St. Peter Catholic SchoolDuring Catholic Schools Week!

St. Peter School Mission Statement and Goals

School Philosophy

St. Peter School

The above theme is theone selected for this year’sNational Catholic SchoolsWeek. This annual event fo-cusses attention on the goodwork done by the nation’sCatholic Schools. This 2015theme closely parallels thethree tasks of Jesus’ mission:faith comes from preaching;knowledge comes fromteaching; and service is howwe go about healing.

The National CatholicEducation Association re-

ports that the 7,400 Catholic Schools provide $19.8 billionin savings each year for the nation. This figure is based onthe average public school per-student cost of $8,700. Inmost states, including Missouri, Catholic Schools get nostate aid, but yet parents are required to pay taxes. If the2.2 million Catholic students went to the public school, thecitizens’ taxes would increase considerably. This is anenormous gift, especially during these challenging eco-nomic times.

Students who are being educated today are not thesame as those who have graduated in the past; the “mil-lennial” generation is quite different because the worldhas changed significantly. Technology, computers and themedia have created a whole new world. Some of the sec-ular press and entertainment media advocate and fostera culture that is in conflict with Gospel values. The sa-credness of life and traditional values are challenged andprofaned. We are developing more of a culture of deaththan a culture of life.

Parents place their children in Catholic schools forthree reasons: the superior academic achievement ofCatholic school students, the secure and disciplined learn-ing environment, and a total education that includesgrowth in religious awareness and the formation ofmorals and values.

Catholic schools are not a luxury that we can lightly

choose or reject. In a world which is dominated by so muchselfishness and violence, so many counter-messages toChristian values and faith, Catholic schools are essentialfor valued education and formation of our children.

St. Peter School is being transformed by an infusion ofyoung voices with the addition of Infant/Toddler & Pre-school Programs. All grades are testing above grade levelon standardized tests. For example, the 8th Grade scoredat a 9.3 level, the 7th grade scored at 12.1 (where a seniorwould be in the first month of 12th year.) The new SaxonMath Program is used in Pre-K through 8th Grade.

The students are introduced to the need to be of serv-ice to the larger community. During this year here at St.Peter School students took part in such projects as Pen-nies for the Cure – fighting Breast Cancer; Miles for MealsWalk-a-Thon to benefit the Senior Center; Saline CountyHoliday Project for needy families and Special Olympicsfunding. During this past Christmas session the studentssent 33 gift boxes to our soldiers overseas and the K-3rdgrades collected a pick-up truck load for the Food Pantry. This outpouring of community service was exemplifiedwith benefit breakfast for a young friend who is undergo-ing cancer treatment.

We are saddened by the fact that Mr. Littrell is retiringat the end of the School Year. He has done so much for ourschool and he will be sorely missed.

Competing against 36 other Catholic Schools theSpeech Team students received high honors and do well inbasketball, volleyball and soccer competitions.

As we celebrate 130 years of Catholic Education here inMarshall we are most grateful to the larger community ofMarshall who give great support to insure that St. PeterSchool shines as a beacon of holistic education in Marshall. What is being accomplished here is indicative of the spiritof enthusiasm, purpose and commitment on the part of thestrong leadership of our principal, Gary Littrell and dedi-cated faculty and staff, school board and Home & SchoolAssociation as well as parents and parishioners who showinterest in the support of the student’s education. With anever-increasing enrollment, we have a future as we con-tinue to make the investment and for this we rejoice.

a word from Fr. Kevin Gormley, Pastor of St. Peter Church & School

The mission of St Peter School is to provide an education which will nurture the spiritual,

emotional, physical and academic growth of each student, helping them to become productive

Christian citizens. With God’s help, all will learn and grow.

We believe that each child is a unique individual with their own special dignity created in the image and likenessof God. Each has been given talents to develop and use. The atmosphere, which the school provides, will con-tribute to each child’s growth and development in such a way that they will be able to contribute to the welfareof our American and global society. In an atmosphere permeated with gospel values, pupils will learn respectfor themselves, others, and God. The school will make every endeavor to help each pupil to grow in his/her ownuniqueness, strengths and weaknesses. We endeavor to foster this growth through our teaching ministry by pro-claiming the GOSPEL MESSAGE of hope, peace and justice, taught and lived in a FAITH COMMUNITY that wor-ships together and reaches out in SERVICE to others. The school will help each pupil to accept responsibilityfor their own individual life and actions as well as having a sense of responsibility for the well being of oth-ers.

The school, recognizing the primacy of the role of parents in the education of their children, will assist themin their God-given responsibilities by reinforcing family and Christian values; by guaranteeing excellence intraining their children in the faith and practice of the Catholic Church. By assisting each child to become anaccepting and responsible individual, the school will attempt to build a better society and bring about peaceand justice.

Mindful of our uniqueness, the school will endeavor to impart quality of instruction that stresses excellence.Emphasis will be placed on cooperation rather than competition. Learning opportunities will challenge pupils’talents for greater growth and development. The school will train its students in an appreciation of the dignityand sacredness of all. Self-discipline, needed to demonstrate a strong sense of appreciation and respect forthemselves and others, will be strongly encouraged and demanded. We believe that each child is of incal-culable worth and has a right to the opportunity for complete human growth.

St Peter Catholic School’s desired outcome is to instill in our students a lifelong love of learning and the confi-dence to tackle new challenges; to develop in the child a deep personal relationship with Jesus; and foster thevirtues and skills of mind and heart which enable him /her to translate the Gospel values into social action andreform.
