It!was!a!beauAful!blue!sky!morning!with!wonderfully!cool!temperatures!greeAng!guests!as!they!arrived!at!the!Marie/a!Country!Club.!This!beauAful!morning!followed!mostly!clear!skies!and!a!fabulous!full!moon!the!evening!before.!The!Marie/a!Country!Club!guests!were!greeted!by!a !beauAful!display!of!Spring!tulips,!pansies,!snapdragons!and!more!at!the!circular!drive!entrance!to!the!facility.

Service!pins!were!presented!for!1!year!to!15!years!service!when!volunteers!arrived!and!were!welcomed!before!they!were!seated.

Every!year!the!volunteer!office!staff!does!a!spectacular!job!making!all!the!dining!room!tables!beauAful.!This!year!they!did!not!disappoint!with!wonderful!centerpieces!of!colorful!plants!in!gardening!totes!overflowing!with!flower!seed!packets!and!very!useful!gardening!tools.

Our!spectacular!dining!room!overlooked!the!expansive!golf!course!with!spectacular!views.!Eva!Perone!(Evita)!could!not!be!found!on!the!balcony!but!you!certainly!had!a!spectacular!view!of!Kennesaw!Mountain.

Marcelle!Johnson!\!Higgins!Memorial!Hospital!and!Cynthia!Robertson!\!Tanner!Medical!Center.!!Brenda!introduced!the!ExecuAve!Board!and!all!Volunteer!Board!Members!as!well.!

WellStart!Kennestone!Regional!Medical!Center!currently!has!461!acAve!volunteers!that!have!volunteered!in!excess!of!55,000!hours!of!service!since!July!1st,!2012,!which!translates!to!$1.2!million!dollars!in!service.!That!is!fantasAc!!And!this!Summer!we!will!have!65!“VolunTeens.”

Amy!Thomas!personally!thanked!the!volunteers!for!their!gils!to!the!hospital!and!complimented!their!fundraising!efforts!and!their!dedicaAon!to!such!a!worthy!cause.!Dan!Woods!also!greeted!the!volunteers!before!lunch!and!spoke!about!his!background!and!history!with!the!organizaAon.!He!gave!everyone!a!brief!outline!of!the!recent!progress!with!all!the!construcAon!and!some!plans!for!the!future!of!the!hospital.!He!stressed!that!the!facility!is!at!a!historic!level!of!paAent!experience!and!saAsfacAon.!He!told!us!some!interesAng!staAsAcs!including!the!fact!that!the!WellStar!Regional!Medical!Center!has!125,000!visits!to!its!Emergency!Department!per!year.!Renee!led!the!luncheon!with!an!invocaAon.

Our!luncheon!meal!began!with!a!wonderful!specialized!Waldorf!salad.!Refreshing!crystal!clear!water,!iced!tea!and!coffee.!Lunch!was!an!encrusted!chicken!breast!over!wild!rice!blend!with!crisp!carrots!and!broccoli.!!Sol!dinner!rolls!were!delicious!too!!Dessert!included!key!lime!pie!with!fresh!whipped!cream!and!a!raspberry!drizzle!topped!with!a!fresh!raspberry.!

Aler!our!lovely!luncheon!meal!Sco/!Burfi/!thanked!the!staff!who!contributed!to!making!the!luncheon!a!huge!success,!Kim!Farmer,!Yvonne!Busch!and!Kimberly!Downey!who!made!this!event!extra!special!as!usual.

Thanks!were!expressed!to!the!Volunteer!Board!as!well!for!their!efforts!and!dedicaAon.!Sco/!appreciates!the!level !of!dedicaAon!of!the!volunteers!and!last!year’s!fund!raising!of!over!$325,000.!Some!items!that!were!funded!last!year:!ED!staxis,!pediatric!artwork,!therapeuAc!intervenAon!kits!for!paAents!with!demenAa!which!helps!clinical!staff!treat!and!assist!these!type!of!paAents.!Also!the!volunteers!have!had!100%!compliance!for!the!last!4!months!with!hand\washing.!A!posiAve!paAent!experience!is!the!ulAmate!goal.!Stop!and!take!the!Ame!to!assist!paAents!who!are!struggling.!Sco/!recognized!our!challenge!to!him!in!helping!everyone!and!the!organizaAon!grow.!Reach!out!and!help!the!organizaAon,!challenge!volunteers!to!bring!in!a!new!volunteer!to!help!us!grow.

Dr.!Robert!Lubitz!spoke!about!his!first!exposure!to!a!hospital!volunteer!just!before!his!16th!birthday.!Originally!Dr.!Lubitz!went!into!medical!pracAce.!Seeing!paAents!one!at!a!Ame!wasn’t!enough.!He!wanted!to!broaden!his!reach!in!geqng!a!community!to!care!for!the!community.!He!appreciates!the!value!of!the!team!in!caring!for!paAents.!He!also!menAoned!that!WellStar!Kennestone!is!one!of!the!top!hospitals!in!the!state!and!in!the!top!10%!of!all!hospitals!in!the!United!States.!!He!said!all!you!have!to!do!is,!“just!ask”!to!help!get!someone!else!get!involved!in!volunteering.

! I!had!the!pleasure!of!meeAng!with!Dr.!William!Burak,!Jr.!M.D.!who!is!located!in!the!790!building.

Dr.!Burak!is!a!surgical!oncologist!(cancer!surgeon)!with!an!internaAonal!reputaAon!in!the!diagnosis!and!treatment!of!breast!cancer.

When!I!asked!him!what!path!took!him!to!the!medical!field,!he!told!me!his!father!was!a!urologist!and!that!he!knew!early!on!that!he!wanted!to!be!a!doctor.

Dr.!Burak!was!on!the!faculty!at!Ohio!State!for!12!years!as!a!tenured!associate!professor.!During!2005\2010!he!took!a!mid!career!change.!During!this!Ame!he!helped!develop!medical!devices!to!help!improve!paAents’!mobility.

Dr.!Burak!grew!up!in!Philadelphia,!but!traveled!around,!mostly!in!the!North!East!part!of!the!USA!due!to!his!father!being!in!the!Air!Force.!Dr.!Burak's!wife,!Susan,!is!a!radiologist,!his!son,!Ryan,!a/ends!college!at!Middleburg!in!Vermont,!and!his!daughter,!Alexandra,!is!in!high!school !and!very!involved!in!playing!tennis.

Dr.!Burak!enjoys!salt\water!fishing!and!he!loves!to!travel.!At!one!Ame
