connection for an external compressed gas supplyis not necessary

• Pulsation absorber – even with low-level pressurevariations the pulsation absorber reliably protectsyour column against damage

• Column compartment – the perfect insulation of the housing not only creates thermally stable conditions for the columns, it also shields the system against electromagnetic interference

• Columns – no matter whether anion columns withor without chemical suppression, cation columnsor separating columns for organic acids – theCompact IC Systems have space for all of them

• Suppressor – the «MSM» Metrohm SuppressorModule is already included in the instrument ver-sions for chemical suppression. Pressure resistant, with fully automatic regeneration, high perform-ance, top reproducibility and – last but not least –a long working life: the «MSM» is and remainsthe suppressor of choice

• Peristaltic pump – the «MSM» is regenerated and rinsed by backflushing resulting in maximumuptime

• Detector block – the heart of the instrument with built in high precision temperature controland additional insulation

With these favorably-priced and compact ion chro-matographs Metrohm has opened up IC as a routineanalytical tool at a cost all laboratories can afford.

The 790 Personal IC • is favorably priced as regards acquisition, operation

and maintenance• allows you to assign one IC to one application• is a very attractive alternative to photometry and

gravimetry

The 790 Personal IC is completely controlled from aPC. Operation is extremely simple thanks to its user-friendly software. The conductivity detector coversconcentrations from the ppb to the percent range; its temperature stability is outstanding. The time-proven «MSM» Metrohm Suppressor Module allowsfavorably-priced analyses with chemical suppressionand is included in the version 2.790.0020 as stan-dard.

For automation of determinations with the 790Personal IC the following instruments are available:766 IC Sample Processor, 788 IC Filtration SampleProcessor and 813 Compact IC Autosampler. The eluent organizer is available as an option.

The 790 Personal IC is designed as a first-user modelor as a «stand alone» ion chromatograph for a singledefined application. The instrument is quick and easyto use. There are no compromises regarding datasecurity and accuracy of the results – these are of the highest level.

The very good price-performance ratio does notmean that you have to do without top-quality com-ponents:

• The built-in IC pump used in the 790 Personal IC is based on the time-proven serial dual-piston principle. This guarantees a very constant and low-pulsation flow and therefore a steady baseline.

• The time-proven «MSM» Metrohm SuppressorModule is used for chemical suppression; thismeans that chemical suppression and low costs are no longer contradictory terms.

• The conductivity detector, the heart of the 790Personal IC, impresses by its outstanding tempera-ture stability which enables it to provide low-noiseand precise conductivity measurements.

The conductivity detector of the 790 Personal IC hasa measuring range of 1000 µS/cm. This means thation concentrations from the high ppb to the percent-age range can be determined. The determinationlimit is about 0.1 mg/L (approx. 100 ppb) for anionsand cations. You can work with or without chemicalsuppression. As a result you can also utilize the advantages of weakly acidic eluents in anion analysiswhen working without chemical suppression.

Of course, you can also adapt the 790 Personal IC forchanging applications. However, in this case the 761

Advanced IC Systems

Compact IC or the modular IC systems offer greaterflexibility. With these instruments you can store thesystem parameters of the various applications veryconveniently with the 761 software or the IC Netsoftware and call them up again whenever neces-sary. Please contact your local Metrohm agency whowill provide you with competent advice for solvingapplication problems and help you to select theoptimal IC system for your particular requirements.

With the 790 Personal IC you will receive a top-quality ion chromatograph. The range of applica-tions for which it can be used is correspondinglylarge. Its full capabilities are demonstrated foranions and cations in the ppm range.

With the 792 Basic IC Metrohm is offering you two different things:In the first place we are providing the education sector with an extraordinarily favorably-priced ionchromatograph that will allow schools, universities, occupational and advanced training facilities as wellas company-internal training laboratories to pur-chase one or more ion chromatographs and equiptheir training rooms with the necessary workplaces.

In the second place Metrohm has published a practical text-book that presents the basics ofion chromatography in an easilyunderstandable way as well ascovering the theory at both a simple and at a more demandinglevel. It also describes 22 experi-ments which open up the wholeworld of ion chromatography tothe students.

With the 792 Basic IC the stu-dents are provided with an instrument with whichthey can learn the essential features of ion chro-matography in a very simple way. As ion chromatog-raphy belongs to the HPLC family this means thatthe basics of this analytical technique are also cov-ered. The software program allows different hard-ware systems to be created and operated using dif-ferent methods. Individual methods can be createdand stored for each experiment, each student andeach application.

The 792 Basic IC is, of course, not just limited toeducation but can also carry out standard applica-tions in the analytical laboratory. Regardless ofwhether anions or cations are to be analyzed, orwhether organic acids need to be determined – the 792 Basic IC provides reproducible and accurateresults within a very short time. The detection limit is below 100 ppb (0.1 mg/kg).

In all Metrohm instruments, and this includes thenew 792 Basic IC, the expression «cost of owner-ship» is of great importance. This covers the runningcosts associated with the instrument. For the BasicIC these are very low. It does not require an expen-sive external supply of gas as the built-in dual-pistonpump provides the necessary performance as a mat-ter of course. This means that the pump is responsi-ble for the low-pulsation baseline. Even the injectionvalve works without nitrogen or helium. This savesmoney. If operated properly, the working life of the«MSM» Metrohm Suppressor Module for chemicalsuppression is practically unlimited.

Carbonate/hydrogen carbonate eluent, dilute sulfuric acid and water for regenerating and rinsingthe suppressor – all the necessary solutions can beprepared at a low cost. Even with high samplethroughputs the running costs can be kept low. The software is included with the instrument anddoes not have to be ordered separately.

«Top of the line» ion chromatography

Precise analysis – from ppm to ppt, from milligram to nanogram per liter. The built-in column heatinglowers the detection limits even further. The opti-mized high-pressure pump reduces pulsation to theabsolute minimum. Improved signal lines guaranteean even lower sensitivity to interference.

Flexible analysis that can be individually and rapidlyadapted to suit each application. The Metrohm IinlineSample Preparation «MISP» technique (see page 14)significantly simplifies work and improves the preci-sion of the results.

Simple analysis that can be reliably controlled byanybody. The new user interface IC Cap is child’splay to use. Operator errors are reliably avoided. The dialog can be carried out in several languages.

Favorably-priced analysis – low maintenance costs, simple service, no external gas supply, no trouble-prone cation suppressor and 10 years’ warranty onthe «MSM» anion suppressor.

In a class of its own: the new Advanced IC

«MIC-1 Advanced» – Modular anion or cation system with electronic suppression

Advanced IC Systems

The «MIC-1 Advanced» IC system has three compo-nents: the low-pulsation 818 Dual-Piston Pump, the819 High-Performance Detector and the 820 ICSeparation Center. Both anions and cations can bedetermined with this arrangement without chemicalsuppression. This high performance system is veryfavorably priced.

The special electronic suppression of the 819 ICDetector covers very low concentration ranges (<10 ppb) for cations and anions. The built-in col-umn oven and the extremely low-pulsation IC pumpadditionally improve the signal-noise ratio.

As work is carried out without chemical suppressionthis means that the range of eluents that can beused is practically unlimited. Difficult separating problems can be solved any limitations imposed bythe eluent system or chemical suppressor into con-sideration.

The system can be automated with the 813Compact Autosampler (Order number 2.813.0010),the 766 IC Sample Processor (Order number2.766.0010) or the 788 IC Filtration SampleProcessor (Order number 2.788.0010).

The «MIC-2 Advanced» modular anion system withelectronic and chemical suppression gives you thelargest possible degree of flexibility: you have a freechoice of eluents whenever you are working withelectronic suppression alone. As the sensitivity of thesystem can be increased by using chemical suppres-sion for anions (in contrast to cations), this systemadditionally contains the «MSM» Metrohm Suppres-sor Module, which is incorporated in the 820 ICSeparation Center. The 833 IC Liquid HandlingPump Unit is used for regeneration and rinsing. The 820 Separation Center is equipped with a col-umn oven which lowers the detection limits evenfurther, particularly when working with a high background conductivity.

It goes without saying that cations can also bedetermined with this system. In this case the suppressor and pump unit are simply switched off. After the column and eluent have been changed the cation system is ready for use.

The system is completely made from PEEK: pumphead, valve, pulsation absorber, «MSM» and all inline filters are made from PEEK (polyetheretherke-tone). The maximum pressure at which such a system can be operated is 35 MPa (5076 psi).

Simple automation with the 766 IC Sample Proces-sor (Order number 2.766.0010) or the 788 IC Filtra-tion Sample Processor (Order number 2.788.0010)can be carried out directly and without additionalcables. If the 833 IC Liquid Handling Pump Unit isalso to be remotely controlled by the sample chang-er then a cable and an adapter are additionallyrequired:

Determination of cations with electronic suppres-sion? Determination of anions with electronic andchemical suppression? Making parallel and inde-pendent measurements? This is no problem with the combined Metrohm «MIC-3 Advanced» anion-cation IC system. Two completely separated chan-nels, which on request can be controlled simultane-ously or independently by software, allow optimalwork at the highest performance level.

The outstanding abilities of this system – high signal-noise ratio, auto-zero function, range andfull-scale adaptations, low-pulsation pump system, etc. – allow sample preparation to be dispensedwith wherever a preconcentration technique wouldotherwise have to be used. This simplifies andaccelerates your work and also helps to reducecosts.

Suppression only when it is necessary – for thedetermination of anions. The «MSM» is resistant to pressure and also resistant to a wide range of solvents. Even sulfuric acid at a concentration of 2 mol/L does not affect it. This means a long working life and low maintenance costs.

Crystal clear, clinically pure, no bacteria and no par-ticles: this would be the ideal sample for ion chro-matography. Unfortunately in reality this is often notthe case. Apart from the ions to be analyzed, thesamples also may contain large amounts of aggressivesubstances which, if the sample were to be measureddirectly, would make the analysis difficult if not im-possible. Strongly contaminated samples could des-troy the column or block capillaries, pump valves orthe detector.

This is why critical samples must principally be subjected to a sample preparation procedure. This in-cludes all the steps which a sample must passthrough before it is introduced into the IC system.

In practice a number of methods are used: filtration, ultrafiltration, solid-phase extraction, dialysis, dilution, preconcentration, etc. One thing common to all these methods is that they usually need to be carriedout manually. However, manual sample preparationmeans a high workload is required; this is often accompanied by poorer reproducibility, inexact results and high costs.

The solution is MISP

Metrohm can now provide you with «MISP»,Metrohm Inline Sample Preparation, a range of methods which allows sample preparation to be automated and carried out considerably more efficiently than was previously the case.

«MISP» has an enormous potential for the optimi-zation of sample preparation in ion chromatography.Costs can be dramatically reduced, the quality of theresults is increased significantly and the field in whichion chromatography can be used as a powerful ana-lytical method is considerably expanded.

What is the principle behind Metrohm Inline SamplePreparation? In the course of the analysis there is onesmall but crucial alteration. Whereas sample prepara-tion steps were previously carried out before the sam-ple was placed on the sample changer or introducedinto the IC system, these sample preparation stepshave now been automated and included between the sample changer and the IC system. The list belowprovides an overview of the various fully automatedsteps that can be carried out inline between the sample vessel and injection valve.

«MIC-4 Advanced» – Modular cation systemwith electronic suppression and sample preconcentration

The modular «MIC-4 Advanced» anion or cationsystem with electronic suppression and preconcen-tration has, when compared with a simple anion-cation system consisting of an 818 IC Pump, 819 ICDetector and 820 IC Separation Center, beenextended by two further components: the 766 ICSample Processor and a preconcentration columnwhich is located on the injection valve instead of thesample loop.

The built-in peristaltic pump of the 766 IC SampleProcessor transfers your standard and then yoursamples to the preconcentration column. The pre-concentrated sample is then eluted onto the separa-ting column in counterflow.

The favorably-priced system works with electronicsuppression. This is characterized by the fact thatthe peak area or height is directly proportional tothe concentration of the particular ion throughout awide range. This is why it is normally only necessaryto carry out a one-point calibration, which makeswork quicker and easier.

The «MIC-5 Advanced» modular anion system withchemical suppression and sample preconcentrationopens up numerous possibilities for detection at lowand very low concentrations. Even the detection ofanions in concentrations in the lower ppt range isachieved easily and reliably.

The 766 IC Sample Processor allows the system tobe automated to a large extent. As chemical sup-pression is used, multi-point calibrations are usuallyrequired. With the 766 IC Sample Processor this can be carried out automatically and reproducibly.

The system can be converted from an anion systemwith preconcentration and chemical suppression toa fully automated cation system with electronic sup-pression with and without sample preconcentrationin only a few moves.

Its universal use extends the range of applications.Once again the modular design and flexibility of the Metrohm Advanced IC Systems pays for itself.

Usually it is not the analysis itself that causes prob-lems, but rather the sample matrix in which theanalysis is to be carried out. The «MIC-6 Advanced»modular anion system with chemical suppression, sample preconcentration and matrix eliminationsimplifies sample preparation in two respects: on theone hand matrix effects can be eliminated, while onthe other hand the preconcentration technique canbe used to reliably determine low concentrations.

The «contaminated» sample is transferred to the«sample loop» of valve B by the built-in peristalticpump of the 788 IC Filtration Sample Processor. The valve is switched and now uses deionized water, supplied via the 833 IC Liquid Handling Pump Unit,to transfer the sample to the preconcentration column located on valve A of the 820 IC SeparationCenter. At the same time the deionized water isused to rinse the contaminants from the preconcen-tration column. These steps can be repeated asoften as necessary. When the enriched sample vol-ume is large enough, valve A is switched and thesample is transferred to the separating column –now without the interfering matrix.

Matrix elimination significantly increases the workinglife of the anion and cation columns. Sample pre-concentration extends the range of applications.Automation reduces the costs per sample. WithMetrohm Advanced IC Systems you can safely meetall the demands placed on you.

Automated sample preparation is increasingly becoming an integral part of a high-performance IC system. With the introduction of the patenteddialysis method Metrohm has placed a new mile-stone on the way towards this goal.

The determination of anions and cations in fruitjuice, milk, soil eluates or boring oil emulsions canbe carried out quickly and without any problemswith the Metrohm «MIC-7 Advanced» dialysis sys-tem and without damaging the separating column.

Dialysis is neither filtration, nor extraction, nor digestion – see page 35. In dialysis the ions passfrom the sample solution into the acceptor solutionby diffusion through a dialysis membrane. After only a short time a concentration equilibrium isestablished between the sample solution and theacceptor solution. The number of ions between the sample solution is not reduced as they are constant-ly being resupplied. While the ions can pass throughthe membrane almost unhindered, larger particles – the matrix – are simple transported past the dialysismembrane. This reduces matrix effects to the absolute minimum.

The Metrohm dialysis method works according tothe patented stopped-flow principle: about 10 mLsample is passed along the dialysis membrane by theperistaltic pump built into the 788 IC Dialysis SampleProcessor while the acceptor solution remains at

The compact IC system with integrated dialysis. Forroutine tasks and detection limits down to the ppbrange, the combination of the 761 Compact IC withthe 788 IC Dialysis Sample Processor is the optimalsolution whenever contaminated samples have to bemeasured.

Dialysis is the method of choice whenever particles, oil droplets or coarse organic contaminants have tobe kept away from the whole IC system. The cellu-lose acetate dialysis membrane provides the neces-sary security without limiting the reproducibility and precision of the measurements.

As two valves are required for the dialysis, the 761Compact IC is extended by one valve with the 812Valve Unit. The system is controlled by the IC Netsoftware. This version requires two free COM portson the PC.

The «MIC-9 Advanced» IC system combines the twomost important electrochemical detection methods:conductivity measurement and amperometric deter-mination. Conductometry with the 819 High-Per-formance Detector analyzes either cations with elec-tronic suppression or anions with chemical suppres-sion down to the lower ppb range. The pulsed am-perometric detector of the 817 Bioscan determinesreadily oxidizable or reducible substances, primarilythe carbohydrates. The detection sensitivities areequal to those of the conductivity detector. The 817Bioscan can be operated in three different modes:pulsed amperometric, amperometric or in the scanmode. The latter mode is chiefly important in thedevelopment of applications and is used to deter-mine the optimal oxidation potential.

With the «MIC-9 Advanced» you will receive a com-pletely flexible system, with which you can workwith two channels, either in parallel or independent-ly. The only common system component is the 788IC Filtration Sample Processor which, thanks to itsultrafiltration cell, is outstandingly suitable for sam-ple preparation.

The Metrohm high-pressure gradient system allowsthe separation of anions which elute very quicklyand anions which elute extremely slowly in a singlerun. The gradient technique, regardless of whether a carbonate or hydroxide eluent is used, offers enor-mous advantages for this type of application andprovides a better separation with significant savingsin time.

The system makes it possible to work with very concentrated eluents. The 828 IC Dual Suppressor isable to chemically suppress eluents up to a concen-tration of 50 mmol/L HCO3

– or OH– at a flow of 1 mL/min. Regeneration takes place continuously byelectrochemical means, so that additional solutionsare no longer required.

The 828 IC Dual Suppressor is also equipped with a system for CO2 suppression that reduces the back-ground conductivity to a few µS/cm. The injectionpeak and system peak disappear almost completely, the baseline remains virtually constant even withincreasing eluent concentrations.

The gradient system can be extended at any time toform a quaternary high-pressure gradient system.

The 819 IC Detector is the top-class conductivitydetector. It has been developed specially for ionchromatography with and without chemical suppression. It is able to reliably determine even very small signals against a very high background conductivity – up to 10 000 µS/cm. The 819 IC Detector is an integral part of the modularAdvanced Metrohm IC systems. The wet chemistrypart and the electronics are strictly separated.

The detector block with built-in measuring cell isthermally and electrically shielded against outsideinfluences. All signal lines – including those to theA/D converter – are specially shielded. A Faradaycage reliably prevents interference by electrosmog. The measuring cell is thermostatted and is charac-terized by its temperature stability of <0.01 °C. The temperature of the detector block can be setbetween 25 °C and 45 °C. Together with electronicpreamplification in the detector block, the 819 ICDetector offers the highest degree of sensitivity atan optimal signal-noise ratio. The measuring cell ismade from stainless steel; all supply lines are eitherof PEEK (version 0110) or stainless steel (version0010).

The electronic part of the detector processes the signal up to the analog output. Seven measuringranges are available. The full-scale range can be set in 11 steps between 0.05% and 100% of the measuring range, i.e. from measuring range/2000 to measuring range/1. In combination with theauto-zero function noise is reduced to an absoluteminimum (electronic noise <0.0003% of the select-ed measuring range).

The 819 IC Detector is remotely controlled by theMetrodata IC Net or IC Cap software. Application-oriented time programs and (remote-)control programs for the whole IC system and further peripheral devices form integral parts of the 819 ICDetector. If the detector is to be controlled directlyfrom a PC without the 830 IC Interface, then the6.2125.110 cable is required for the connection 819 IC Detector – PC (25/9).

The Metrohm 819 IC Detector offers you three pow-erful electronic possibilities of achieving an optimal signal-noise ratio. The measuring range isdetermined with «Range». If, for example, cationsare to be measured without chemical suppressionthen «Range» should be set to 0...1000 µS/cm. The «Auto Zero» function subtracts the backgroundconductivity and sets it electronically to 0 µS/cm. In addition, a special electronic noise suppressionfunction is activated. In order to record the meas-ured signal optimally, you now have the possibility of adapting «Full Scale» to your measuring signal. For example, you can set a «Full Scale» of 10 µS/cmeven though this signal is recorded against a back-ground of 600 µS/cm!

All functions can be called up or terminated at anytime during a chromatogram. The time program of the 819 IC Detector offers the greatest possibledegree of flexibility (see Application Note C-32).

Electrochemical (amperometric) detection with the791 IC-VA Detector is an extremely sensitive detec-tion method that is used successfully in both HPLCand ion chromatography. This method is also characterized by its very high selectivity: only easilyoxidizable or reducible substances are detected –chloride or sulfate are not detected and do notinterfere with the electrochemical determination, even when present at high concentrations.

The detector can be used in series or in parallel withother detectors which are normally used in IC orHPLC (e.g. conductivity or UV/VIS detectors).

Practical IC applications:• Azide• Nitrite• Chlorite• Sulfide• Iodide• Halogens• Thiocyanate• Thiosulfate• Cyanide

The 817 Bioscan extends the modular ion chroma-tography system from Metrohm by including carbo-hydrate analysis in the range of IC applications. Theheart of the 817 Bioscan is the pulsed amperometricdetector with built-in column oven. Control anddata acquisition are via the Metrodata IC Net soft-ware. As the A/D conversion takes place in the 817Bioscan, this means that no additional interface isnecessary.

In the modular IC system any modules can be com-bined with one another. This means that it is possi-ble to operate a stand-alone system with the pulsedamperometric detector 817 Bioscan; however, it canalso be incorporated in a standard IC system for thedetermination of anions and cations without anyproblems.

The expression «sugar analyzer» is actually too narrow as, apart from carbohydrates, the 817 Bio-scan can also be used to determine alcohols, sugaralcohols, sugar acids, polysaccharides and other oxidizable or reducible substances. The new Metro-sep Carb 1 separating columns play an importantrole here. They are particularly suitable for the deter-mination of carbohydrates using alkaline eluents andpulsed amperometric detection. They are very stableunder alkaline conditions and convinces with its out-standing separating properties.

817 Bioscan

The measuring cell of the 817 Bioscan and the insu-lated column oven form a single unit which is opti-mally protected against environmental influences. The three-electrode measuring principle is applied; a gold working electrode is used as standard.

Depending on the requirements, the detector can beoperated in the DC, scan or pulse mode. The pulsemode, in which three different working potentialsare applied in sequence, is used for the determina-tion of carbohydrates.

The compact and space-saving pump unit is com-patible with the Metrohm Advanced IC System andmany other HPLC and IC systems. Up to four pumpscan be combined to form a quaternary high-pressure gradient system.

The serial dual-piston pump with two valves guaran-tees top performance. The pressure is measured veryprecisely by piezoelectric means. Starting up thepump (priming) takes place reliably and quickly.Particular attention has been given to realizing longservice intervals. It is possible to enter upper andlower pressure limits in order to ensure the greatestdegree of safety for pressure-sensitive columns. The 818 IC Pump is completely remote-controlled bythe Metrodata IC Net software, in which all systemparameters can be defined simply and clearly.

833 Advanced IC Liquid Handling SuppressorUnit

The 833 IC Liquid Handling Suppressor Unit consistsof two units: • The 2-channel peristaltic pump for transporting

dilute sulfuric acid and water for regenerating and rinsing the suppressor

• The «MSM» Metrohm Suppressor Module itself, which is installed, for example, in the 820 ICSeparation Center.

Ion chromatography with Metrohm keeps two pathsopen: measurements with electronic suppressionand measurements with chemical suppression. Formeasurements with electronic suppression the out-standing electronic properties of the Metrohm 819IC Detector are utilized. These properties are alsoeffective for measurements at low background con-ductivity after chemical suppression. The «MSM»Metrohm Suppressor Module has been speciallydesigned for the analysis of anions, as suppressiononly achieves increased sensitivity in anion analysis.

The compact «MSM» Metrohm Suppressor Moduleworks with three suppressor units in a rotor. Onesuppressor unit is always in use, while the two oth-ers are being regenerated and rinsed respectively. Inthis way each chromatogram is recorded with afreshly regenerated suppressor and with an excellentreproducibility. The individual suppressors cannot bedistinguished from one another during the analysis.

The «MSM» is pressure-resistant up to 2 MPa. Higher pressures separate the two ceramic valvedisks of the «MSM» and leakage occurs. Work canbe continued as soon as the pressure returns to nor-mal values – the «MSM» again functions properly.

With the 828 IC Dual Suppressor Metrohm has solved the equation

1 + 1 = 3

This means that you buy two suppressors and actually receive three:

• one chemical suppressor• one CO2 suppressor, and • one electronic suppressor.

The continuous mode of operation of the 828 ICDual Suppressor allows gradient systems to be realized in a simple way. The H+ cations required foranion suppression are produced electrochemically. As the 828 IC Dual Suppressor is also able to elimi-nate CO2 this opens up a whole new field of appli-cations: the flexible carbonate/hydrogen carbonatesystem can be used to the full extent without anyrestrictions. The injection and carbonate peaks arereduced to an absolute minimum. Of course, the828 IC Dual Suppressor can also be used to suppressthe conductivity of concentrated sodium and potas-sium hydroxide eluents.

Together with the unique electronic suppression ofthe Metrohm 819 Conductivity Detector, extremelylow detection limits can be achieved. It is usuallypossible to dispense with large sample loops andsample preconcentration.

833 Advanced IC Liquid Handling SamplePreparation Unit

The unique Metrohm inline sample preparation system is the method of choice for eliminating difficult sample matrices in ion chromatography. The time-proven «MSM» technology is used with an increased capacity. The 833 IC Liquid HandlingSample Preparation Unit used for anion analysis incorporates the sample preparation steps directly in your IC system. This means that you can directlyand reliably analyze even difficult samples. A typicalexample is the determination of anions in concen-trated lyes.

Matrix elimination takes place «inline»; regenerationand rinsing are carried out in parallel «offline». The capacity of the 833 IC Liquid Handling SamplePreparation Unit is unlimited as the unit is automa-tically regenerated and rinsed after each determina-tion. The 833 IC Liquid Handling Sample PreparationUnit has been specially developed for inline samplepreparation with the 766 IC Sample Processor. It canalso be included in any other IC or HPLC systemwithout any problems.

The sample solution enters the module via a loopinjector and is rinsed with ultrapure water. In thisway the sample cations are exchanged, e.g. for protons (H+). If the sample is sodium hydroxide then water is formed by neutralization. The sampleis then transferred to the anion preconcentrationcolumn, where the trace anions to be determinedare held back, then elution again takes place withthe eluent in counterflow to transfer them to theseparating column itself where they are determined. Thanks to the high exchanger capacity even highconcentrations of cations can be reliably removed bythe 833 IC Liquid Handling Sample Preparation Unit.

The 833 IC Liquid Handling Sample Preparation Unitis controlled by the Metrodata IC Net software.

The 833 IC Liquid Handling Dialysis Unit is the sample preparation module for numerous demand-ing applications. The determination of anions incomplex matrices is no longer a problem with the833 IC Liquid Handling Dialysis Unit. Quantitativedetermination of anions is successful in, e.g.:

• Milk,• Fruit juice, • Soil eluates, • Suspensions,• Emulsions,• and many more samples.

Dialysis is neither filtration, nor extraction, nor digestion. In dialysis the ions – and not the largerparticles (>0.2 µm) – diffuse from the sample so-lution into the acceptor solution, so that a concen-tration equilibrium is obtained. This has the advan-tage that neither the sample nor the measured val-ues are affected by a filter cake. This also meansthat matrix effects are largely eliminated.

The dialysis membrane has a working life of up toone week. Large particles which could block themembrane are simply transported past it whereasions can pass unhindered through the membrane. The pore size is approx. 0.2 µm.

Calibration of the dialysis system requires no extraeffort. Recovery and dialysis rates are easy to determine and, with the patented «stopped flow»method, are in excess of 98%.

The 833 IC Liquid Handling Dialysis Unit can becompletely automated and is controlled by theMetrodata IC Net software.

Dialysis is a method for separating low-molecularsubstances from higher-molecular ones («colloids»)by means of a semi-permeable membrane. Thismethod is also known under the name of «bloodwashing» and is used by patients suffering fromchronic kidney insufficiency.

Low-molecular substances in blood are ions whichaffect the electrolyte equilibrium. If the kidney is notfunctioning properly then the concentration of theions in the blood will increase and the metabolicfunctions will be adversely affected. This means thatthe concentration of the ions must be reduced atregular intervals. This is carried out by dialysis usingthe «continuous flow» method:

An acceptor solution with a very low ionic strength– usually ultrapure water – is pumped past the semi-permeable membrane. The blood flows past theother side of the membrane. As the passage of theions through the membrane is virtually unhindered, they diffuse from the blood – which has a high ionicstrength – into the acceptor solution with its lowerionic strength. As the acceptor solution is perma-nently renewed and is in «continuous flow», theconcentration gradient is very steep and the effi-ciency is relatively high. Care is deliberately takenthat the two solutions do not form a concentrationequilibrium.

Sample preparation by dialysis tries to achieve theexact opposite: The acceptor solution and samplesolution must have the same concentration in orderto achieve correct results. For this reason Metrohmhas developed the patented «stopped flow»method. As in the «continuous flow» method,

the sample solution is continuously pumped past the semi-permeable membrane. The difference isthat the acceptor solution is at rest. This means thatan equilibrium can be established between sample solution and acceptor solution. Depending on thesample matrix and the amount of higher-molecularsubstances, this normally takes place in less than ten minutes in the new Metrohm dialysis cell.

Once the equilibrium has been achieved, the accep-tor solution is transferred to the sample loop andinjected. After a total of four steps – cleaning thesystem, dialysis of the sample, transferring theacceptor solution, injecting the sample – the dia-lysis of a sample is complete. This requires about 10 minutes. The valve control of the Metrohm ICsystem allows one sample to be measured while thenext one is already being dialyzed. This saves time.

The system, like every other IC system, is easy to cal-ibrate. The dialysis rate can be determined by com-paring direct injection and dialysis. It lies in therange between 97% and 99%. We recommend thata reference standard whose peak areas are known ismeasured every day. This allows the functioning ofthe system to be checked in an easy way.

Depending on the matrix, a membrane working lifeof one week or more than one hundred injectionscan be achieved.

«Stopped flow» methodAn equilibrium is established between the acceptor solution andthe sample solution.

«Continuous flow» methodThere is no concentration equilibrium between the acceptor solution and the sample solution.

Inline ultrafiltration is an important step on the wayto automated sample preparation in ion chromatog-raphy. Metrohm offers two different systems: the833 IC Liquid Handling Ultrafiltration Unit and the788 IC Filtration Sample Processor.

The 833 IC Liquid Handling Ultrafiltration Unit has a 2-channel peristaltic pump and the ultrafiltrationcell which, for example, is installed in the 820 ICSeparation Center.

In modern ion chromatography it is recommendedthat the sample is filtered before injection. This is toprevent very small particles from entering the sepa-rating column and blocking it. Normally membranefilters with pore sizes of 0.45 µm or less are used forthe filtration. However, the relatively high price ofsuch disposable filters limits their use, so that criticalsamples are often injected directly; this reduces theworking life of the column.

The solution is inline ultrafiltration: the sample solu-tion to be filtered flows past a membrane. At thesame time the filtrate is aspirated off from the rearside of the membrane, transferred to the sampleinjection valve of the ion chromatograph and theninjected. As only a small part of the sample is re-moved as filtrate, the majority of the contaminantsremain in the sample flow; this prevents the mem-brane from being blocked quickly.

The membrane filters supplied with the 833 ICLiquid Handling Ultrafiltration Unit have a pore sizeof 0.15 µm. You can also use any other membranewith a standard diameter of 47 mm in the ultrafiltra-tion cell. The number of samples which can beprocessed depends on the pore size and the proper-ties of the filter membrane. In general it can be saidthat an increase in the pore size results in anincrease of the working life. However, the probability thatmicroparticles will pass through the membrane and

Samples which either already contain gas bubbles orthose which release gas cannot be injected directly.Gas bubbles in the system affect the baseline, causepressure variations and result in poor reproducibility. This means that manual degassing must be includedas a sample preparation step.

This step can be automated with the 837 IC SampleDegasser (version 0020).

Before the sample reaches the injection valve it passesthrough a special Teflon-AF® capillary contained in avacuum chamber. The vacuum achieves the removalof even microscopically small gas bubbles, excess carbon dioxide or nitrogen. Time-consuming manualdegassing of the sample is no longer necessary.

The 837 IC Sample Degasser (version 0020) is equipped with a large-volume vacuum chamber and, for example, allows the direct determination of drinks containing carbon dioxide without any manual sample preparation.

Thanks to the electronically controlled vacuum pump, the 837 IC Sample Degasser runs extremely quietly.

To convert an IC Separation Center without col-umn heating (2.820.03X0) into one with columnheating (2.820.02X0), you need the 2.820.0500 IC Column Heating and the 6.5858.000 conversionkit. The conversion can only be performed byMetrohm service personnel.

The 820 IC Separation Center provides the thermaland electrical protection for the wet-chemistry partof an ion chromatography analysis. The stablepolyurethane housing ensures temperature stability;the electrically conducting lacquer finish and themetallic network incorporated in the housing pro-vide an affective shield against electromagnetic radi-ation.

All the analytical components, with the exception of the pumps, are contained in the IC SeparationCenter. Precolumns, separating columns, preconcen-tration columns, detectors, pulsation absorber, the«MSM» Metrohm Suppressor Module and valvestherefore work under steady and constant ambientconditions. The optimal shielding of the 820 ICSeparation Center guarantees the optimal signal-to-noise behavior of the measured values. The controlelectronics are located outside the 820 IC SeparationCenter and are therefore protected against mois-ture.

The latest Separation Center generation is availablewith a built-in column oven as an option. In thiscase two separating columns together with pre-columns are kept at a constant temperature whichcan be set from 30 °C to 70 °C. As the supply capil-laries are also located in the column oven this meansthat temperature gradients within the system arereliably avoided.

The 820 Separation Center is remotely controlled bythe Metrodata IC Net software.

The 2.820.0X10 version of the IC Separation Center is equipped with an electrically-operated 6-way injection valve made from PEEK. This versionis primarily intended for cation and anion analysiswithout chemical suppression.

The 2.820.0X20 version of the IC Separation Centeris equipped with two electrically operated 6-wayinjection valves made from PEEK. This version is pri-marily suitable for combined cation and anion analy-sis systems, for inline dialysis and for systems withinline sample preconcentration or inline matrix elimi-nation. If chemical suppression is to be used then the820 Separation Center can simply be extended byadding the 833 IC Liquid Handling Suppressor Unit(2.833.0020).

In addition to the electrical 6-way injection valvemade from PEEK, the 2.820.0X30 version of the ICSeparation Center also already contains the «MSM»Metrohm Suppressor Module. This is primarily usedfor chemical suppression in anion analysis. The three«micro packed bed» suppressors contained in a rotorare characterized by their high capacity, long workinglife and simple handling: one suppressor is in theanalytical circuit, the second is regenerated withdilute sulfuric acid, and the third is rinsed with deion-ized water. After each analysis the suppressor movesone step forward so that a freshly regenerated sup-pressor is always available. The reproducibility isexcellent – the individual suppressors cannot be dis-tinguished during the analysis.

The 812 Valve Unit is used for switching eluent flowsautomatically. It is available in two versions: Version2.812.010 has an electrically operated 6-way valve, version 2.812.020 has two of them. All valve partswhich come into contact with the eluent are madefrom PEEK.

The instrument is equipped with its own power supply and can therefore be operated independently. In combination with the 816 IC Eluent Selector, the 2-valve version can be used for automatically switch-ing between two columns with intermediate rinsing. When combined with the 2.812.0020 Valve Unit andthe 816 Eluent Selector, the 761 Compact IC can be extended to form a combined anion and cationsystem. The intermediate rinsing reliably prevents theanion eluent from entering the cation column andvice versa; this accelerates the achievement of equi-librium in the columns and has a positive effect ontheir working lives.

Together with the 817 Bioscan or the 791 IC-VADetector, the 812 Valve Unit can be used as the sys-tem injection valve. It can also be used in various sam-ple preparation techniques.

Seawater samples, brine samples, strongly sweetenedrefreshment drinks: whenever you encounter concen-trated samples there is the risk of the separating col-umn becoming overloaded and adversely affecting thequality of the analysis. Previously such solutions hadto be diluted, either manually, inline or with a specialdilution sample changer. Now there is a new solution:the «internal loop»!

In ion chromatography 10, 20 or 100 µL of the sample is injected as standard; in contrast, the internalloop only injects either 1.0 or 0.25 µL. For example, if the 0.25 µL loop is used then the injected volume is smaller than that injected with the standard 20 µLloop by the factor 80. This means that samples in theg/L concentration range can be injected undiluted.

The internal loop or the so-called rotor can be orderedindividually with sample volumes of 0.25 or 1.0 µL. Inorder to be able to use it, the rotor built into the stan-dard 6-way injection valve is simple exchanged, the 6-way stator remains unchanged. As only four open-ings of the 6-way stator are required for working with the internal loop, this means that two of its openings must be sealed. This is why a version with a special 4-way stator is also available. In this case the rotor (0.25 µL) and stator (4-way) of the standardvalve must be exchanged. The valve drive alwaysremains unchanged.

Changing the column with intermediate rinsingIf in an IC system an automatic change is to be made between two different separating systems (e.g.anions with suppression and cations without suppres-sion) then we recommend that the capillaries up tothe corresponding separating column are first rinsedwith water by the IC Eluent Selector, as otherwisesmall amounts of the previous eluent could enter thenew column. This would result in stabilization timeswhich are unnecessarily long and could also evendamage the column.

Automatic column changing with intermediate rinsing can be realized with the help of an 812 ValveUnit with two 6-way valves (2.812.0020).

816 IC Eluent Selector

The 816 IC Eluent Selector opens up new possibilities;these include step gradients.

With the 816 IC Eluent Selector the range of ion chromatography applications as well as the possibili-ties for automation have been considerably extended. The instrument selects one of three different solutions(eluents) with switching taking place either manuallyor automatically by using the Metrodata IC Net soft-ware. A few of these numerous applications are briefly described below.

Rinsing the IC system without manual solutionchangingIt is possible to rinse the ion chromatography systemwithout having to change the solutions manually byswitching to the rinsing solution. This prevents con-tamination of the eluent. If the rinsing step is to becarried out without the separating column then thismust be removed from the system before switchingtakes place. This can be done manually or by using an additional 6-way valve (e.g. 2.812.0010 Valve Unit).

Changing the eluent The 816 IC Eluent Selector allows eluents to be changed automatically. After equilibrium has beenachieved it is then possible to work with the same col-umn at a different selectivity. Programming in IC Netis carried out by a corresponding switching system inthe sequence.

Step gradientChanging the eluent can also take place within a single chromatogram. This means that it is possible to run a step gradient. In this way even analytes withvery different retention behaviors can be determinedin a single run. An example of such an application isthe simultaneous determination of inorganic anions as well as different carboxylic acids in fruit juices, alcoholic beverages or infusion solutions.

Gas bubbles in eluents produce an unstable baselineas high-pressure pumps for ion chromatography can transport liquids but not gases. This is why it is advisable to degas eluents before use.

This can be done by using a water-jet vacuum pump or safely and quickly with the 837 IC EluentDegasser.

The degasser module is simply included between the eluent and the IC pump. The eluent then flowsthrough the special Teflon-AF® capillary, which islocated in a vacuum chamber. The vacuum removeseven microscopically small gas bubbles, excess car-bon dioxide or nitrogen. Time-consuming manualeluent degassing is no longer necessary.

A powerful setup: one vacuum pump (P) evacuates three degasserunits.

Gas bubbles in eluents produce an unstable baselineas high-pressure pumps for ion chromatography can transport liquids but not gases. This is why it is advisable to degas eluents before use. A very simi-lar problem is encountered when samples whichalready contain gas bubbles or which could releasegas are to be measured. In such cases it is also necessary to remove the gas phase first.

Both the degassing of the eluents and the degassingof the samples can be carried out manually e.g. witha water-jet vacuum pump or fully automatically withthe 837 IC Eluent Degasser (version 0030).

The degasser module is simply included between the eluent and IC pump or between the sample andthe injection valve. The eluent and sample then flowthrough the special Teflon-AF® capillaries which arelocated in separate vacuum chambers. Filtration of the sample is intended to prevent smallparticles from entering the separating column andblocking it. Normally membrane filters with poresizes of 0.45 µm or less are used for the filtration. However, the relatively high price of such disposablefilters limits their use, so that critical samples areoften injected directly; this reduces the working lifeof the column. The 788 IC Filtration Sample Pro-cessor incorporates membrane filtration as a samplepreparation step directly in your IC system.

The samples are placed directly on the sample rackand then processed fully automatically by the 766 IC Filtration Sample Processor. The sample solutionto be filtered flows underneath a membrane fromwhose upper surface the filtrate is aspirated off atthe same time, transferred to the sample injectionvalve of the ion chromatograph and then injected.

The membrane filters supplied with the instrumenthave a pore size of 0.15 µm. You can also use anyother membrane with a standard diameter of 47 mm in the ultrafiltration cell.

Ultrafiltration using the 788 IC Filtration SampleProcessor (version 0010) is particularly suitable forsamples with a low to medium loading, e.g. drink-ing water, surface and waste water, digestion solu-tions, extracts, etc. Uncontaminated samples can beinjected directly with the same sample changer, i.e.without filtration.

Samples with a very high loading, e.g. fruit juicescontaining fruit pulp, should be prepared by usinginline sample dialysis with the IC Dialysis FiltrationSample Processor (version 0020), where the mem-brane is subjected to far less stress than in inline filtration.

The sample rack offers places for 127 x 11mL or 127 x 2.5 mL sample tubes. Two additionalrinsing positions ensure crossover-free sample injec-tion even with very different sample matrices. Theultrafiltration cell as well as the dialysis cell are madefrom Plexiglas. This has the advantage that the con-dition of the cell can always be assessed visually.

Apart from ultrafiltration and dialysis, the 788 ICFiltration Sample Processor can also be used for allother sample changer tasks as a matter of course,i.e. you can use it for direct injections, inline samplepreconcentration and inline matrix elimination. Thisprovides you with practically unlimited possibilitiesfor the automation of your ion chromatographyanalyses.

Automationhelps to reduce your running costs. Automation alsohelps to improve the precision of your determina-tions even further. Previously the initial automationstep was frequently accompanied by very high costs. This cost factor was also one of the reasons whymany applications, which could and should havebeen carried out with ion chromatography, wereoften done using other, less suitable methods.Metrohm has now put an end to this: Today everylaboratory can afford an ion chromatograph.

Metrohm has now taken the second step by intro-ducing a sample changer which enables any ionchromatography system to be automated – withonly a moderate investment being required.

Some details of the 813 Compact IC Autosampler:This sample changer can – with the exception of the792 Basic IC – be operated with any Metrohm ionchromatograph. It works hand in hand with the 790 Personal IC, the 761 Compact IC andthe modular Metrohm IC systems. Each sample solution can be injected up tothree times. The sample rack of the 813Compact IC Autosampler has space for max. 36 samples. Polypropylenesample tubes with a volume of 11 or 2.5 mL are available; these can behermetically sealed with a stopper. The built-in peristaltic pump trans-fers the sample to the injectionvalve.

The «run»-«com» information for starting datarecording is also transmitted to the Metrodata IC Net software. Two channels can be recordedindependently.

The Metrodata IC Net software carries out the con-trol of all the instruments and ensures their inter-action: from the system pressure up to deliberatelyaddressing a single sample on the sample changer.Pictograms ensure clarity. New systems can be puttogether quickly and simply. More than 100 systemconfigurations are already preinstalled and can becalled up with a mouse-click.

The integration software satisfies all demands: ver-satile integration and calibration modes, batch pro-cessing and reprocessing, database functions, manu-al peak integration, statistics functions, report gen-erator, simple data export, various safety levels andcomprehensive GLP functions are only some of thepossibilities offered by the Metrodata IC Net soft-ware. The Metrodata IC Net software is compatiblewith FDA 21 CFR Part 11 as a matter of course (with Windows™ 2000 or XP).

The Metrodata IC Net software is included in theprice of the corresponding instrument.

The software which makes ion chromatographyeven easier. Even complex systems can be operatedin a very comfortable way. The principle: The ICexpert can configure the IC system in the usual way.IC Cap forms an additional user interface on top of the Metrodata IC Net software. The user will thenonly see the controls which are absolutely necessary. In the simplest case these are two buttons marked«Start» and «Stop». This means that technicians canoperate the IC system reliably after only a short peri-od of training. The Administrator is solely responsi-ble for deciding what is to be shown and what canbe operated.
