Photographers’ showcaseFollowing a Monarch Habitat
Workshop in Sioux Narrows, many who attended that courseare now helping to save theMonarchs. This one, found as aminiscule egg (only the size ofa pin head) under the leaf of aMilkweed plant, was firstraised as a caterpillar, the sizeof this small letter ‘ i “. Overthe past month, that caterpillarwent through incredible trans-formations, until it’s emergencehere, as a butterfly! Only a fewseconds young, and still cling-ing to its’ chrysalis, it was bornas an ‘ADULT’ butterfly onAug. 7th! Fascinating! It soonwas feasting on nectar flowers,to prepare for its’ long journeysouth, to overwinter in the inte-rior of Mexico. Lightweight, and on paper-thin wings, thisMonarch will soon begin aflight south, of over 2400miles, with no adult butterfly toguide it! Females born here in2014, should later lay hundredsof eggs in the spring of 2015,when they begin to fly northagain….but only if Milkweedcan be found! Milkweed is anabsolute “MUST’ for all Mon-archs; they won’t survive with-out it!

Emo Fair packed with people having a ball
By: Teresa HazelThe Rainy River Valley Agri-
cultural Society once again puton a great three days of funduring this year’s 114th fall
fair.Many hours of volunteer
work happens for manymonths to ensure the Emo Fairgoes off without a hitch every
year. From the Emo FairQueen pageant to stock carraces and from midway ridesto parades, with livestock con-tests, exhibition hall set-upand horse races all added in,
the fall fair has something foreveryone.
Congratulations to this year’sfeatured family, the Tom andShirley Morrish family whogrew up with the annual fairbeing a huge part of their lives.Their involvement with the fairtook on many roles from ex-hibiting their livestock, gardenproduce and baking to becom-ing involved as 4-H leaders andvolunteers. Their six childrenalso participated in the fair be-ginning back in the 1970’s andcarried on the tradition ofshowing their 4-H calves, steers and Galloway cattle.Tom and Shirley put in count-less hours every year setting upthe exhibition hall at the farmprogress building and help withthe arduous task of clean-upafter the event. Their dedica-tion and love for kids and ani-mals is evident and they bothare committed to continuingtheir involvement “for as longas time allows”.
Congratulations also to thisyear’s Emo Fair royalty thatsaw Kassidy LeDrew crowned2014 Emo Fair Queen. FirstPrincess was Elizabeth Allanand Joleigh Hayes was namedsecond princess. Mini-Kingwas Benjamin Latter and ReeceWiersema was crowned Mini-Queen.
To those who took home redribbons for their exhibits in thefarm progress building, welldone and to the 4-H memberswho were awarded prizes fortheir livestock, good job. To allthe winners in the Beef andDairy Cattle Show and theHorse Show, great effort.
There were also many inter-
esting items at the Emo Arenawhere over 120 exhibitorsshowcased their products andservices.
To those who came out toplay some dabber bingo or lis-ten to The Fugitives play theirbrand of Old Time Music onthe small stage, hope you hadfun.
Whether you came out towatch the parade with its ‘GoLocal’ theme on Saturday after-noon or headed over to theGrandstand to watch the ReaMemorial Stock Car Races, the
family-centred fair was a lot offun. The delight in childrensfaces as they hopped on therides and played games at themidway was evident, and, ohyes, there was plenty of foodand refreshments - candy ap-ples, those yummy minidonuts, sno-cones and, ofcourse, corn dogs and fries!
So, to all of the volunteerswho work hard every year tomake the annual fall fair hap-pen – thank you. Your effortsare very much appreciated byeveryone!
From l. Daelyn and Serena Teeple were joined by theircousins, Norah and Carmen Meeks who came in from Dry-den for the fair. They were sitting in the Grandstand waitingfor the parade to arrive.

And another Emo Fair hascome and gone! It actuallymakes me kind of sad. It al-ways seems that once the Fairis over, Fall arrives ratherquickly. What a great week-end we had. Despite the crazyhot day on Friday (likely ourhottest day in 2014) – it was awonderful weekend. I man-aged to get my cattle there, and made a few things for theexhibition hall. I hope that Imake enough in prize $ to paymy annual membership fee! Iam very proud of Maddie andMarlee – they did such a greatjob with their calves. It isamazing how much they haveimproved and how much moreconfident they have become.Marlee’s heifer knocked herdown twice and I was worriedshe would be upset and quitbut she brushed herself off andkept going. Marlee ended up1st with her heifer and Maddie2nd. Shane met Marlee in thebarn and said “gee that is toobad your heifer wasn’t behav-ing” – she replied “that’s o.k.,he liked mine best!” Charlieand Levi (the twins from Dry-den) did a great job showingtheir calves – Charlie andLevi. Levi did give Levi a run
for his money – but he hungon tight despite his hat fallingright over his eyes.
The 4-H classes went welland with the weather being abit cooler Saturday a.m. thecattle behaved very well. Wehad a wonderful group ofsteers. History was made withsisters Morgan and JessicaHaw with Grand and ReserveChampions followed by broth-ers Timothy and Leroy Rem-pel. Morgan and Jessica werealso our Grand and ReserveChampion showmen as well.A big thank you to all thathelped to make our 4-H Showand Sale such a great success!Special thanks to Telford Ad-vent for stepping in on shortnotice to sell our steers – wecertainly appreciated this.
The Rainy River HerefordAssociation sold every lastticket on their $500 beef pack-age or $500 cash – first time ina long time that happened. The winner was a stock cardriver from Thunder Bay andI will publish the name nextweek. Guess the weight is al-ways a popular event and thisyear our orphan steer Dudleywas the candidate to guess the
weight on. Dudley is now ayear and half old but still niceand quiet for people to be vis-iting throughout the Fair.Dudley weighed 1070 lbs andEltjo Weirsema was the lucky“guesser!” Dudley enjoyedhis weekend.
Often we have a cattle salethe weekend following theEmo Fair but this year wedon’t so it looks like we willpack up our cattle and head offto the Dryden Fair. Maddieand Marlee are very excited todisplay their heifer calves totheir Dryden Grandma andGrandpa and cousins! So thedragging isn’t over yet!
My students have only 2weeks left at the station. Thismakes me sad as well. Be-cause of our late start it isn’tlooking good to having muchof the plots combined and inthis year. I have a whole lot ofwork ahead of me and I willlikely have to find someone tohelp!
The next cattle sale is Sep-tember 6th – get in touch withJames Gibson if you have cat-tle or questions. James # is807-487-2731 or 807-271-2005.
First of all I want to ac-knowledge Christie and Janetfor marching in the Emo FairParade.
I notice in many instancesthat Colour Parties are gettingsmaller and the average agelooks like it is getting older. The Legion needs new bloodnot only in Colour Parties butalso on their Executive. Theonly way we will succeed is ifour members step forward and
join in the daily workings. The same faces doing every-
thing are getting burnt out.Barb had a successful burger
night last Friday so this Friday
she is having a smokie, hotdog and macaroni salad night,

Excellent action during Rea Memorial Fall Fair Races at Emo Speedway
By: Anthony LeekThe weather was beautiful
for two days of the biggest rac-ing event in Northwestern On-tario as the Borderland RacingAssociation hosted the AnnualRea Memorial Races at theRainy River Valley Agricul-tural Society’s 114th AnnualFall Fair.
WISSOTA Modifieds, WIS-SOTA Midwest Modifieds, and Emo Street Stocks took tothe track in the biggest fieldsof 2014 as drivers from Mani-toba, Thunder Bay and theUnited States centred theirsights on the biggest prize ofthe year, the two day pointtotal of the Rea MemorialChampionship. DefendingChampions, Jamie Davis inthe WISSOTA Modifieds,Christopher Leek in the WIS-SOTA Midwest Modifieds, and Cody Wall in the EmoStreet Stocks were all in atten-
dance to race it out once again. On Friday night, Davis set
the tone like usual at the eventby clean sweeping the night bywinning the heat and feature. While the heat race was rela-tively easy, Davis had to makea pass on Justin Jones of Be-midji, Minnesota on the lastlap and won by only a couplefeet in an exciting side by sidebattle. In the WISSOTA Mid-west Modifieds, Brady Caulmarched quickly to the frontfrom his outside pole positionto repeat his Friday win from2013. Defending championLeek broke the right front balljoint forcing his first DNF ofthe year and conceding theseason points lead to ChuckLambert for the first time in2014. In the Street Stocks,Tylar Wilson passed five carsand held off a hard chargingKendal Gamsby to claim vic-
tory on day one. DefendingRea champion Wall wasforced to retire early due tooverheating issues.
On Saturday night, Daviswon his heat again comingfrom the fifth position. Start-ing ninth in the feature, Davismoved up to second spot butwas unable to mount a chargeon Jones for back to backwins. Ward Imrie made thepass for second about halfwaythrough the race but was un-able to get to the leader in timeas twenty-five laps cautionfree were completed. In theWISSOTA Midwest Modi-fieds, Winnipeg driver PaulVeert started in the eighth po-sition and moved up to thelead about halfway. Matt De-piero, who started fifteenth, got within a car length of Veertbut ran out of time with nine-teen laps of caution-free racing
to settle for second. Rea Me-morial Defending champChristopher Leek finishedthird and reclaimed the pointslead in the season standings. Inthe Street Stocks Ron West-over held the high line overTylar Wilson for the majorityof the race, but Wilson did notgive up and was able to squeakback to back wins at the EmoFair.
The 2014 Rea MemorialChampions are Paul Veert inthe WISSOTA Midwest Modi-fieds, Justin Jones in the WIS-SOTA Modifieds, and TylarWilson in the Emo StreetStocks. Congratulations!Thank you to all the great vol-unteers, sponsors and fans fortheir support and helping in agreat success at the EmoSpeedway! The Keith Mc-Nally Memorial and SeasonChampionship is this weekend.Hot Laps at 7:00pm and Rac-ing at 7:30pm.

Mira has created hew own line of tree art and “On the Rocks” stemware that is available ather store.By: Teresa Hazel
If you are shopping on ScottStreet, you might have noticeda new store named IslandDweller Creations that is oper-ated by Mira Donaldson in theformer Nirvana Hair Salonand Ear Clinic at 261 ScottStreet (beside the Fort FrancesMuseum).
Donaldson creates unique artpieces from driftwood and“nature stuff”. She is raisingmoney for her education withthe support of her parents, GuyDonaldson and Kelly Spicer.
At first glance, Mira Donald-son seems like a regular kidbut dig a little deeper and findout that at ten years old shewas diagnosed with Type I Di-abetes.
“My education goal is to be-come an Endocrinologist to
find a cure for Diabetes”,notes the ambitious twelveyear old, who plays basketball, volleyball and softball and isalso a competitive swimmer.
She also loves music andplays the piano, violin, flute, trumpet and trombone, and shecan sing too.
But wait, there’s more. Shealso enjoys sewing, drawing, travelling and writing.
“I have written many shortstories and poetry, as well asseven novels”, she reports.
It seems Mira would nothave enough time to create herspecial crafts and unique itemsbut the store tells a differenttale.
“Everything is from RainyLake”, explains the artist wholives on a small island onRainy Lake hence the name Is-
land Dweller Creations. There are plenty of unique
items from candles and bird-houses to centrepieces and treeart that would make great ad-ditions to cabins or eclectichomes.
“The Rainy Lake sand bagswent over really well”, reportsMira’s mother, Kelly Spicer.
“Living on an island andhaving diabetes makes everyday unique, just like my islanddweller creations; no twothings are the same”, saysDonaldson about her artwork.
To support Donaldson in herpursuit to become an Endocri-nologist, stop by her store. Is-land Dweller Creations is openTuesday to Friday from 9:30a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and someSaturdays as well.
