Notice, Replace, and Repeat (Understanding negative thinking and cognitive solutions)

You will normally have depressive thinking when you feel depressed. Hopelessness, powerlessness, worthlessness, and

blame can elevate your misery. Depressive thinking can however be challenged and defeated. You can use cognitive approaches to change this negative thinking, gain relief, and

prevent future relapses.

The Notice, Replace, and Repeat technique can be quite ef-fective at battling depressive thoughts that seem

overwhelming.

First you must Notice depressive thoughts. It is highly important that you pay attention to when negative

thoughts are encroaching on your ways of thinking. Once these thoughts are acknowledged it is much

easier to address the depression you may be experiencing.

Once you are able to recognize that depressive and nega-tive thoughts are beginning to formulate, it is time to counteract them with thoughts that are more positive, realistic, and reality based. You must take a negative

and replace it with a positive. It may be useful to develop a gratitude list to help you discover more

positive and realistic ways of thinking.

With the negative and depressive thought replaced by a more positive and realistic thought, it is time to Re-peat the process. When the negative thought creeps back, it is time to again replace it with the positive. Much like anything we attempt to accomplish, this process take time, emotional energy, and practice. We need to practice noticing and replacing these

thoughts. This can sometimes take a while to master. Don’t be discouraged however. The research on cog-nitive ways of managing depression clearly demon-strates that this approach is highly effective at devel-oping an effective way of dealing with depression.

The Wellness Shack is funded by donations from its members, friends and these organizations.

Arnold & Louis Domer Foundation

How do we know The Wellness Shack works? Donating money to a nonprofit is similar to investing money in an idea that someone

has. You might ask the person “How do I know this is going to work?” The Wellness Shack

faces this question every time we approach people or grant foundations who might be will-

ing to financially support our mission to help people who live with mental health issues.

Helping them to find stability and a sense of fulfillment in their lives. Those people, those

grant foundations ask the same question, “How do we know The Wellness Shack works?”

Statistics collected from surveys do not paint the same picture as will someone’s story Our

personal stories of recovery, no matter how simple or how complicated can demonstrate to

the uncertain givers and benefactors that The Wellness Shack does work.

In the last 16 years, The Wellness Shack has helped hundreds of people! For the

last 2 years we have been asking people to share their stories with us, so we can share

them with others. Staff have asked people. Our newsletter has posted the request often.

I’m certain we have asked over 200 people to help us by writing their story. At this time we

have received maybe 15 stories. That’s sad. It doesn’t indicate very much success on how

TWS’s services help people. Silence just reinforces the misperception that we are not help-

ing anyone.

So how can you help The Wellness Shack?

Take a moment during this period of isolation to write your story. You can remain totally

anonymous if you wish. The important thing is that you write your story and send it to us.

Do you want to attend online meetings but can’t figure out how to connect to ZOOM?

Call us to make an appointment and we will arrange to meet with you and help you install the program.

We’ll work with you until you are comfortable signing-in.
