In early autumn London theatres positively crackle with activity. Itsprime time for
producers; if they can get a play established in town now, its got a much better chance of a
covered long run. But, no matter what the season, no matter what the stake, its a risky game.
The odds may be against success; still you can betyoure in for a great time!

Will the musical version of..(1) based on Jules Vernes classic take the crowds
fancy?...A gamble! But nothing succeeds like a popular musical! Thats the case of (2)
which has indisputably become one of the worlds most popularmusicals, having captured the
imagination and enthusiasm of the theatre-going public and is stillplaying to full houses.
This dramatized episode from the French revolution is one of the most fabulous
accomplishments of its kind that Ive ever seen. Not to mention the unforgettable Gavroche!
So what kind of show could be more successful than a musical? Maybe a thriller! I remember
almost hanging from a chandelier to watch the smash hit(3), a modern rendering
of the old vampire story. It wasstanding room only throughout the year! Another thriller that
has been a great success.(4) adapted from Charlotte Brontes novel, is one of
the most famous love stories based on the romantic notion of the attraction of opposites. The
show is terrific anyway, packed with action and suspense.
If you are after the great classics, there is always a brand new version of Shakespeares
timeless works. So why not choose.(5), the tragedy of Man trying to find an
answer to the eternal questions of Life and Death? Or, even better the magical entertainment
of comedy with(6), an open air performance which sparkles with
extravagant dream-like fantasy and inspired music.
IV You will be divided in groups and each group will receive a picture with a character from
a play. Discuss the picture focusing on the folowing aspects of the person portrayed:
1. How old might that person be?2. What might her job be?3. Familiy circumstances (married, single, etc.)?4. Hobbies, favourite colour, food, sports, etc.5. Where does the person come from?6. What do you think she/he does every day?7. What kind of personality does he/she have?8. Would you like to be this person?
The characters are from The Glass Menagerieby Tennessee Williams andLook Back in
Angerby John Osborne. Google the plays and see if you were right about the characters.
