Lancaster’s Western Hotel Museumfrom muleskinners to British lords

Lancaster’s WesternHotel Museum, onceknown as the WesternHotel, is the oldest struc-ture in downtown Lancast-er. The century-old historicstructure recently under-went the first of a multi-phase beautificationprocess to restore thetreasured facility to its orig-inal glory.

Everything on the firstlevel of the hotel, from thefloors to the window trim,has been restored, and newadditions to the museum'scollection, relevant to thehotel and the region, havebeen incorporated in anexhibit space to highlightthe hotel’s rich history.

The facility was notalways called the WesternHotel. The structure wasconstructed around 1888on land owned by theSouthern Pacific Railroad,however, when Louis VonRockabrand, the firstknown owner of the hotel,took over ownership, itbecame known as theAntelope Valley Hotel. Thehotel changed ownership afew of times in the follow-ing years and so did itsname. Former namesinclude the aforemen-tioned Antelope ValleyHotel and the GilwynHotel. It became the West-ern Hotel when Georgeand Myrtie Webber tookover ownership in 1885.

Despite the changes inname, the Western Hotel,with its grand history, isone of the most visiblelinks to Lancaster's her-itage. Speculators, travel-ers, muleskinners andBritish lords are only a fewexamples of the variousgroups who used the hotel.In its early days, a stay atthe hotel would set travel-ers back $1 per night.

At the beginning of the20th century, members ofthe Los Angeles-OwensRiver Aqueduct construc-tion crew stayed at thehotel, making it a hub ofsocial activity and com-merce in the area. Some ofLancaster’s most historicresidents spent time in thehotel including MauriceJames Reynolds and hiswife Jane Porter Reynolds,the namesake of the Lan-caster's Jane ReynoldsPark.

After the passing ofGeorge Webber, his wife,Myrtie Eveline Gibson-Sul-

livan-Webber, continued torun the hotel until herdeath in 1978 at the age of110. Webber Pool at JaneReynolds Park was namedin her honor.

After Myrtie's death, thehotel fell into such disre-pair that it was con-demned, but was eventual-ly rescued by the thennewly-formed WesternHotel Historical Society,and reopened as a muse-um in 1988. The museumis now listed as a CaliforniaHistoric Landmark.

Presently, the WesternHotel Museum highlightsLancaster’s historical past.Visitors can view the frontparlor, dining room and amodel hotel room on thefirst floor, as well as thebackyard garden. Eachroom contains artifacts,pictures and signs withinformation about thehotel’s history. The currentexhibit features twoorgans, a piano, originalhotel artifacts, a map fromthe 1920s, a crank tele-phone, a stove and otheritems representative of theera. The model room onthe first floor holds a bed,chest of drawers and awashstand including achamber pot.

In addition, there is aminiature scale model ofthe hotel in the diningroom located just off thefront parlor. The secondfloor, while currentlyclosed, will be open to visi-tors as restoration effortscontinue.

Q. How do I know whenI need to re-pot my plants?

A. Plants leave clueswhen it’s time to repotthem or change out theirpotting soil. Watch forthese common signs. Youfind yourself wateringmore and more and yourplant is still in perpetualwilt. You see roots growingthrough the surface of thesoil or out the bottom ofthe pot. When you easethe plant out of the potthere are large roots cir-cling the outer circumfer-ence of the rootball. Theplant is breaking its pot.The leaf edges are turningbrown. The center of theplant is turning brownand/or dying. The plant isjust too big for its pot (it’slosing its balance), or toobig for the space in whichyou want to keep it. Youcan’t remember the lasttime you repotted. Formost plants, the best timeto repot is late winter/earlyspring when the days arestarting to get longer, trig-gering new growth in yourplant’s roots and leaves.

Q. What’s the differencebetween mulch andamendment?

A. The biggest differenceis how “the material” isused. An amendment isincorporated into the soilas a soil conditioner usedto improve a soil’s texture,boost its nutrient contentand make the soil morewater retentive. Anamendment is incorporat-ed into the soil throughdigging orrototilling. Examples ofamendments include com-post, gypsum, lime,humus, etc. Mulching isthe practice of applyingorganic or inorganic mate-rials on the surface of thesoil around the plants.Mulches help hold themoisture in the soil, and

they help insulate it fromextreme or rapid changesof temperature. They helpprevent weed seedlingsfrom becoming estab-lished, help prevent ero-sion and water runoff, andmake your garden bedslook tidy. The garden bedshould be weed free beforeapplying mulches. Organicmulches can break downover time and enrich thesoil. Examples of organicmulches include straw,shredded bark and leaves,compost, and pine nee-dles. Inorganic mulchesinclude stones, pot chards,and recycled rubber prod-ucts. These do not breakdown over time nor dothey improve the soil.Some materials can beamendments and mulches,such as compost. It justdepends on how they areused.

Q. How can I arrange myplants to get the best WOWfactor in my garden?

A. For spectacularblooming moments inyour garden consider therule of trio plantings.Three plants make specialcorners and borders toproduce eye-pleasing har-mony. Choose three plantsthat bloom during a partic-ular season; then selectone of each height—tall,medium and short. Plantthe tall plant at the back ofthe border, the mediumone in the middle and theshort one at the front.Things to consider whenchoosing plants and siteplacement are complimen-tary or contrasting colors;leaf texture, water and lightneeds, and soil require-ments.

Q. There is lots of information availableabout growing bird andbutterfly gardens. I amvery concerned about ourdwindling bee population.What can I plant that willattract bees?

A. Every garden needspollinators, and withoutbees there would be limit-ed flowers and even fewervegetables. Bees are basi-cally looking for two thingswhen they visit yourplants: nectar, which is thebee’s main source of ener-gy, and pollen, which pro-vides the balanced diet ofproteins and fats. To helpbees and other pollinatorinsects—like butterflies—you should provide a rangeof plants that will offer asuccession of flowers, andthus pollen and nectar,through the whole growingseason. Native plants areusually best for nativebees, and can be used inboth wild areas and gar-dens. There are also manygarden plants—particularly

Ever notice how many people walkdown the street completely engrossed intheir smartphones and tablets? I fullyexpect to see one of them to walk into alight post one day.

Although it's great having access toemail, social networking and online shop-ping anywhere, anytime, such conven-ience comes with a certain amount of risk,according to Jennifer Fischer, Head ofAmericas Payment System Security, VisaInc. "Unless you're hyper-vigilant aboutusing secure networks and hack-proofpasswords, someone sitting at the nexttable – or halfway around the world –could be watching your every move onlineand stealing valuable personal and finan-cial information right off your device,"says Fischer.

"There are two primary potential dan-gers with Wi-Fi," notes Fischer. "The firstis using an unsecured network – as manypublic hotspots are. With a little know-how and the right tools, cybercriminalscould easily eavesdrop on your onlineactivity.

"The second hazard is phony wirelessnetworks that impersonate legitimate Wi-Fi hot spots. You think you're logged ontoa trusted network, but instead a cyber-criminal has hijacked your session andcan see all the private information youaccess or input."When using public Wi-Fi networks,

always follow these safety precautions:

• Change default settings on your lap-top, smartphone or tablet to require thatyou must manually select a particular Wi-Fi network, rather than automaticallyaccepting the strongest available signal.

• Avoid any network connections yourdevice lists as "unsecured" (look for the"lock" icon). But if you must log on to apublic network, avoid websites thatrequire log-ins and passwords – e.g., bankaccounts or email.

• Ask for the exact name of the estab-lishment's hot spot address – don't befooled by lookalikes.

• Only send personal data via Wi-Fi toencrypted websites (those whose address-es begin with "https" and display a lockicon). To be safe, you may want to avoidconducting financial transactions on pub-lic Wi-Fi altogether; instead, use yoursecure home network.

• Consider using a third-party virtualprivate network (VPN) product to encryptyour Internet traffic.

• Regularly update virus and spywareprotection software, make sure firewallsare on, and load operating system updatesas soon as they become available, whetherfor your computer or smartphone.

• Turn off Wi-Fi on your device when it'snot in use.

• Never leave a computer unattendedwhile signed-in and always sign out com-pletely at the end of a session.

• Keep an eye out for "shoulder surfers"who watch as you type in your password.

Finally, change passwords regularly anduse different ones for each website youvisit. Use a mixture of letters, numbersand symbols and avoid common wordsand phrases. Security experts recommendusing at least 12 characters instead of theminimum eight characters commonlyrequired.

Warbirds scheduled to fly into Tehachapi Airport

Volunteer group Friends of TehachapiAirport, the City of Tehachapi andTehachapi Valley Recreation and ParksDistrict have partnered together to bring aday of fun to Tehachapi Municipal Air-port.

If you have lived in Tehachapi any timeat all, you have occasionally heard or seenone of the wonderful World War II aircraftarriving or departing the airport. Theseaircraft have a distinctive sound and lookthat sets them apart. On Saturday, Sept.28, the Tehachapi community will havethe opportunity to get up close to approx-imately 10 such aircraft. The photos thataccompany this article are examples ofthe type of aircraft that will be on display.

The day begins with a 5K Run on theairport property and a 1-mile Kids FunRun on the Tehachapi runway. You maycontact TVRPD for registration informa-tion about the run.

At 10 a.m., the aircraft will begin arriv-ing. Following the arrival of all aircraftthere will be the opportunity to walkaround, take photos and ask questions of

the pilots for a couple of hours. Several ofthe aircraft will be doing flybys from 1until 2 p.m. Along with the aircraft, therewill be displays of various military vehi-cles and memorabilia from one of thepilots of the Doolittle Raiders. Knights ofColumbus and the Lions Club will be sell-ing food and Tehachapi Valley Recreationand Parks District will have their beer gar-den available.

With any event held, funds are animportant part. Many of the aircraft willbe flying some distance to take part in ourfly-in; it is our desire to provide each air-craft with 100 gallons of fuel as a thankyou. Our goal is to raise $7,500 to coverthe cost of the fuel. We have received gen-erous donations from businesses andindividuals toward this goal and to datewe have received approximately $4,000 inpledges. CERT announces a newclass starting Sept. 16

Recent and current wildland fires inour area, along with the potential forearthquakes, remind us that we live in apotentially dangerous area year round. Tosurvive disasters and recover we mustalways be prepared to react and recovercorrectly.

The FEMA and Kern County FireDepartment sponsored programs of Com-munity Emergency Response Teams(CERT) were established to help answerthe need for immediate emergency helpin disaster affected neighborhoods beforeprofessional first responders’ help canarrive. Our local CERT program has beena recognized part of the Tehachapi Valleysince 2002. The highly experienced CERTinstructors give basic training to citizenvolunteers to help them and their families

first, and then come to help others after adisaster if professional first responder aidis delayed. The 20 hour training courseover eight weeks covers personal andfamily disaster preparedness, fire safety,light search and rescue, and emergencymedical triage, among other items. This istruly a “neighbors helping neighbors”program that you and your family andfriends should take part in.

Interested persons are hereby notified that there is an immediate vacancy on the Tehachapi Valley Healthcare District Citizens’ Bond Oversight Committee (Committee) and two vacancies available in February 2014 due to two current members’ term limits expiring.

The Committee’s purpose is to review the annual expenditure report filed by the Chief Financial Officer of the District to ensure that (a) Bond Proceeds are expended only for the purposes set forth in the Bond Measure; (b) no Bond Proceeds are used for any administrative salaries of the District as set forth in the Bond Measure. The Committee meets monthly and reports to the Board monthly.
