Pope Benedict puts it like this: Vocations to the priesthood and the Consecrated Life are born out of the experience of a personal encounter with Christ'. Such an encounter suggests growth in the experience of faith: our relationship with Jesus strengthens and deepens and we grow into a more and more profound sense of what Jesus is asking gf us in our lives. As in all auth- entic Christian callings, this growth in faith is the fruit of 'deep and constant prayer' in the context of the Christian community. Towards the end of his message Pope Benedict says that the emergence of a vocation to the Priesthood or Consecrated Life is a sign of the maturity of the local Christian community. This raises an interesting question about our local parishes: when did this parish last have a member of the parish ordained as a priest or professed as a Religious? What does this say about the maturity of this Christian community? Priesthood is service; Religious Life i~ witness. Both are vital aspects of a healthy Christian community. Pope Benedict urges young people notto be afraid of service, not to be shy to witness: 'In that way you will be happy to serve, you will be witnesses of a joy that the world cannot give, you will be living flames of an infinite and eternal love, you will learn to "give an account of the hope that is within you" (I Pt 3:1 S). 4th Sunda of Easter. Just a thought NO WINE

Today we are all encouraged to pray for Vocations to the Religious Life and to the Priesthood. I was greatly encouraged by Mother Teresa’s attitude to vocations to her newly established Missionaries of Charity. In the early days of this new Religious Congregation, Mother Teresa used to say ‘I keep on telling Mary, mother of Jesus, “I have no children” just as she told Jesus “They have no wine”. I put my trust in her heart. She is sure to give me in her own way’. We know today how well placed Mother Teresa’s trust was. My suggestion then is that we bombard Mary with prayer for vocations. I am especially grateful that this weekend we are able to introduce two candidates for the Redemptorist way of life: Pierre Lenoir and Sixtus Osuagwu. They are beginning their vocational journey with us and I am sure you will keep them in your prayers. We have become used to the TIME TALENT TREASURE approach to parish involvement. It is significant that it is very difficult to remember when a member of the parish entered Religious Life or was ordained a Priest. Does God ignore Bergvliet in this matter? To respond to a vocational call to Religious Life or Priesthood is to hand over in joy all one’s time, all one’s talent and all one’s treasure –and for keeps! May the Lord’s gentle call be heard in many hearts so that those in greatest need will have the witness of lives radically given to God. We may have very little wine but we have trust in prayer, especially through the intercession of Our Mother of Perpetual help. Fr Sean Wales, C.Ss.R.
