Did you see this accidentTwo weeks ago my car was parked on Colsterworth High Street and was hit twice The gentleman in the first car had the courtesy to leave his full details and I would like to thank him for being honest

The second person did not leave any details She spoke to some people at the time and said she would come back after dropping her kids at school But she never did All we have is a partial registration number R618 on a silver car possibly a Ford

If you were the driver or know her please contact me because I want to sort out the repairs and find out her insurance company details

Eric Goodyer 78 High Street01476 862120 egdmuacuk

Looking forward to meeting you all A letter of introduction from our new priest Eric Lomax

It seems a long time since my inter-view in November I was delighted

to be appointed as your priest and it is my hope we may work together to build a community of compassion and prayer I realise that there are a lot of expectations Some will be realistic and some completely unachievable ndashwe should probably leave the mira-cles to God who can act whether I am there or not

Let me give you a few words of in-troduction I am married to Liz who is head of music in a Church of England school in York Several of our children are taking exams this year so Liz is stay-ing there and continuing to work in her present school she will join me in July Shersquos looking for a new school in Lin-colnshire to start in September I have been serving at All Saints and Saint Philips Osmondthorpe during their interregnum and a group from Saint Maryrsquos Church Whitkirk will be coming to my licensing ndash I have been officiat-

ing there for nearly two yearsOne of my interests is work with

young people I am a qualified teacher and was a youth worker for some years I see outreach to young people as an important part of the Churchrsquos minis-try and I will certainly look for ways of doing this in and around the Colster-worth group We have to explore what the Christian Gospel has to say to the young people around us Christ is here for all regardless of age and culture I am also aware much is already hap-pening with young people in our com-munities there are youth clubs schools and uniformed organisations With your permission I see involvement in these areas of work as a priority

When I arrive I am sure that there is much that you would like to talk to me about There is plenty of time for that but if at any time you wish to speak to me then call in I will try to make myself available or arrange to call at a better time

I pray that we will work together to build a Church that enriches the lives of everyone in the community This I

hope will have prayer at its centre and an openness to everyone who needs help or the touch of Christ in their lives

God bless I lookforward to meeting you

Eric

Sir

I have not cared for Pantomime since my mother took me to see Jack and

the Beanstalk at Leeds Grand Theatre when I was six years old I found the cross dressing puzzling the jokes beyond me and the noisy giant intimi-dating

So even though I have seen some superb shows by Newton Players I didnrsquot think of going to see Treasure Island this year However Debbie Lav-ender encouraged me and Joy Isaac offered to drive me to the Village Hall After nearly 80 years I have changed my mind I enjoyed every minute

The whole performance was first rate and the actors seemed to be en-joying themselves too The children at the front were almost climbing on the stage in delight - a lot of very hard work had gone into the productionI hope I am offered a lift next year

Womenrsquos Institute report

The snow which was promised by the Met Office for our January

meeting finally arrived just in time for our February meeting Fortunately the hall was as warm as toast thanks to the previous amnesic hirer

It was good to see our President Mary Cowley back in the chair giving Vice-President Rosemary Bolongaro the afternoon off following her four months deputising while Mary was in hospital

Our business included final travel arrangements for the Spring Council Meeting at Spalding and details of the Home Economics Group meeting at Grantham Tickets priced at pound3 will be on sale at the March meeting

We heard details of various events to be held in the forthcoming months the Resolutions Discussion evening at Great Hale prior to the National Fed-eration AGM at Cardiff a quiz evening at Quadring and a Japanese-themed evening at Surfleet Oh yes and a trin-

Tinged with sadness we started our first meeting for 2010 remembering

yet another former member George Flint George was a member for many years and also a keen allotment holder although he had not been an active member of late - but at 93 that was to be expected He will be sadly missed

Even though the weather was bitterly cold and we had snow during the day we still managed to have a good turn-out for our local speaker Geoff Espin assisted by his wife Gwen who took us around Europe with their wonderful photographs of wild orchids Starting in England and visiting Spain the French Alps Italy and Cyprus we finished in Bavaria There is no need howeverto travel that far afield to find wild orchids

as we have a number on our doorstep Chestnut Grove in Colsterworth has a superb display on the verge as does the Nature Reserve at South Witham and yet more to be found in Twyford Wood - so keep your eyes peeled

Subscriptions are now due and we were pleased to welcome seven new members which is a great start to the new year but we would still like more so why not come and give us a try on the 8th March when our speaker will be Graham Jackson from the Leicester amp Leicestershire Guild of Horticultural Show Judges who will advise us on How to do well at the Village Show which will hopefully spur you on for September

Donrsquot forget your Flower of the Month it was won by Peter Smith this month with a lovely Hellebore Gillian will be hosting the Bottle Stall for which she would be grateful for any dona-tions So 8th March Village Hall 730pm see you there

A book and a bacardi

Our local hostelry is starting up a Book Exchange

To get off to a good start Madeleine is looking for some decent books to fill the shelves She tells me that ldquodecentrdquo refers to the age and state of the books although a degree of censorship of the content might be applied in extreme circumstances So donrsquot take along the novels yoursquore too embarrassed to take to the tip

Therersquos to be no charge so why not nip in to the White Lion nab a novel and a nip and navigate your way home again Alternatively pick a Pulitzer Prize winner and a pint pull up a chair and pass the time in perfect idleness

With the continuing frozen condi-tions most reports coming in

have been on birds Good to hear of several barn owls In particu-lar a pair was seen at dusk catch-ing prey in the area in which they are known to nest Four yellowhammers unusual garden visi-tors were reported from two gardens near enough for them to be the same birds The same gardens also had a blackcap in each The importance of a network of gardens where birds are fed regularly is also demonstrated along the Woolsthorpe Road where a party of twelve goldfinches has a regular routine moving west from one Nyger feeder to another Filling in the RSPB Garden Survey can be frustrating as regulars fail to turn up in the hour chosen Nevertheless some did turn up in numbers at the allotted time - 25 house sparrows 16 chaffinches eight blackbirds and six jackdaws for instance

There were also three notable large flocks About 150 rooks gathered on telegraph wires and trees near the Stainby crossroads Over 40 gold-finches came to rest briefly in a gar-den one early morning and in the fog a dog walker noted a field white with gulls which had come from the waste tips The most exciting find this year was of two waxwings in a garden

Evidence of mammals has been so to speak second-hand A badger and several rabbits were killed on the road After the snow a rash of mole-hills has been thrown up on verges where in the thin soils over limestone the moles have to work hard to find enough earthworms Nobody has reported hearing a fox howling dur-ing the mating season previously a regular record Just one hare seen out as well as the usual rabbits but two common voles regularly feed in a gar-

den where they can be watched from a window

A few hazels were showing pollen by the end of January but these were in positions where they were unu-sually sheltered The first record ldquoin the wildrdquo was on Stamford road on 19th February when the minute red tassels of the female flowers were also found A single Lesser Celandine just made it for this bulletin on the same day Many of our roadside bushes and trees are covered with the orange shield lichen which thrives on dust and amongst them was a grey lichen which was forming a tuft the size of a golf ball

In the freezing conditions it has been amazing to discover any insects at all except for winter gnats dancing above puddles of melting ice Of the two moths seen as coming to a light-ed window one was the Angle Shades Moth which can be on the wing al-most any month of the year and the other was a winter specialist the Early Moth whose females are wingless It lays its eggs on hawthorn blackthorn and a variety of other shrubs and the caterpillars pupate in May in a flimsy silk cocoonTo Look For In March

The first three migrants likely to set-tle in our parishes are the chiffchaff the blackcap and the willow warbler All are described by birders as LBJrsquos (little brown jobs) because they have unremarkable plumage However they have distinctive songs which herald the spring Amphibians will be coming out of hibernation so there should be records of frogs newts and toads Any reports of plants or ani-mals of interest would be particularly welcome from Stainby Gunby and South Witham

ket box workshop to be held at County headquarters Sleaford Any members wishing to attend any of these events let me know as soon as possible

The President then welcomed our guest speaker Jane Barnes of South-fields Farm Somerby who told us of her familyrsquos work on their dairy farm A job 365 days of the year milking the 110 Friesians and 41 Ayrshires with all of the milk (over 2000 litres a day) going to Long Clawson Dairies to make Stilton Cheese So the informa-tion that we received prior to her visit wasnrsquot quite right We thought that she was going to tell us how to make the cheese and we never even got a sniff of it Nevertheless she is a very busy lady giving talks under the Defra um-brella sometimes three times a week and ferrying two teenagers about too She told us of the intensive farming in America where cows never see a field and said that the practise has now spread to England and a 9000 herd is scheduled to come to Lincolnshire It doesnrsquot bear thinking about the ro-botic labour the expense and the poor cows never having the sun on their backs What a price to pay for milk

Refreshments were served by Bar-bara Moore courtesy of Taylors of Har-rogate who once again have sent the Institute a box of teabags and each member a newsletter which included coupons for tea cake and coffee

Bett won the competition for a cheeseboard with Barbara in second place Dora Farley manned the sales table and Mary Stedman collected the tea and raffle money

Nominations were accepted cast for the new committee (to be decided at our next meeting the AGM on 18th March in the Village Hall at the usual time of 2 orsquoclock)

Our guest speaker will be Anne Tear from the Federation Office Come and hear what we have been up to in the last twelve months and maybe you will be inspired to join us Visitors are most welcome and we have a super new programme for the coming year

Sightings and information to 860465 magdontiscalicouk or 61 Wool-sthorpe Road please

Jane Ostler

ket box workshop to be held at County headquarters Sleaford Any members wishing to attend any of these events let me know as soon as possible
