UPCOMING ACTIVITIES Mystery Book Club Change of Plans: There were not enough copies of Victoria Thompson’s books in our library so we will go to plan B. Bring a previously read mystery writer by a woman along with 4 reasons to like or dislike the book. Foreign Affairs Discussion Group will NOT meet in March. A fascinating case study is unfolding before us involving the ability of localities, nation-states, and the international community to deal with the global threat of the Coronavirus. Discussants are urged to look for information about and reflect on this process so that we may discuss it when we do meet again.

FROM THE LIBRARY: Attention music lovers, coming soon. Our Library has received a donation of six large older music books. Some have music from a single era, others have both music and some historical information about Broadway shows. Because of their physical condition we will have a "dummy book" on the music shelf with a list of titles in it. If you wish to check one out, contact Barbara Fairchild at x7349. If this is of interest, we may add to the collection. For example, I am donating a book of Irish songs.

All Trips Depart from Security and the transportation fee is $10. If you need to cancel for any reason you MUST do so 48 hours in advance or you will be charged a $15 cancellation fee. 2020-2021 Subscriptions- Interest sheets for Roundhouse, NSO, Shakespeare Theatre, and BSO will all be available in a binder next to the trip book. Collington will provide transportation only if at least 10 people are signed up. Once you are signed up, we will contact you and confirm we have the appropriate number of residents to permit the trip to go. When we do this, you should purchase your tickets. DO NOT purchase tickets until we provide confirmation.

Update on the line painting. The line painting was completed 3/11/2020 by O’Leary Asphalt. The areas that were painted are the 2nd gate. A stop bar to encourage drivers to stop at the sign and direction arrows to direct traffic straight or left and a dividing line between the two lanes. There were two additional stop bars painted. One at the apartment parking lot entrance and another at the other at the bottom of the hill from the wood shop. The crosswalk that was supposed to be painted allowing crossing from the 5000’s to the 3000’s was postponed due to a code that requires a ramp where a cross walk is painted and pending the orientation of the cross walk a sidewalk must be present also.

There will be an upcoming fire device inspection with Siemens to test our horns and strobes for operational readiness. Once we get a schedule, we will post a notification to the residents.

HORTICULTURIST UPDATE- Our Landscaper will be continuing cleaning up perennials and spring preparation for beds. The contractor is using a combination of mechanical an dchemical methods for weeds (in beds). We want to be cautious of our pets so we are asking you to keep pets out of plant beds as we prep for mulching of beds. Signs will be posted in areas being treated and will be in place for 48 hours after spraying. Thanks, Kyle

Medical Providers update:

Please note that effective March 12, 2020, all scheduled appointments with the Medical Providers (Dermatologist, Audiologist, Podiatrist) in Apt. 262 will be cancelled as part of Collington’s “soft shutdown” measures. We will let you know when those restrictions will be lifted.

How to Stay Well - How to Avoid Viruses

Today I want to reiterate some very important pieces of advice on avoiding the coronavirus.

As you know Collington has taken precautionary measures to protect the entire community from the coronavirus. Meetings are canceled, dining procedures have changed and all staff have been trained.

I want to stress that you are the most important protector of your own health. Most importantly remember to keep your hands clean. Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, How of-ten do you need to wash? A lot. The CDC says to wash your hands:

• Before, during, and after food prep • Before eating • Before and after tending to someone who's sick Before and after

treating a cut or other wound • After going to the bathroom • After changing diapers or helping a child in the bathroom • After blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing • After touching an animal, or touching pet food or pet waste After

handling pet food or pet treats • After touching garbage

If soap and water are not readily available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 62% alcohol. Make sure to use enough so that it covers all the surfaces on your hands. Rub that on until your hands feel dry, which should take about 20 seconds.

If you still have some skin left on your hands after all that washing, try to keep it clean. Avoid touching contaminated surfaces. Use a clean paper towel to open bathroom doors.

AND Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.

Remember if you do feel sick call the clinic x7791 first. Do not just show up!

Now for meetings, elections, etc. You may have noticed that our elec-tion for the resident candidates for the Board of Directors has been cancelled, as has the candidate forum. This year the election was ba-sically a formality. Our by-laws require us to present 2 candidates to the Board. This year we have only 2 candidates. Therefore, they will both be presented for the Board’s selection regardless of the number of votes received they may have received.

The Council Meeting scheduled for Tuesday, March 17th has been postponed until Tuesday, March 24th, at 2 pm in the Auditorium. The most important business this month is approving the RA budget for 2020-2021. If we cannot gather on the 24th then the Council will vote by proxy.

NOTICE:

The library will be closing on Friday, March 13th at noon and remain closed until further notice.

The OO Shop will be closed until further notice.

Collington is now in a state of flux and uncertainty regarding the coro-navirus. Please be patient with management and trust their judge-ment. They are making decisions to protect our community without enough facts about the extent of the virus. Our staff will be doing everything they can to protect us and themselves. We can get through this, as always, together.

Collington Infrastructure Improvement Project: Working through Sustainability Subcommittee of Buildings shortly after arriving, I researched the Covered Walkway lighting situation, analyzing aspects affecting the environment, costs, and maintenance burdens. Then I wrote a memo to management convincing Collington to immediately convert covered walkways to LED bulbs, resulting in immediate savings of thousands of dollars annually in electricity, bulb purchase costs, and maintenance labor (replacing burned-out bulbs). The conversion to LED bulbs also markedly improved the uniformity and overall quality of walkway illumination.

The following letter was sent to family members of residents living in Collington’s skilled nursing, and assisted living from our Health Care Administrator and Assisted Living Manager on March 12th Dear Family Members, We continue to do all we can to minimize the risk of the coronavirus (COVID-19). We are following the guidance of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidance, and state recommendations in relation to visitation to Nursing Homes, Personal Care Communities, and Assisted Living Communities. We are writing to share more detail with you regarding these changes.

Based on this new guidance, we are restricting visitation to our Assisted Living and Skilled Nursing Center, to essential visits only.

Essential visitation examples would be when a visitor is essential for the resident’s emotional well-being and care or end-of-life care. The situation might be a daughter who visits her mother every Monday would stop these visits and limit her visits to only those situations when her mom has a significant issue. Also, during the visit, the daughter would limit her contact with her mother and only meet with her in her room or a place the facility has specifically dedicated for visits.

We understand that connecting with loved ones is incredibly important, and there are a variety of other ways you might consider connecting with them. These may include telephone, email, text, or through Skype or Facebook on a personal device or the phone many residents have in their rooms. Let us know how we can help facilitate communication. We are currently working on enhancing these opportunities for residents where possible.

We are asking all Health Center visitors to please utilize the Security entrance. Essential visitors will be screened before they can enter the building, including a temperature check.

Associates who regularly work in the Health Center in both the Assisted Living and the Skilled Nursing Center, or who may need access to these locations for work-related reasons, will also be screened the same way before being able to report to these areas. We support these restrictions from multiple governmental agencies as they are clearly focused on minimizing the risk of exposure of coronavirus to the most vulnerable residents we serve. We also know this is a dramatic step that will require openness to change and understanding. We want to make sure you have options for communication, and we are working to support both you and your loved ones. If you have concerns or questions, please speak with our Director of Social Work, Director of Nursing, Assisted Living Manager or Health Services Administrator.
