Glorifying Christ in the Power of the Spiritby The Rev. Rick Matters

Paul gives us a powerful image that I treasure, especially when feeling pressure or fatigue. It is the image of a large pitcher suspended in the air, from which God pours the Holy Spirit into our hearts. This image refreshes me with its abundance and sense of being cleansed. It feels like God has washed away my worries and weariness, bringing the peace through Jesus Christ.

Today we glorify Christ in the power of the Spirit. Our praise multiplies like the water that filled the mop buckets in Walt Disney’s Fantasia. Remember how Mickey Mouse waved the sorcerer’s wand without really understanding its power? More and more water overflowed the buckets, filling the house and causing a flood. In that classic movie, peace is restored when the flowing stops. For us, though, the more we give glory to Christ, the more the Spirit seems to fill our hearts with the peace of God. God’s peace then overflows our hearts, pouring peace into the lives of others.

They present new ways of listening to the needs of others in our neighborhood, our church, and the communities that surround us, and they suggest how we might better respond.

We have the capacity to address human needs in ways that organizations never can. We all have gifts and talents to offer. This book aims to help us build a better community together, to move beyond consumerism and reliance on entities, in order that together we can enjoy a hope-filled life. The book offers practical ideas about how we, as unique individuals, can create a caring community, one filled with love, compassion, kindness, and generosity.

Glorifying Christ by Responding to the CommunityBy Robin Denney

My other church ministry is in Gonzales, where I am the lay person in charge of restarting a bilingual (English/Spanish) Episcopal church. As I’ve been living there for two years, a good deal of my work has been

being present and looking for ways the church might respond to the joys and concerns of the community. By listening, I finally discovered the pressing social need of literacy. There are no programs to help Spanish-only speakers who experience the double isolation of language and illiteracy. So, inspired by the Spirit, I started a literacy class, even though I speak only broken Spanish. Through the passion and commitment of the students, and inspiration of the Spirit, we have taught each other. And now a new pastor in town with Spanish grammar skills has joined us, and the school district has given us text books. Week by week we are glorifying Christ in the power of the Spirit!

This Bible study is based on a synoptic and chronological study of the four Gospels. Together we will study and learn from the Jesus’ life and ministry and learn more about being disciples.

Glorifying Christ in the Power of the SpiritBy The Rev. Rick Matters

John 16:12-15 tells us that the Spirit of truth will guide us into all the truth. Again today, on Trinity Sunday, we boldly declare that the Spirit of truth has come, but we don’t necessarily feel that we have arrived at all truth. Jesus teaches us that the Spirit leads us into truth because “he will not speak on his own, but will speak whatever he hears.” What the Spirit hears is the message of Jesus. So often we mainly hear our own thoughts and opinions, or our own questions. In contrast, the Spirit helps us hear the risen Lord.

Actively listening to another is the way of the Trinity, for Father, Son, and Holy Spirit each attend to the others. The way into truth is further clarified for us when Jesus explains that the Spirit “will glorify me, because he will take what is mine and declare it to you.” The Spirit leads us into all truth as we glorify Jesus Christ in the power of the Spirit.

Opening the Door to God’s LoveBy Robin Denney

In the lesson from Romans today, Paul says “God’s love has been poured into our hearts though the Holy Spirit that has been given to us.” When we share that love with other people we are glorifying Christ. This love that is poured into us is greater than human love, it is a heavenly love, a love so great that it can bear and forgive and heal all things, a love that comes from God through the Holy Spirit. When we find it difficult to love someone, or to let go of some hurt, we need only remember that we have access to an amazing, impossible, all powerful source of love, and the door to that love dwells in our hearts always. Through prayer, the Spirit in us will open that door, and that love of God will flow through us.

The More Profound PeaceBy The Rev. Rick Matters

As a nation we support peace in many ways. On my recent visit to Haiti I saw UN peacekeepers driving the streets of Port-au-Prince with two hands on a mounted machine gun. Locally, we work for peace by trying to keep weapons out of the hands of gang members. This peace equates to the absence of violence, and it is critically important. We pray for such peace.

In Romans 5:1-5 St. Paul reminds us today that this political peace rests on the more profound peace that comes from God. The peace that truly ends war derives from the heart of the Trinity. God invites us to participate in this peace by pouring the Holy Spirit into our hearts. When we welcome this gift, our hearts overflow and peace is established. The church is the heart of Jesus Christ, and when we glorify Christ in the power of the Spirit, true peace flows out into the world.

Saturday, June 22Friends of Epiphany Dinner

Diocesan Day of Discovery—The Commission on Ministry’s annual Day of Discovery is coming up on Saturday, June 8, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at St. Paul’s, Salinas. This is the first requirement in the ordination process, but it’s also a valuable experience for lay people who are considering more intentional discernment about their call to ministry. The day will include new information about the opportunity for licensed lay ministries, a way to help people focus on and train for a particular area of ministry in their parish. Register by e-mailing jrshreve@aol.com by June 3. There is a $10 fee for lunch and materials.
