Indie Lens Pop-Up is a neighborhood series that brings people together for free film screenings and community-driven conversations.

We kicked off this season’s Indie Lens Pop-Up at Impact Hub Honolulu in the Kaka‘ako neighborhood last month with a screening of The First Rainbow Coalition (the Independent Lens film premieres on PBS Hawai‘i on Monday, January 27 at 10:00 pm). After the screening, about 35 attendees shared their thoughts on the film and spoke of

the work that they are currently doing in our communities to create change.

The film was the first in a series of screenings that we will be hosting through May 2020 in partnership with Hawai‘i People’s Fund at Impact Hub Honolulu.

Four-Star Rating from Charity Navigator!

I sometimes feel like Forrest Gump when I open my office mail. It’s like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re going to get.

Look inside and there may be notice of a snag in funding, a delay in expected tech equipment, or a demand for the retraction of a statement made on a television program not even carried by this station.

The other day, opening the mail was all joy – like finding a dark chocolate truffle, my favorite. Among the notes, viewer P.F. hand-wrote: “You have the best television programming in Hawai‘i … Keep up the excellent work!” Viewer G.H. wrote, “You rocked my world with that NOVA special!”

And the sweetest chocolate of all in the mailbag: a formal letter from the head of the data-driven national nonprofit analyst Charity Navigator, informing us that we’d once again attained the best overall score possible – four out of four stars.

The company’s President and CEO, Michael Thatcher, let us know that the company had assessed our financial health as strong. And we scored a perfect 100% rating in accountability and transparency.

Great news! It’s truly important to us to steward operations and funding, and to make forward-thinking,

strategic decisions. I share the four-star news with you, because it is our wonderful donors and supporters who placed PBS Hawai‘i in this solid position. Thank you! We’re mindful that you voluntarily give to support our programming and services, and it fills the heart.

Our Board of Directors and Staff take nothing for granted. After all, each year brings to most nonprofit organizations headwinds of some kind – whether they be economic, programmatic, legal or political.

The moment a humpback whale breached near wildlife filmmaker Tom Mustill and his friend Charlotte Kinloch.

Imagine sitting in a kayak at sea, looking up, and seeing approximately 60,000 pounds of whale coming at you. Amazingly, the kayakers – wildlife filmmaker Tom Mustill and his friend Charlotte Kinloch – lived to tell the tale. And it became Mustill’s mission to understand why the traumatic incident took place.

It happened in 2015. A 30-ton humpback whale breached in Monterey Bay, California, and just missed landing on the duo in the kayak.

Viral videos recorded by witnesses left Mustill questioning whether the whale was deliberately trying to cause harm – or trying not to.

How can you get that close to something that big with that much power and not die?

Mustill met with scientists, a whale expert, a whale tracker, a group dedicated to disentangling whales from fishing gear debris and individuals who survived similar close encounters with whales. He chronicles his inquiry in NATURE: The Whale Detective, premiering on PBS Hawai‘i on Wednesday, January 8 at 8:00 pm.

Mustill found that though we’ve observed the ways that whales splash – tail throw, tail slap, chin slap, pec slap and breach – we don’t know what prompts these behaviors. While his investigation enabled him to come up with a plausible reason for why the whale breached so close to him and Kinloch, it is only a theory.

But Mustill’s search did uncover interesting observations and discoveries about whales and greater questions about humans’ relationship with whales and their future.

Here in Hawai‘i, we know that whales were considered by Native Hawaiians to be sacred. Called koholā, the whales were believed to be the majestic animal form of the Hawaiian ocean god Kanaloa. Ali‘i wore necklaces adorned with whale teeth and bone.

There are locations around the Islands associated with whales, including Pu‘ukoholā Heiau located in Kawaihae, Hawai‘i Island; northwest Kaho‘olawe; Palaoa Hill, Lāna‘i; and Olowalu, Maui.

Noteworthy Facts:

• Humpback whales have no teeth. They can barely nibble you, let alone swallow you. Their throats are only slightly larger than a human throat.

• Inside a humpback’s pectoral fins are the biggest arms on the planet.

• Over the past 40 years, the number of North Pacific humpbacks has increased from 1,000 to nearly 23,000, with as many as 14,000 migrating to Hawai‘i each winter.

• Historically, humpbacks travel more than 3,000 miles from the Gulf of Alaska to Hawai‘i, and may be seen in Hawaiian waters from November through May. Peak sightings are generally from January to March.
