The Welcome Store

In the historic community of Welcome, Texas, the 2,758 square foot Welcome Store is a local icon and is now available for purchase. The Welcome General Store began its operation in 1889. The store initially operated under the name John Reichle General Merchandise. The Welcome Store was originally two stories high, until the 1900 Galveston Storm destroyed the top floor. The store had a post office and also carried a wide variety of goods typical of a general store such as dry foods, furniture, glassware, and even caskets. It has been a community gathering place for over a century, where area residents have come together to share stories and play games. The management of the store remained in the Reichle family until 1956, and it is currently owned and operated by the Faist family. Many residents and reporters have often referred to the store as the “one-stop station of a warm country community”. Today, customers are able to buy goods such as fresh groceries, drinks, gasoline, and feed in the store. The Welcome Store has always been the economic and entertainment hub for this historic area of Texas and is ripe for a rebirth.

History Of Welcome, Texas

The history of Welcome, Texas, begins in the late 1820s with the original settlers of Texas in Austin County. From the late 1820s to 1852 the town remained nameless until German immigrant and schoolmaster, J.F. Schmidt, named the town Welcome after the kind hospitality of the residents. In 1887, Schmidt also helped to organize a town singing society who were primarily German. Welcome has hosted other entertainment events such as professional entertainer Edmund “Boop” Hill in the 1920s, regularly scheduled dances, and bands in the Welcome Hall. In the coming years other facilities were built in the town including a cotton gin, blacksmith shop, bank, several schools, sawmill, molasses mill, and hospital. Welcome reached its peak in 1936 with a population of 200 residents and four businesses in the town.
