I’m happy to say I rarely have any headaches, I have no more right arm numbness, and Ihave an overall better feeling in my body. I can do more activities, this has truly been a wonderful experience! The Blues comes innumerous shades, andFiddlers Crossing is pre-senting many of them thisyear. Dana Hubbard occu-pies one shade all by him-self. He will be in concertat Fiddlers Crossing April6, at 7 p.m. This will be hisfirst appearance inTehachapi.

Hubbard is a masterof the blues guitar. Using aslide on his little finger, hegets more sounds out ofone guitar and two handsthan seems humanly pos-sible. Hubbard has wonaward after award in theblues genre. He has per-formed with or openedwith some of the greats ofblues, jazz and folk, including, Sam Bush,David Wilcox, Greg All-man, Etta James, DavidLindley and Little Feat.

Hubbard is a nativeCalifornian, born andraised on the CentralCoast. He attended UCSanta Cruz only longenough to finish an elec-tive course on countryblues. Then, he hit theroad and never lookedback. He started the waymany acoustic musiciansstart, by busking on thestreets, in his case Berke-ley and San Francisco.Eventually, he put togeth-

er his own band, The DeltaTwisters, playing bluesclubs for more than adecade. He moved on toan electric guitar for awhile, playing bigger ven-ues and theaters.

He returned to theacoustic guitar with hissecond album and is a vir-tual one-man band on theinstrument. Hubbard’sguitar playing has beencalled “amazing to watchand a joy to listen to.” Youhear the bass and theback beat rhythm alongwith the melody andchords, and look around invain for his backup guitarplayer. He does all thiswhile singing his own

songs, often addressingsocial or environmentalissues with a twinkle inhis eye and a blues man’sgrin.

Fiddlers Crossing is at206 East F Street atRobinson Street, in Down-town Tehachapi. Ticketsmay be purchased nextdoor at Mountain Music,at The Apple Shed, or witha credit card by calling661-823-9994. BY PAUL G. DONOHUE, M.D.CONTRIBUTING WRITER

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Ihave had heartburn formany years. I takePrilosec for it, and itworks fine for me.

My doctor scheduledme for a gastroscopeexam. I haven't had onefor quite a while. Thedoctor who did thescope called me and myfamily doctor to say thatI had changes seen in thebiopsy he took. He says Ihave Barrett's esopha-gus, which can turn intocancer. Naturally, thishas me worried.

Will you elaborate onBarrett's esophagus andwhat I have to look for-ward to? Neither of mydoctors has suggested achange in medicines. Doyou? -- T.M.

ANSWER: Barrett'sesophagus is a change inthe kind of cells that linethe lowermost part of

the esophagus, the partthat attaches to thestomach. That change

bringswith it achance offurther, cancerchanges. The risk isquitesmall,

about 0.5 percent peryear.

Barrett's esophagushappens to people whohave GERD, gastroe-sophageal reflux dis-ease, more popularlycalled heartburn. Youtake a medicine,Prilosec, that suppressesthe production of stom-ach acid. Medicines thatact similarly sometimescan retard the progres-sion of these cellchanges into cancercells. They most definite-ly control heartburn. Bar-rett's also can happen to

people who do not haveGERD.

The chance of cancerdeveloping depends on anumber of criteria. Oneis the kind of cells thathave evolved. If theyshow low-gradechanges, the likelihoodof cancer is not as greatas it would be if theyshow high-gradechanges. The length ofthe area involved withthese changes is anotherfactor in determining thecancer risk.

You must not have hadsigns that raise the riskfor cancer, or the doctorwould have recommend-ed immediate treatment.About the only thing youneed to do is complywith the suggested fol-low-up scope exams sothe doctor can see if anyprocedures are neededto eradicate these newcells. You don't have tosit around and worry.

You have not received adeath sentence.

The booklet on GERD(heartburn) explains thiscommon disorder and itstreatments. Readers canobtain a copy by writing:Dr. Donohue -- No. 501W,Box 536475, Orlando, FL32853-6475. Enclose acheck or money order(no cash) for $4.75U.S./$6 Canada. with therecipient's printed nameand address. Pleaseallow four weeks fordelivery.

DEAR DR. DONOHUE:At a recent cocktailparty, a nurse admon-ished me for chewingice. She said that it indi-cates an iron deficiency.

I get blood work doneevery six months. Mydoctor has never saidanything about an irondeficiency or any otherissue. I am 65 and ingood health. -- C.H.

ANSWER: The nurse

was talking about pica. It's a craving for materi-als not considered foods, like ice, clay, starch anddirt, to mention a few.Sometimes it is an indi-cation of iron deficiency, but far from always.

In someone like you,who has lab tests donetwice a year, you're notanemic and don't havepica.

You do, however, havea habit that will ruin yourteeth if you don't stop.Chewing on ice cancause microscopic frac-tures in tooth enamel, which can become largerfractures.

DEAR DR. DONOHUE:As someone preparingfor a liver biopsy, pleasediscuss the procedure, recovery and possibleside effects. -- R.J.

ANSWER: Doctorsperform a liver biopsywith a needle attachedto a suction device that

can capture a thin pieceof the organ for micro-scopic examination. Theneedle is insertedthrough the skin over theliver. First the doctorcleans the skin with anantiseptic and oftennumbs it. The proceduretakes less than a minute. You return home shortlythereafter.

Side effects are rare.Bleeding is possible. Sois infection. Neither hap-pens frequently.

You don't have to pre-pare yourself in any spe-cial way.

DR. DONOHUE regrets that he isunable to answer individual let-ters, but he will incorporate themin his column whenever possible.Readers may write him or requestan order form of available healthnewsletters at P.O. Box 536475,Orlando, FL 32853-6475.

Q&As from theCalifornia Dept. of Fish and Wildlife

BY CARRIE WILSONCONTRIBUTING WRITER

Question: I have a ques-tion about safely bringing

large hal-ibutonboard.Becausethe Pacifichalibutcaught in

Alaska are often over 100pounds, deckhands usepistols or small shotgunsto kill the fish before bring-ing them on board. This isto prevent the fish fromcausing damage or hurt-ing anyone once on thedeck. Would this methodbe legal to use in Californiaocean waters with largefish? Of course, the fishwould already be "landed"by first being gaffed. Is iteven legal to carry a pistolwhile fishing on a privateboat near shore? (TimothyB., Morro Bay)

Answer: Sport fisher-

men may take halibut byhand, hook and line, spearfishing, spear, harpoon orbow and arrow (CaliforniaCode of Regulations Title14, sections 28.65, 28.90and 28.95.) Firearms arenot a legal method of takefor halibut, so a gun maynot be used to assist intaking or landing the fish.

In some areas it may belegal to carry a pistol on aprivate boat but there areclosures that prohibit thepossession of any firearmon a boat along portions of

the Monterey and San LuisObispo county coastlineswithin the California SeaOtter Game Refuge. If con-sidering carrying a pistolon your boat, you need toresearch local laws andordinances within thejurisdictions you will betransiting on your fishingtrip.

Distance from hoop netsallowed?

Question: How far cana fisherman be from hisnets once the traps are inthe water? 100 yards?500 yards? (Dixon C.)

Answer: There is nolegal limit to the distanceyou can travel from hoopnets you have set in arecreational pursuit of lob-ster or crab. However, theymust be checked - lifted tothe surface - at least everytwo hours.

Transporting a white-tailed doe deer mountinto California

Question: I am lookingto add a mounted white-tail doe head to the familycabin but want to be sure

before buying it. It waslegally taken and mountedin another state. Fromwhat I hear, its really old. Idont believe they arenative to California but Iwant to be sure its legal todo before purchasing andtransporting it here. (KristiD.)

Answer: Yes, it is legalin California for you to pur-chase the taxidermiedhead of either sex of awhite tail deer. CaliforniaFish and Game law (Fishand Game Code, section3039) only prohibits buy-ing or selling any speciesof bird or mammal thatoccurs in the wild in Cali-fornia. We have only muledeer and black tail deerhere.

One thing you must dobefore importing it intoCalifornia is to completeand submit the Declara-tion for Entry form avail-able online at

www.dfg.ca.gov/enforcement/entry-declaration.aspx.

In addition, when ship-ping wildlife into Califor-

nia, there are certainrequirements regardinghow to properly mark con-tainers containing wildlife.Any package in whichbirds, mammals, fish, rep-tiles, or amphibians, orparts thereof, are offeredfor transportation to, orare transported orreceived for transporta-tion by, a common carrieror his or her agent shallbear the name andaddress of the shipper andof the consignee and anaccurate description ofthe numbers and kinds ofbirds, mammals, fish, rep-tiles, or amphibians con-tained therein clearly andconspicuously marked onthe outside thereof. (FGC,section 2348)

Whats required to catchand breed tarantulas?

Question: I'm interest-ed in catching some localtarantulas to try breedingthem. I cant find anythingobviously referring toeither tarantulas or prohi-bitions on such things. Arethere any licenses

required? Are there anydefinite prohibitionsagainst it or any issuespertaining to the differentpublic lands (e.g. city, county, state, federal)? (S.Godfrey)

Answer: The Fish andGame Code and its imple-menting regulations cur-rently do not prohibit thetake of spiders, but federallaws may apply to the takeor breeding of tarantulas. You may want to consultthe U.S. Fish and WildlifeService regarding federalprohibitions, and be awarethat some public lands(e.g. state and nationalparks, scientific reserves, etc.) have laws that pro-hibit the taking of any liveanimals. You need tocheck with the jurisdictionof the land on which youwant to hunt tarantulas. CARRIE WILSON is a marine envi-ronmental scientist with the Cali-fornia Department of Fish andWildlife. Gardening expertMelinda Myersprovides a plan totransform yourlandscape

It’s possible to create abeautiful landscape and bekind to the environmenteven with a busy scheduleand while staying withinbudget. “All it takes is a bitof planning and a few lowmaintenance strategies,”says gardening expert andauthor Melinda Myers.

Myers recommends

these five strategies tocreate a low maintenanceeco-friendly landscape thisseason:• Be Waterwise

Save money on thewater bill, time spentwatering and this preciousresource, water. Start bygrowing drought tolerantplants suited to your grow-ing environment. Onceestablished they will onlyneed watering duringextended dry spells. Mulchwith shredded leaves, evergreen needles, wood-chips, or other organicmatter to conserve mois-

ture, reduce weeds, andimprove the soil as theydecompose.

Fertilize with a low nitro-gen fertilizer, like Milor-ganite, that promotes slowsteady growth instead ofexcessive greenery thatrequires more water.  Plus,it won’t burn even duringdrought.

• Put rainwater towork all season longby using rain barrels tocapture rainwater off yourroof or directly from thesky.

•Recycle Yard Waste inthe Landscape

Minimize the amount ofyard waste produced, reuse what can be in otherareas of the landscapeand recycle the rest ascompost.  These are just afew strategies that willsave time bagging, haul-

ing, and disposing of yarddebris.  And better yet, implementing this strate-gy will save money andtime spent buying andtransporting soil amend-ments, since it will be cre-ated right in the backyard.

Start by leaving grassclippings on the lawn.  Theshort clippings breakdown quickly, addingorganic matter, nutrientsand moisture to the soil.Grow trees suited to thegrowing conditions and

available space.  Thatmeans less pruning andfewer trimmings that willneed to be managed.

•Make Compost at Home

Recycle yard waste intocompost.  Put plant wasteinto a heap and let it rot.Yes, it really is thatsimple.  The more effortput into the process, thequicker the results.

Do not add insect-infested or diseased plantmaterial or perennial

weeds like quack grass, annual weeds gone toseed, or invasiveplants. Most compostpiles are not hot enoughto kill these pests.  And donot add meat, dairy, orbones that can attractrodents.

•Manage Pests in Harmony with Nature

Parents of special needschildren have enough ontheir plates just tending tothe health, educational andemotional needs of theirkids – not to mention oftenhaving to cope with drasti-cally lowered incomebecause of reduced workhours or having to paysomeone else for childcare. So it's not surprising thatmany of these parentshaven't had time to hatch along-term financial plan incase their kids need careafter they're not around.

Fortunately, many gov-ernment programs andcommunity resources areavailable to help relieve thefinancial burden of parent-ing special needs children. But eligibility criteria arecomplicated and the appli-cation process time-con-suming. Plus, if you're notcareful, you or well-mean-ing relatives could inadver-tently disqualify your kidsfor future benefits by notstructuring their inheri-tances correctly.

Here's a brief overviewof key government assis-tance programs:

The Social Security

Administration providestwo types of disability cov-erage: Supplemental Secu-rity Income (SSI) and SocialSecurity Disability Income(SSDI). Rules and eligibilityrequirements differbetween the two programs– and benefits differ forchildren and adults.

In a nutshell, SSI is aneeds-based, cash-assis-tance program for disabledpeople of any age in low-income families with limit-ed resources. Childrenqualify for SSI benefits ifthey meet certain strict cri-teria outlined in SSA Publi-cation 05-11000(www.ssa.gov/pubs/11000.html).

SSDI is a separate pro-gram funded by payrolldeductions (part of FICA).Although children some-times receive SSDI pay-ments if their parents aredisabled, their eligibility isbased on their parents' dis-ability status, not on theirown. However, after turn-ing 22, already disabledchildren may qualify forSSDI on their own if at leastone parent qualifies forSocial Security benefits.

Eligibility rules and defi-nitions for SSI and SSDI are

complex. To see if yourchild qualifies, call SocialSecurity at 1-800-772-1213,or search the Disability andSSI tabs at www.ssa.gov.One particularly helpfulresource is "Benefits forChildren with Disabilities,"SSA Publication No. 05-10026.

Many families inadver-tently jeopardize their dis-abled child's eligibility forgovernment-provided ben-efits by opening accountsin the child's name or des-ignating them as benefici-aries. Unfortunately, feder-al law dictates thatrecipients of SSI, Medicaidand many state assistanceprograms will be disquali-fied if they have resourcesworth over $2,000. So, ifUncle Jerry leaves yourdaughter $10,000 in hiswill, she could lose her ben-efits.

One good alternative isto create a special needstrust, whose assets can beused by its trustee to man-age the finances and per-sonal effects of a disabledperson. Trusts are gov-erned by state laws andshould only be drafted byan attorney familiar withthis area of law.

Some parents name thetrust as beneficiary of lifeinsurance policies toensure a source of fundingif they die before theirchild. (Stay current on yourpremiums.) Other possiblefunding sources includecash, stocks and otherinvestments, retirementplan death benefits, homesale proceeds and inheri-tances from other relativesand friends. Just make surethat the trust –not the child– is named beneficiary.

Preparing a specialneeds trust can be expen-sive – possibly severalthousand dollars, depend-ing on your situation. Butweigh that against theprospect of your child los-ing out on a lifetime of gov-ernment-provided benefitsbecause of an accidentalinheritance – speaking ofwhich, be sure to let anywell-meaning relatives orfriends know about thetrust.JASON ALDERMAN directs Visa'sfinancial education programs. Check plants regularlythroughout the growingseason.  It is easier to con-trol a few insects than thehundreds that can developin a week or two. Andwhen problems arise, lookfor the most eco-friendlycontrol. Start by removingsmall infestations byhand. Consider traps, bar-riers, and natural productsif further control is need-ed.  And as always be sureto read and follow labeldirections carefully.

Use landscape plantingsto keep homes warmer inthe winter and cooler inthe summer.  Homes willhave a more comfortabletemperature throughoutthe seasons and energycosts will be reduced.

Plant trees on the eastand west side of a house toshade windows in thesummer and let the sunshine in and warm it upthrough the south-facingwindows in winter.
