Dear parents and caregivers,

What a great term 2 we’ve had! I would like to thank the students for their hard work and excellent behaviour and the parents and caregivers for their continued positive partnership with the school. Thank you to all the staff at FWPS for their dedication to making a difference for the FWPS learning community. I look forward to seeing everyone refreshed after the break and ready for another busy term. School starts for students on Tuesday 23 July, 2019.

Parent-Teacher Interviews

It was wonderful to see such a large number of parents, caregivers and students engaging with teachers for informative discussions over the past week. There were plenty of smiles and cuddles given to students afterwards, so parents were obviously very happy with what they heard. The teachers did an exceptional job at making the hall so warm and welcoming.

3T Students in 3T have been very busy in all key learning areas. We are a small bunch of positive and enthusiastic learners. We have been learning about materials and are always excited about conducting science experiments and watching if our predictions are correct. We created cooling devices to see who was able to make an ice cube last the longest. We found that materials like foil helped the ice cube melt slower. We also tested how far we can release a paper rocket using rubber bands to launch it.

3T have been attending music lessons with Mr Post and have played a variety of instruments like the keyboard, rhythmic sticks and glockenspiel. It has been challenging to sing and play at the same time. We have also been keeping active by playing sport outside. We participated in the Premiers Sporting Challenge and we continue to try to increase our physical activities throughout the day.

We love fun maths lessons! We use concrete materials and technology to help us learn different maths concepts. Our favourite activity is using ‘Dash & Dot’ to learn about position.

Conservation Warriors in 3-6D This term the students in 3-6D have been learning about conservation in Geography. Focusing on protecting two of Australia’s well-known landmarks, the Great Barrier Reef and the Daintree Rainforest, the students have developed a better understanding of the importance of recycling, reusing and reducing to protect these environments. The students have enjoyed posing their own research question, using the internet to locate specific information to answer their research questions and create an informative text about the Great Barrier Reef and the Daintree Rainforest to share with others. They have explored the many threats to these environments and better understand their role in helping to protect and preserve these amazing Australian landmarks.

Semolina Yogurt Cake Made with yogurt and semolina flour, this one-bowl cake doesn't require a mixer and comes out moist, tangy and delicious.

For the syrup

1 cup water

1 cup sugar

Juice from 1 lemon

For the cake:

1 1/2 cups semolina

1 cup of coconut

1 cup sugar

2 cups plain yogurt (preferably unsweetened low-fat or regular plain yogurt, although Greek

yogurt will work)

4 large eggs

¼ cup of flour

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 teaspoon baking powder

1 teaspoon rose water

Instructions

Preheat the oven to 180°C. Lightly grease a baking dish with cooking spray or vegetable oil

and line it with baking paper.

To make the syrup, boil the water and sugar in a small saucepan until the sugar completely

dissolves. Remove the pan from the heat and stir in the lemon juice. Set aside and let cool

completely.

To make the cake, in a large mixing bowl, beat the eggs and sugar until the sugar dissolves.

Add yogurt, mix well with a wooden spoon. Add the remaining ingredients all at once and stir

very well until all of the ingredients are evenly incorporated and the batter is smooth.

Bake just until the centre of the cake is set and the top turns golden brown this will take

approximately 20 minutes.

Immediately pour the cold syrup evenly over the surface of the warm cake, to get the amount

just right, start by pouring half the syrup over the top and letting it soak in. Add the remaining

half just until the cake looks moist but not saturated.

Let the cake cool completely, or chill, before serving.
