The Rabbi’s Assistant answers questions that someone might be too shy to ask.

What Are All These Dots, Then? Part 2.

Last week we discussed the dagesh kal. To review a bit, a dot in the middle of a Hebrew letter (and we are talking for the

most part Biblical Hebrew for the moment) is called a dagesh (גש ”is one. “Dagesh ”ד“ In fact, the dot inside the .(דmeans “piercing.”

There is another sort of dagesh, a dagesh forte, or dagesh hazak, a “strong” dagesh. This dagesh has the effect of strengthening the sound of the letter, as if it were doubled. (We see this in Italian, for instance, in the word “spaghetti,” in which the “tt” sound both ends the syllable before and begins the syllable after. Linguists call this “gemination.”)

When the dagesh hazak is found inside one of the letters which may take a dagesh kal, the sound which is doubled of

course is the harder sound - as in “כפר” which is “kipper” rather than “kiffer.” (Please note that it is not “kipper” as in “kippered herring,” but has an accented second syllable, sounding like “be FAIR!” )

When a י or ו appears as a consonant, it may contain a dagesh, as in ציון. Guttural letters, however, cannot be doubled,

and thus nearly never take a dagesh hazak .א ה ח ע ר :

Dagesh hazak is commonly a mark of certain grammatical forms, for instance where it is used in the intensive form of a

verb. Occasionally a dagesh is inserted in a consonant to give greater strength to the preceding vowel, as in ה and ,למ

sometimes to ensure the audibility of a vocal schwa, as in עקבות. This latter usage is called a dagesh forte dirimens or a dagesh forte disjunctive.

And then, as if all this were not enough, there is another dot which pierces the bosom of a letter in Hebrew; it looks like a

dagesh, but it is a mappik. Literally meaning “ causing to go out,” a mappik usually appears in a ה but also may (rarely)

appear within an א. One use of the mappik is to create a consonant “h” at the end of a word, complementing the vowel

sound, such as in הללויה, where it is emphasizing God’s name. Another use is when the ending of a word “-ah” indi-cates “her.” Some consider some of the dots that appear in a yad or vav to be mappik as well, as it indicates that they are to be considered consonants in those particular words.

Your correspondent’s Hebrew name, חנה , has a dagesh hazak in the nun, written in English Hannah, with two “n”s.

We look forward to your questions. We have these columns online at http://bethshalompgh.org/ive-always-wondered/ .

Rabbi Adelson joins the Officers and Trustees in welcoming all members and guests to our services. We look forward to seeing you again soon.

All are welcome to the congregational kiddush luncheon, sponsored by Deb & Mark

Sindler, immediately following services in the Samuel and Minnie Hyman Ballroom.

This week’s Se’udah Shelishit will be sponsored in part by Erica Fox Zabusky in memory of her father, Norman Zabusky.

WE NEED YOU!

Are you willing to give some of your time once every other month (possibly less frequently if we get more volunteers) to welcome participants as they enter the synagogue? Beth Shalom’s Membership Committee is working to begin a GREETER PROGRAM to welcome individuals on Shabbat mornings. Volunteers would be asked to welcome people from approximately 9:45 until 11:00 a.m. on a rotating basis. The hope is to have 1-2 individuals each week. If interested, please contact Linda S. Newman at [email protected] or at

336.508.2427. We need YOU to make this program work. Thank you for your participation.

Old Jewish-Organization Pittsburgh-Area Cookbooks

Our friends at the Rauh Jewish Archives at the Heinz History Center are this year collecting old Jewish-organization cookbooks published in western Pennsylvania. To contribute a cookbook to the collection, please contact Eric Lidji at [email protected]. Then bring your

books to Audrey Glickman, Rabbi’s Assistant, with your name and address attached.

We are now a Legacy Partner! Beth Shalom was invited to become a member of the Life and Legacy program this past fall. We feel very fortunate to be a part of this program,

along with more than thirteen Pittsburgh Jewish organizations offered by the Jewish Federation of Pittsburgh and the Harold Grinspoon Foundation. The objective of Life and Legacy is to provide for long-term sustainability for Jewish institutions. This training and incentive program has been

helping us plan for the future of our kehillah.

Our Beth Shalom program will be called the Legacy Circle, and includes these team members: Ira Frank, Mindy Shreve, Julian Elbling, Kate Rothstein, Rabbi Jeremy Markiz, Debby Firestone, and Ken Turkewitz. Our participating goal is to assure the future of Congregation Beth Shalom,

and it is also a very important part of our synagogue’s development /fundraising mission and strategic plan. There are several ways for each of you to help not only our Shul but also other

Jewish institutions that you may have a special connection to. Our team will be visiting members with the hope that you, our membership, will help us achieve the goals set by the program. Please consider leaving a legacy gift to Congregation Beth Shalom which can be achieved in several ways but begins with a “ Declaration of Intent ” through these giving options: Will or Trust, Retirement

Plan Assets (IRA, 401K, Pension), Life Insurance Policy, Cash Donation. And if you’ve already made that choice, please let Rabbi Jeremy Markiz know.

You can make a difference for the future of Pittsburgh’s Jewish Community and Congregation Beth Shalom. If you’d like further information, please contact

any member of our team or Rabbi Jeremy Markiz at the Shul. We appreciate your willingness to be a part of this connection and partnership with Jewish

organizations and Federations from across North America.
