It is not often I get an email from Helen Russell, the Chair of theRSCDS in Edinburgh. However, I did receive one from her last month. Shewas complimenting us on our outreach to the Whitehorse Scottish CountryDance Society. Some time back, Fran Caruth, our Dance Coordinator wasinvited by that group to fly there and organize a workshop. Both Fran andKatherine Shearman took the weekend off and flew into Whitehorse, taughtthe teachers, taught a class, and in the evening, they all had a Ceilidh. By allaccounts, a great time was had by all.

The RSCDS in Edinburgh is keen to promote our activity the worldover and so in our patch on the West Coast, are we. That’s why for manyyears, we have hosted Teacher Training and Exams for the clubs andsocieties in the Pacific North West. Although only two of last year’s seventeacher candidates came from the Lower Mainland, we felt that it was ourobligation to the larger community to spread the activity as far as we could. You never know when we may welcome a teacher, trained elsewhere, intoour dancing community.

On that theme, I am indebted to Hamish Jackson for drawing myattention to a matching fund initiative announced in our magazine fromScotland. The RSCDS will match any proposal that receives approval to holdan outreach event in your community aimed at teaching SC dancing to peoplewho are not dancers , encouraging young people to enjoy SC dancing, orraising the profile of Scottish dance locally - to the tune of £250 - that’s about$440 . It would be great to see at least one local club come up with a projectthat would qualify. You can find details at:

https://www.rscds.org/news/matched-funding-initiativePut your thinking caps on! Having missed the magazine article, I went ontothe rscds.org website myself and found a page about available scholarships, mostly aimed at younger dancers but some with no restrictions which are wellworth a peek. Here are two links to look at.

https://www.rscds.org/article/jean-milligan-memorial-fund-jmmfand https://www.rscds.org/article/scholarships-2

Sadly that deadline for Summer School Scholarships 2018 has passed (inNovember) but there’s always next year. You also do need to be sponsoredby the Vancouver branch to qualify. So there’s another tangible benefit tojoining the branch.

Lastly don’t forget our Heather Ball - March 17th with MurielJohnstone, Ian Robertson & Judi Nicolson and the Concert on the Sunday.

Betwixt & BetweenDancing News & Photos

t

The Betwixt & Between held, on December 28th, saw visitors from WashingtonState, Vancouver Island, Quebec, Saskatchewan, Inverness (Scotland) andNewfoundland. Thanks to the generosity of Mary Wattum, admission was free toRSCDS members and three full-time students. Thanks to the catering committeeunder Denise Cunningham and Sandy Anderson and everyone who broughtgoodies, the feast at intermission was amazing. It kept everyone energized for thedance program of both familiar and new dances for all levels. Mary Ross playedincredible dance sets that raised our spirits and our feet, keeping a large numberof dancers on the floor until the end of the night. I look forwarded to the traditionof the Betwixt &Between on December 28, 2018. Katherine Shearman

The Burns Supper, coordinated by Sandy and Sally Marshall, was a sell outwith 193 tickets sold - thanks to the efforts of Mary Anne Mackay and all theteachers. We also had a special guest, Nicole Davison, the British ConsulGeneral. Simon Scott, the MC during the supper portion, did a great job inkeeping everything running smoothly. The evening started with a resplendentcolour party marching behind piper Sandy Marshall to bring in the haggis.Hamish Jackson gave the Address to the Haggis adding some very unusualreferences to TimHorton’s and theWhite Spot. JanetMason gave theSelkirk Grace with herfine Scottish accent, and Gillian Beattiegave the Toast to theQueen with her fineEnglish accent. Stensgaard was well received singing his way through the Immortal Memory.Katherine Shearman and Alison Moen devised a very enjoyable danceprogramme that catered to both dancers and non-dancers. They also briefedthe dances along with Fran Caruth. The Tartan Players’ music was awonderful addition to the evening. The Branch Demonstration Team, underthe direction of Kay Sutherland, performed twice during the evening and hadthe audience chuckling at the unexpected appearance of “horses” in the finale. The evening was a great success thanks to the very many people whovolunteered their time and talents in various ways.
