It’s almost Fair Time Having grown up in the hometown of the Missouri State

Fair, it didn’t take long for me to believe I was an expert onthe subject. I started working at our church sponsored tent atthe age of 13 and quickly learned which gates we the easiestto find parking spots and which areas to avoid at certaintimes of the day.

I even learned to drive on the streets of the fairgrounds -off seasons, of course. Dating back to 1901, the Missouri State

Fair is among the state’s oldest and mosttradition-rich events for summer familyfun! It’s where I looked at displayed wed-ding cakes and yearned to learn how todecorate one myself. Little did I know thatone day my sister (your managing editor)and I would both learn how and work inher bakery for more than 10 years. One

year, she made a portrait cake for Burl Iveswhen he performed at the fair. Another election year, the fairboard ordered a cake with the map of Missouri on it for theGovernor. To date, it was the largest cake she had everattempted. Assembling it “at” the fairgrounds, it was six fullsheet cakes 9’ x 12’ as big as my bedroom. She even had thepleasure of being asked to judge the cakes at the fair morethan once.

It was at the Home Economics building where I learnedabout ready made pie crusts and haven’t made my own fromscratch since.

Fairs mean different things to different people. One year,we sat on the grass next to our car and waited for midnightjust so we could say “we stayed too long at the fair.”

The concert lineup in front of the Grandstands should findeveryone attending very happy My sons’ favorite band willperform at the grandstand one night while another night willdelight my 86 year old father. So take a look at all the peopleto see scheduled to be at the fair this year - starting on page10.

Make plans to visit the air-conditioned Missouri State FairGift Shop & Museum during the 2014 Fair. The volunteerswill be glad to help you find the perfect 2014 State Fair sou-venir or collector’s item while they share historical highlightsof the Fair.

Who knows? I may even see you at the fair. Our publisherhas never been and I think it’s high time to take him.
