Our History 1955 to 1960
By Peggy Calvey Patton
The yellow-brick fronted building at 9410 Madison looks the same except for the Belinda sign and some graffiti, but the aura of the old Irish-American Club is still strong. It was our haven, our home away from home, our reward for a hard week’s work. In this building, we renewed old friendships and made new ones. It molded our futures with jobs and marriages. It was the bedrock of what we are today, setting a standard of helping each other, keeping families united, of honoring our religion, and showing the rich traditions of Ireland to our children and grandchildren. It is gratifying to see that the Irish dances survived through the years and most of our kids today know them. The Madison Avenue front door, guarded by a trustee taking admission, led to the ballroom and the best dance floor for miles around. Built-in benches on the east side of the room and the paintings of the late Tom Campbell lined the walls. His re-productions of the Irish country side were unbelievably realistic. Thankfully, he also did the portraits in our new home in Olmsted Twp. This talented modest man left a legacy of beauty that we will enjoy for decades. RIP Tom. The elevated stage was at the rear of the room where Irish and American bands alternately played. A spinning mirrored globe was centered over the dance floor and the reflective tiles twinkling off the walls created a romantic atmosphere. Tables were set up for the more formal events, but mostly the room was left vacant and the dancers took over the room. The bar room had a distinct masculine personality. The large oval bar took up most of the space and small tables lined the walls. A woman never sat at the bar unless she was with a male and kids were only allowed back there on St. Patrick’s Day. The bar had probably 25 to 30 bar-stools and always needed 2 bartenders. The atmosphere was always warm and jovial, lots of laughter and greetings. When my sister Eleanor and I along with our girlfriends would sit at table for a while, Pat Lynch, the president of the club, would approach us and say “You girls are not going to have another drink, are you?” We always jumped up and said no, that we were just heading back to the dance floor. Some of our girlfriends who were not Irish didn’t understand it, but we would never dream of not following the behavior code that Pat Lynch and the other officers expected of the ladies. Much more leeway was given the guys at the bar. Mostly everyone got along, narrowbacks, greenhorns, union guys and policemen, firemen and utility workers, but sometimes a fight broke out. On one St. Patrick’s Day in the 1970’s, several arguments broke out involving multiple factions of those occupations. No one was left on a bar stool. The non-combatants hugged the walls and cheered their friends on. The trustees broke it up and everything went back to normal with the oppositions sending apology drinks across the bar to their former enemies. It was quiet for about twenty minutes and then it started up again with more people involved, but this time the trustees were not successful in their roles as referees and peacemakers, so they had to call the police. Because it was St. Patrick’s Day, and the work force of the CPD were probably not Irish they did come and cleaned out the barroom. The next time I visited the Irish American Club, the oval bar was gone, replaced by a small bar on the west wall and the room was filled with small tables. It was nice, but the old bar will live on in infamy.
